Disney to Buy Lucasfilm in Deal Worth Over $4 Billion

Last edited Tue Oct 30, 2012, 04:40 PM USA/ET - Edit history (5)

Source: CNBC

Walt Disney announced Tuesday that it has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm, the film company founded by Star Wars creator George Lucas, in a cash-and-stock deal worth $4.05 billion.

The deal is a rough equivalent to what the conglomerate paid for Marvel Entertainment back in 2009. Disney will pay half of the deal in cash and will issue 40 million shares at closing.

Lucasfilm was founded and is owned by George Lucas, producer of Star Wars and Indiana Jones films. In a statement, Lucas said, 'It's now time for me to pass 'Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers.'

Maybe Lucasfilm will make a decent new Star Wars Trilogy to make up for Episodes 1, 2, and 3.

You know its coming. He said decades ago, that there would be 9 Episodes.

Lucas lost his artistry many, many years ago. He's so focused on cash, he sold his own name.

Confirmed: STAR WARS: EPISODE 7 feature film targeted for release in 2015.

33. Disney is zip without acquiring new avenues of creativity

Left to develop their own property on their own, they will die on the vine; a slow agonizing death.

5. Not True

I know that DU is full of anti Disney people but my children have grown up watching many of the Disney movies and it has given them great joy. One of my favorite movies is 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. Yes Disney is corporate and owns ABC but let me tell you this they have done nothing but make my children happy whether it is at the parks or one of the many vacation resorts that they have. They also went out of their way a few years ago to make sure that gays and lesbians were welcome in thier parks.

I think the animus towards Disney is not so much their product line, but that they, combined with General Electric and Westinghouse own over 85% of all U.S. print and electronic media publishing/distribution outlets, reducing overall consumer choice.

14. Pixar is also in the Bay Area

in Emeryville, just across the Bay Bridge from SF, where Lucasfilm is based in the Presidio.

So Disney now owns our entire film industry, as well as ABC Channel 7.

I actually like the first trilogy. sorry.

My son saw them in chronological order and he enjoys them as do I.

We also enjoy the clone wars on Cartoon network.

It is fucking fantasy for crying out loud.

40. "Return of the Jedi" is the weakest of the original trilogy

It's too bloated and doesn't introduce anything new, as all its major setpieces were done before and better.

Battle of Yavin > Battle of Endor

"Empire" duel > "Return" duel

Ewok fight = Ridiculous

31. Yet another example of stale Hollywood "ideas". Watch TV instead, people!

On TV, you may actually see real characters and lots of diversity.

In the movies, all you see nowadays are the wet dreams of man-child producers and directors.
