Obama calls on Congress to act on tax cut, housing

Source: Salon/AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says a new report showing that the unemployment rate has dropped below 8 percent is a sign the still-sluggish economy is moving forward. But Obama says more needs to be done.

He called on Republicans in Congress to work with Democrats on a plan to cut taxes for 98 percent of Americans and on another bill to help families refinance their homes at lower interest rates. Obama also said Congress should approve his plan for a veterans jobs corps to help former members of the military find work as police officers, firefighters and park rangers.

Obama is blaming congressional Republicans for not passing the legislation.

In his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama said Republicans in Congress “need to stop trying to refight the battles of the past few years and finally start doing something to actually help the middle class get ahead.”

2. Well, that will show just how political they are. Not a good move...they are already scraping

the bottom of opinion polls. Maybe Obama should propose a ton of bills that affect citizens' everyday lives to show how selfish the Repugs are when it comes to helping the population. They'll turn down everything until November 7th...and probably even after.

3. Hope I'm Not Off Topic Here

But I have been thinking for some time...what if the political roles were reversed? Would the Democrats act as badly as the Republicans have the past four years, with their fillibusters and general obstruction? I have asked a couple of friends of mine (both women) about that. Both said, "nooooo, Democrats would never do that."

What do you think - are the Dems morally superior or would it be tit-for-tat?

4. That is a question that I have been thinking about also

I think the Democrats would look out for the Country and not take the chance of destroying it like the Republicans have. The Republicans speak for the highest bidder, this needs to stop before they destroy this Country.

7. Look around. Do you have anything left?

Because if you do, it's thanks to Democratic filibustering in the Senate from 2003-2008.

Had Harry Reid not read entire books into the Congressional Record during that time, George W. Bush's plan to use his "political capital" would have succeeded. Your Social Security would have been dumped into the housing market just before it tanked. Your savings would have been spent on gasoline and a war in Iran. Our forests would have been cut down, own mountaintops removed, your home (if you still had one) structurally weakened by earthquakes, your groundwater would be poisoned, and as the deleterious health effects of such behavior began to manifest itself, your insurance company would have dropped you and left you to die.

That's what would have happened when roles were reversed. But during that time, Democrats never obstructed and delayed in order to deliberately make life worse for Americans, as Republicans have for the past three and a half years. They never raised your taxes, as Republicans did just two months ago. They never wrecked the nation's credit rating.

So hell yes, Democrats have already demonstrated that in a tit for tat situation they are morally superior. Anything you have left is proof of that.

8. There is historical evidence...........

for bi-partisanship effort from the Democrats. Even with a highly partisan President ( Dick Cheney ). I mean Bush. The Pugs were in control of Congress for most of that fiasco and then there was Ray Gun and Bush 1.

14. Thanks, Jurors

Never meant to cause a furor. I am most definitely not a "troll." What I am is a forever-liberal 70-year old grandma hunched over my computer with a few thoughts. I apologize to anyone who thought it was hurtful. Frankly, I am the one feeling hurt.

15. Oh I suspect you have more than a few thoughts to share

I'm sorry that someone reacted like that, there was no reason for it and certainly no indication that you were in any way a troll. It was an honest and thought provoking question that you asked.

As for my answer... I think that, in general, democrats are morally superior - at least as it pertains to my own principles and view of morality. A social safety net, environmental protections, health care for everyone.. well, those seem like good things to me. Certainly democrats trade tit for tat in many instances, but overall, I find that the values, the goals of the party are in the right place.

Would the democrats act as badly as the republicans? It depends on what the republicans were trying to accomplish. The privatization of social security - eliminating funds from education, welfare, food stamps, heating and rental assistance and such things... well, in those instances, the democrats had damn well better act as badly as the republicans, if they want me to vote for them. In several instances, the democrats have proven to me that they share my basic beliefs in human compassion, generosity and progress.

We can all be childish at times, democrats as much as republicans... but what it ultimately comes down to, for me, is the basic belief that everyone deserves a chance.

5. Great ideas - vets job corps - like it.

Help folks to refinance - another goodie.

Expecting congress to act? That would make them look weak. It's a red world, nothing American about it.

While I'm at it - am I the only one who thinks breaking up with these asswipes would benefit us AND the world?
Russia broke up, China will, they're full of domestic division right now. They can have their blessedly bloated military, bibles, low IQs', Rush Beck & Hannity, etc. We'll take the universities, co-ops, and the middle class. The details get pretty mind-boggling, but sometimes it seems like it would
streamline things. Hell, they'd be happier, too. Imagine a bible in every classroom? Geez, just makes ya wanna bust up with joy... Maybe things would just work a little more smoothly in the long run. Nothing to fight about, just a 'well, time to part on the path' thing. They can have their oil, coal, and gas, we'll move on to wind, solar, geothermal. The states wouldn't have to be physically contiguous, just theoretically.

Peaceful, of course, being the key. I've thought about this, I think divvying up the $ is where people just walk away from it. Alot of fallouts, actually. Maybe too many. I tell ya one thing, it really makes you think hard about who is paying for what. Two clean slates, and then what? It makes ya think.

I'm all for working things out, but, hey, I just don't see it anymore. It's like we've become the stupids and the working on its. And stupid has become terminally infatuated with itself. Imagine that handful of rich pricks realizing their population is nothing but johnny redneck and betty bible thump? uh oh.

Anybody? Am I gonna kicked off for this? Hope not.

16. Why would you get kicked off for this?

I'm inclined to agree with you - breaking up with these asswipes would benefit us and the whole world. The issue is finding a humane way in which to do so... which, if you can solve that one, hey, run for President and I'll campaign for you.

I don't think it's ever going to happen, but would it benefit humanity? Yep. I think it would.
