Samsung Galaxy S III dethrones iPhone as world's top seller

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Tx4obama (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: CNN

(CNN) -- For years tech pundits have been searching for an "iPhone" killer -- a mythical new device that would dethrone Apple's mighty handset as the most admired or popular smartphone.

It may be already here.

For the first time, Samsung's Galaxy S III overtook Apple's iPhone 4S to become the world's best-selling smartphone model for the third quarter (July through September) of 2012, according to new research by Strategy Analytics.

The Galaxy S III shipped 18 million units worldwide, compared with 16.2 million for the iPhone 4S. That's 11% of all smartphones shipped on the planet.

Yes, this is the phone in those mocking TV ads that show annoying fanboys and fangirls in a thinly disguised Apple store line, obsessing over their impending purchase while a happy Galaxy S III owner saves a place in line ... for his parents.

1. I own one, and I LOVE IT.

No iPhones can beat Samsung.

Broke one, got mine replaced with insurance fee - sold the broken on on eBay - for the replacement cost + a little cash for myself.

The second one is now Ottered up.

3. Unfortunately, Apple has already copyrighted the phrase "world's top seller"

and now CNN can be expecting a visit from the lawyers.

so you should be expecting a letter from Apple Legal soon.

8. ?

Are you looking for music and wifi (like the ipod)?

There's no reason you can't just buy like a Samsung Galaxy Ace (~ $195). You can (if you have a legacy cell phone) just pop your sim in - no need for expensive data contract etc.

That's pretty much what I do - I sold my ipod for an unlocked phone. Have NO data plan, just a TMobile 'phone' that I pay minutes etc for. Really cheap and I get a great music player, WiFii, and standard 'cell phone' for less than an ipod.

20. And yet Samsung does indeed...

have something like the iPod without the phone part, and they have had it for almost 3 years now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Player

The Galaxy Player is terrific. I own a Galaxy Player 4 running a rooted Gingerbread 2.3.5. With support from numerous sources on the internet, if I desire, I expect to be able to upgrade to ICS 4.0 or JellyBean even.

Even with Gingerbread, it does all I need it to do, and I am not locked into Apple's walled garden style of modern computing.

Check it out.

23. This is a good product-review site

for all things not ipod: http://anythingbutipod.com/

Click on the brand name link to Samsung to see all of their product reviews. They seem to like most of what Samsung has put out.

I don't own any media players by them (just my computer monitor here) but do use another South Korean company's media player, the Cowon S9. I've had it over three years now and still love it!

Oh yeah, it also plays FLAC files without custom firmware

11. At least today one thing that the iPhone has over any Samsung phone is it doesn't have that cheap

plastic feel

Also, IOS is much more standard than Android.

Incidently, I have both the iPhone 5 and Samsung galaxy

and I am not an Apple or Android fan boy

15. You can have any "feel" you want with a case.

If you're going to pay that much for a phone, one might as well spend $20-$30 on a good case to protect it. I like the rubberized feel of this case.

iOS being "standard" isn't a positive thing for me. Sure there's a smaller learning curve, but like most Apple products, that also tends to reduce user choice and functionality. The customizability of Android is greatly appreciate, like 3rd party software keyboards. Especially when emulating Dos or Windows 95/98, it's very helpful. And as seen by Apple's map app move, they want to own every aspect of their product's functionality.
