Jimmy Carter Claims Israel Creating ‘Catastrophic’ Situation With Palestinians

Source: Associated Press

JERUSALEM (AP) — Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said Monday during a visit to Jerusalem that the prospect of an Israel-Palestinian peace accord is “vanishing,” blaming Israeli settlement of the West Bank.

Carter, a longtime critic of Israeli policies, called the current situation “catastrophic” and blamed Israel for the growing isolation of east Jerusalem from the West Bank. He said a Palestinian state has become “unviable.”

“We’ve reached a crisis stage,” said Carter, 88. “The two-state solution is the only realistic path to peace and security for Israel and the Palestinians.”

Carter is currently on a two-day visit leading a delegation known as the “The Elders,” which includes the former prime minister of Norway and the former president of Ireland. The group met with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

the situation in Gaza is bad, very bad but it is neither Gitmo or a concentration camp, such exaggeration only feeds those that are pro status quo, please keep it real

and both with amazingly high turnouts. More so than the last election. I wouldn't worry about it.

And Jimmy Carter is not an anti-semite.

5. He's correct...

There's a mental-illness regarding Israel's policies towards the Palestinians. It's that Israel can do no wrong.

What they have done to the Palestinians will go down in history as a great tragedy.

29. ^True ^

How Israel has treated Palestinians and seized their land (now a fait accompli) always reminded me of how Europeans successfully seized the land from Native Americans while demonizing those who fought back as terrorists.

7. I like Jimmy Carter, but why this, why now? WTF?

Before anyone crawls all over me, read the archives here of my long support for President Carter since 2001 at the DU.

That said, this is monstrously stupid for him to say this on the day President Obama stands on stage against Mitt Romney two weeks before the election.

Sorry President Carter, your "statement' could have waited.

This will hurt President Obama and I don't like that. At all.

9. Is it wrong for Dems to remain consistent on the human rights of minorities, no matter who they are?

Oh and see my reply to post #3. This doesn't hurt Dems, it helps them.

Edit - The way the AP framed the headline however, is inflammatory but that's not Carter's fault.

16. He's currently in Jerusalem.

Doesn't it make sense that he would be asked about his impressions?

So he should keep his opinions to himself? That's not our Jimmy.

I doubt whether a statement like this will hurt President Obama, and most certainly not with anyone who has a functioning brain. Those who don't will always be a problem.

23. Another indication that something is up? i.e. an attack on Iran???

Remember all ex-presidents are entitled to continued to get CIA reports. From what I have read, only Bush the Elder continued to listen to them after he left office (this was read while Bush Jr was President so it is unknown if Bush jr is doing as his daddy had been doing). On the other hand, since all ex-Presidents can still get those reports, it is also possible for people in the CIA to contact them to give them reports (what they can ask for, can also be sent to them). Now Carter can NOT reveal what he has been told, nor say anything that reflects what he has been told AND is still classified, but he can make general statements like the one he has. Thus just one more point that indicate that at least Carter suspects something is up in the Middle East.

Carter may have used this trip to Israel to try to point out the problems with a military solution to the Middle East, this may be based on reports sent to him, or may just be based on the fact he is in Israel at the present time. i.e No secret CIA report, but just an observation based in him being in Israel along with the Former President of Ireland and Prime Minster of Norway. Sorry, waiting till he return home would have less effect not only in the US but also in Israel, the rest of the Middle East and Europe.

Yes it is bad timing for the US Presidential elections, but if he waited it would have less effect for it would be his observation alone, not one shared by two other former heads of States.

25. I hear you, but there will be no unilateral attack by Israel against Iran before the election.

That said, the chest thumping and warmongering talk by Ryan and Romney equally has not been helpful. Why? Because all the bellicose talk was just empty political rhetoric aimed at a domestic audience for politics and had nothing to do with solving the problem.

Last night, the world saw Mitt Romney walk away from over a year of his bullshit and then endorse all of the hard work done by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, her State Department, and of course the leadership of this President, Barack Obama.

How about a groom telling his bride to be that he's been banging her sister?

Timing is EVERYTHING, I think the Sunday news/entertainment programming the day BEFORE the debates would have been most effective.

But Israel worship is DeRigeuer for any modern candidate, especially for POTUS.

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their rhetoric, promises, or excuses.

Make a Palestinian state non-viable by stealing the West Bank via illegal settlements. Once again, Jimmy Carter says what no one else dares to put out there - the truth.

27. Taking all of Palestine has been the goal of the right all along.

They tried to take it all at Israel's inception. The Palestinians' Arab neighbors prevented a complete route. In 1967 Israel fabricated an excuse to start a war and stole parts of Jordan, Egypt, and Syria to create a Greater Israel.

They can't get away with a rapid ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians this time, so they are using the "settlement" project to expropriate the land.

It's been one state for a very long time. It isn't a Jewish state since a very large percentage of the citizens are not Jewish. They are just denied their rights by members of the most powerful religion.

Members of our media that call Israel a "Jewish State" are supporting Israel's racism.

2 weeks before such an important election and now he has to open his mouth? I know this board is a big fan of Pres Carter but this just proves how tone deaf he is and why nobody important pays any attention to him.

30. Carter doesn't OWE anything to 'this president' or any other.

Anybody who's seen those rare photos of 'still living presidents' when they've gathered can see Jimmy Carter isn't part of the club. Bush 41 and Bill Clinton are pals.

Carter is a christian and a humanist more than a politician. For that I admire him.

What is it with people shoving words into everyone's mouth? I stated a FACT - Pres Carter hasn't done anything to help Pres Obama. Period. End of sentence. Is there any reason he couldn't have brought this up in 2 weeks, when it wouldn't get in the way of what the Democratic party is trying to do?

35. behind the controversial headline, his statements were absolute nonsense

from this article:
“Up until now, every prime minister has been a willing and enthusiastic supporter of the two-state solution,” he said.

the NYT (ugh) has a longer quote:
“The United States used to be major obstacle to Israeli expansion...“I’ve known every prime minister since Golda Meir,” he said, ticking off experiences with Menachem Begin, Ariel Sharon, Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak. “All the previous prime ministers have been so courageous in their own way. In the past, all committed to the two states."

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/23/world/middleeast/in-israel-carter-says-two-state-solution-in-death-throes.html?ref=middleeast&pagewanted=print

This is just obscene comedy and its the usual stuff from him--Carter deserves neither the praise he gets for allegedly being "pro-Palestinian", nor the venom received from American & Israeli zionists.
