Report: Drones headed to Libya
Source: Politico
By DONOVAN SLACK | 9/12/12 12:48 PM EDT A senior U.S. official tells CNN that U.S. unmanned surveillance drones are expected to begin flying over Benghazai and other locations in eastern Libya to look for jihadi encampments and targets that may be tied to the attack on U.S. State Department personnel. The proposal for use of drones is expected to be approved shortly by the Pentagon and the White House, CNN's Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr reported. The official said the plan is for U.S. surveillance drones to gather the intelligence and then hand it off to the Libyans to strike the targets. POLITICO has not independently confirmed this report. CNN is also reporting that the attacks were planned in advance, and "the attackers used the protest outside the consulate as a diversion, U.S. sources told CNN Wednesday. "The sources could not say whether the attackers instigated the protest or merely took advantage of it. The sources do not believe Ambassador Chris Stevens was specifically targeted." 7. Not necessarily
|
All you have to do is say you are sending drones and ramping up in other areas and it has the effect of causing some pause in the minds of those who may have committed this deed or those planning further adventures.

16. RPGs are ballistic and unguided
|
Objects that are smaller, further or moving are more difficult to hit.
Drones often operate in groups. Shoot at one and you give away your position. Shoot with an RPG and you leave a heat signature visible from an NRO satellite. |

12. perhaps they already have the drones there
|
and this kind of release will inspire groups to quickly up and move - calling attention to themselves in the process (thinking that they are doing it ahead of being observed) |

8. Winning hearts and minds another drone at a time
|
I'm pretty certain that the Libyan people will appreciate them just as much as the drones are appreciated in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, the Philippines, Australia, etc.
Heck, I bet that so many US folk would love it just as much if a foreign military sent some military drones into our territory! |

17. I can see where you are coming from..

However our embassy was breached and the ambassador killed. This is something very serious. If a foreign consulate here were under threat, we would have armed forces protecting it as it is sovereign territory of another nation. Libya did not do this, either by lack of will or lack of intelligence of what is going on in their own country.
We could close the embassy, which would in effect sever diplomatic ties to that country. We could do what we have to in order to protect our people in the embassy until things can be worked out with the host country. I would prefer the latter as it keeps doors open to dialog in the future. Use of military might is an unsavory thing at best, but unfortunately at times it is needed. My hope is that we do not have to bring action against Libya since the enemy has a tendency to hide among the innocent. |

15. With apologies to Stephen Sondheim: "Send in the Drones"
|
to the tune of
Isn't it great? Swiftly they die? Targets destroyed on the ground. Bombed from the sky. Send in the drones. It’s the best way? Don't you approve? Villains keep tearing around, Weapons that move. But now we use drones. Send in the drones. Just when they thought They might be free, Finally stopping Somewhere with a hope of safety, But here comes a drone With its usual boom, None left alive, Their camp now their tomb. Don't you hate war? Their fault, I know. We thought that they wanted us there; Now we must go. But still we use drones. Thank God for the drones. Quick, send in the drones. What a surprise. Who could foresee They might acquire the Technology? Why only now that I see Some are heading this way - What a surprise, What a bad day. Isn't it sick? It’s all so black. Death raining down everywhere From their attack. And where are the drones? Quick, send off the drones. Don't bother - they're back. http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/stephensondheim3.shtml |
