Obama campaign mobilizing thousands of lawyers to combat voter ID laws, voting restrictions
Source: Cronkite News Service
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- President Barack Obama's reelection campaign and the Democratic National Committee are coordinating and deploying thousands of lawyers to help voters deal with an array of recent voting law changes, according to national and state campaign officials. Democrats and voting rights group say laws enacted across the country, from voter ID requirements to restrictions on third-party registration groups to shortened early-voting windows, are enacted largely by Republican legislatures and governors in a systematic effort to disenfranchise likely Democratic voters. Republicans across the country have said the changes are about preventing election fraud. "The entire Republican program built around this anti-fraud theme had many component parts," said Robert Bauer, the lead lawyer for both the Democratic National Convention and Organizing for America, Obama's reelection campaign. "All of them organized around a central objective of disenfranchisement." Bauer made the comments Thursday during a Voting Rights Institute meeting at the Democratic National Convention. The Voting Rights Institute, created by the DNC after the 2000 election, also held a voter-suppression panel that blasted voting law changes in Florida, Ohio and other states. Bauer said the changes to the laws could make local election officials, many of whom he said were trying to do the right thing, make mistakes that disenfranchise voters. "Votes lost," Bauer said. "Votes cast not counted. Voters turned away at the polls." 5. Sure, the Obama administration doesn't really care about this issue.
|
So they ignored it. And now they are "late".
Because that helps them how, exactly? |

7. No, you are wrong, and apparently not paying attention...they did this in 2008 too
|
as election day approaches, what they are doing is preparing to have lawyers on the ground to meet and help voters. you don't do that in *March*!
this is what they did in 2008. i volunteered in Nevada and saw it first hand, they had lawyers and law students at precincts all over the place and they were there to help assure that people could vote --in fact, they were there to assure that any eligible voter could vote, regardless of whom they were supporting. their organization was so thorough and so coordinated, i've never seen anything like it and for you to ignorantly run them down like they are not paying attention is unfair. |

They've been around.

2. The same sort of announcement
|
The same sort of announcement went out about sending thousands of lawyers to prevent election fraud in 2004. Not a peep was heard from them again as the Dems rolled over afterward. I'll believe this when I see it. So far the Dems seem to be for the most part unaware of the dangers of hackable proprietary electronic voting systems.

What's your point ... the Dems are hoping to LOSE?

9. your ignorance of an effort doesn't mean it did not happen
|
I witnessed it in Reno/Sparks in 2008, it was thorough, there were a ton of lawyers and law students and they covered precincts all over the place, in fact, they sometimes had more than one attorney per voting location.
They were all over this. |

11. Completely agree with you about the hackable (and rabid republican-owned) electronic voting equitpmt
|
I keep waiting to hear something about that!! Such BS since the Kerry campaign and so easy to disenfranchise voters that way, as has been amply reported/analyzed... IMO voting equipmt should be federally managed, not privately and secretively run.

25. Thanks, Juajen, I meant amply, though it surely hasn't gotten enough MSM reporting,
|
but the facts/questionable activities and results have been reported from all corners. So correction?: not so much, but your implicit point about the MSM itself not reporting is a good one! And you are an old Duer... I'll welcome your comments any time -

21. In Reno/Sparks in 2008, the campaign had lawyers and law students almost everywhere
|
all our key precincts. i was counting voters at 3 precincts (one location though) and Obama campaign had 3 law students, one for each precinct. some would observe, others would be available on the outside for questions.
the campaign in 2008 was so thorough, so planned, so coordinated, they didn't miss a beat. the Obama campaign then, overdid and overdid everything, just to be sure. they really didn't mess around. it worked so well that i was sent home early, as were the attorneys, because all our targeted voters had voted well before the polls closed. Nevada went from a losing by 2.5% margin to winning by 12%. |

it's to make sure eligible voters are able/allowed to cast their ballots.
if you're going to comment on an article, you could at least read it first. |

Last edited Sat Sep 8, 2012, 09:54 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) What if those who do not have the proper ID to vote are bused by the thousands to the polls and demand their right to vote? Perhaps it is not feasible, but if it was it seems that it would call attention to dishonest disenfranchisement of millions of voters. It could be a real Tea Party event in which the denial of citizens rights would be opening demonstrated to be nothing more than voter suppression. This could be especially effective if it involved veterans who served during war time and because of their age may not qualify or even have the need for a drivers license or what ever ID they are demanding.

Will be interesting to see if they pull a Schrub '04, with broken machines and no parking, endless lines, etc.
I somehow think Shrub needed his daddy's cronies to pull it off. Election fraud has since sent dozens to jail. It's a big risk. Will there be fools loyal enough to romney with the local backing to pull it off, in this age of cell phones, tweeting, and portable broadcasting? |
