The identity emerged Sunday of the woman who purportedly received harassing emails from CIA Director David Petraeusí biographer that eventually led to an FBI investigation, then Petraeusí resignation.

A senior military official said the woman is a State Department's liaison to the military's Joint Special Operations Command.

The official identified her as 37-year-old Jill Kelley, in Tampa, Fla., according to the Associated Press.

Another person who knows Kelley and Petraeus confirmed their friendship and said she saw him often.

The first knowledge of the affair outside the FBI came from an FBI whistle-blower who contacted a Capitol Hill Republican who told House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

1. I actually wonder

if the CIA should simply be remade and folded up into the FBI, the way the UK has MI5 (their fbi) and MI6 (Bond, James Bond). For the nation that invetned the camera, telephone, radio and the personal computer, our intellgence gathering skills suck.

12. I'm not sure why you think our nation invented those things.

The radio was invented by Guglielmo Marconi, an Italian.

The camera was developed by a number of people, the most notable of whom was Louis Daguerre, a Frenchman.

The telephone was developed by a number of people, including Alexander Graham Bell, a Scottish-born Canadian, Innocenzo Manzetti, an Italian, and Antonio Meucci, an Italian-born American.

13. The problem with that is the FBI isn't a spy agency.

The FBI is a law enforcement agency, the CIA is not. No way and no how should the CIA ever be given that much power, they already have WAY to much as it is.

2. If the BBC had to fire its news head, the US can fire its CIA director

Its a sign of the times. I still think we can't lose our heads over individuals indiscretions.

4. The story is not really about the indiscretions.

It is about who knew what, and when. It is about the actual proper functioning of the government. Right now it appears to be getting an F.

3. Well, looks like I was mostly correct in my intial theory about what happened w/ Petraeus...

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=298826

I suspected that the security compromise was reported by Missus Petraeus or a CiA foe....I was close...its a love triangle....seems the General has likely had more than one affair and its a case of the green eyed monster getting involved. Looks like Mrs Broadwell was obsessed.....

Wow...this is going to get interesting because Americans love sex scandals....

6. I was thinking it was an entirely personal situation too

I think since Cantor kept it quiet is a good clue too. If it would have hurt Obama, he would have squealed.

8. If a Democratic congressman had learned of a potential breach of national security

and sat on it, the republicons would be screaming treason.

14. Who Knew What And When

A lot of people were kept in the dark on this that should not have been and that is a story in itself. Why did the Republican Congressman go to Eric Cantor with this information rather than following proper channels? When Cantor went to the FBI why did Bush appointee Mueller set on it rather than calling it to the attention of the Obama administration and the Intelligence committees within Congress. The conduct of both Cantor and Mueller needs to be investigated thoroughly. It seems that Petraeus was involved in this love triangle at the time of his appointment as Director of CIA and that reflects really poorly on Gen. Petraeus. Was he not properly vetted because of who he was? It looks to me like a lot of people will end up having egg on their face.

16. Interesting - I have not liked him since Iraq and was disappointed obama kept so my bush appointees

so I am glad he is gone but wish he had been gone before we went into IRAQ under false pretenses - not we will have to see how it all unfolds - forces obama to look for someone else

17. All my RW friends are screaming outrage

because they think Obama is using it as a distraction to the "Bengazigate" investigation. It's pointless to try to argue with them since don't believe in facts. So I just tell them that they are right, and there's nothing they will be able to do about once they get rounded up and sent to the FEMA concentration camps.
