Philippines arrests Gloria Arroyo on plunder charges

Former Philippine President Gloria Arroyo has been arrested in hospital on plunder charges for allegedly misusing state funds while in office.

A court had issued an arrest warrant for Mrs Arroyo, who is accused of diverting $8.8m (5.5m) from the state lottery charity fund for personal gain.

Police served the warrant while she was at an army hospital, officials say

She was detained earlier this year on a separate election fraud charge but released on bail in July.

1. If true, this is really sad

She was so brave standing for election against Marcos - and it seemed such a victory for real democracy that she won. I have to admit that after the election, I don't recall reading anything on her administration.

4. She became president when...

...Estrada was run out of office. She didn't run against Marcos. She was in office for nine years - of questionable legality - and involved in scandal after scandal. Something like 1000 people died or disappeared under questionable circumstances during her terms. Where have you been?

5. I confused her with Corazon Aquino

Obviously - as I implied before - I haven't followed it.

6. Corruption in the Philippines is a major problem

I have a few friends from there and have been there a few times. The people are very nice, but most are poor. Until they deal with the corruption problem, it won't get better.

7. If she's lucky she might get a prison visit from her US American friend:

She was very well received when Bush #43 was the pResident.
