White House is widening covert operations in North Africa

Source: ADN

WASHINGTON -- Small teams of special operations forces arrived at American embassies throughout North Africa in the months before militants launched the fiery attack that killed the U.S. ambassador in Libya. The soldiers' mission: Set up a network that could quickly strike a terrorist target or rescue a hostage.

The White House signed off a year ago on the plan to build the new military counterterror task force in the region, and the advance teams have been there for six months, according to three U.S. counterterror officials and a former intelligence official. All spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the strategy publicly.

The effort indicates that the administration has been worried for some time about a growing threat posed by al-Qaida and its offshoots in North Africa. But officials say the military organization was too new to respond to the attack in Benghazi, where the administration now believes armed al-Qaida-linked militants surrounded the lightly guarded U.S. compound, set it on fire and killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Republicans have questioned whether the Obama administration has been hiding key information or hasn't known what happened in the immediate aftermath of the attack. They are using those questions in the final weeks before the U.S. elections as an opportunity to assail President Barack Obama on foreign policy, an area where he has held clear leads in opinion polls since the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011.

Looks like the US is building more secret bases in Libya.

2. That didn't take them long to start a new front.

Begs the question though.

Is the US using it's Emabassies as a center for military operations, and if it is, is that legal?

4. Well...

An embassy is considered sovereign territory. Typically of course it is assumed you can protect it with security, marines, etc. Although you normally need to ask the host country for permission to bring the weapons through, although the host country almost always says yes.

What is going on here is probably legal, however any time you start acting outside of the norm(s) of diplomatic behavior you risk backlash. Most notably, would you want to be a foreign service officer in a country where terrorists assume you are a special forces op?

6. It would appear they are going from soveriegn territory embassy to military base.

I would think that would be counter intuitive of the premise of an Embassy.

That would the make Ambassador a military target and not a diplomatic one.

8. Why do you think that? It is perfectly normal to have intelligence and other such

folks working in embassies.

11. One thing to have intelligence officers at an embassy

Totally different scenario to be planning military operations from one.

It is no longer a diplomatic mission and has evolved to a military target.

12. Libya is still a war zone. We cannot forget that.

The fact that our ambassador was killed in a diplomatic consulate is proof that we need security forces and excellent intelligence in Libya.

It would be careless, negligent not to have it. Obama is doing just what should be done in this situation.

13. War zone? By what standard?

Like I said, if they are planning military operations from a diplomatic compound it loses that designation and becomes a military target. It is that simple.

It would appear the Ambassador was, what is the term we love to use, collateral damage.

7. Militant terrorists attacked a US consulate while the ambassador, a much loved ambassador,

was there. This is normal self-defense.

The stuff Assange disclosed was not top secret national security.

This information is. Making it public puts American lives in danger. I'm shocked that it is being made public. I wonder who is talking about it.

I note that Republicans are claiming that the Obama administration was vague about what happened in Benghazi, whether it was really terrorists or just a mob.

In fact, Hillary Clinton made a statement on September 12 the day after the attack stating it was a group of armed militants.

I suspect this is part of a campaign by Rove and friends to attack Obama's strategy against terrorism. If so, it is really low and suggests they do not have the interests of our country at heart.

3. Another thought.

Maybe those weren't the Ambassador's "bodyguards" but mercenaries or special forces he was meeting with.

Brings up some interesting questions.

5. Thats what I thought, as soon as the story broke

Especially when the early reports said that all of those who were killed were "ambassadors". I began to wonder how many of the "ambassadors" held subscriptions to "Soldier Of Fortune Magazine".

9. It was never reported that all of them were ambassadors - just that one was.

It was also known what he was going to - and it included visiting the new hospital - where he was taken and died.

Ah, but now that you have spoken, I am sure that my faculties must have deceived me. And I am further certain that you have read every version of the story that was reported in every news outlet. So please forgive my sorry pathetic ass which pales in the light of someone who knows more than they do.

Mea culpa.

Edit for syntax
