"That is how, folks, you talk to a do-nothing Tea Party Congressman."
So... I'm working the Stephenson County Democrats booth at the County Fair, right?
We're getting ready to call it a day when Republican Rep. Bobby Schilling walks up with an entourage of fascist Tea Baggers looking for a photo op shaking the hand of a local democrat. I take the Congressman's hand and tell him, "We've met before, Congressman." "You do look familiar," he tells me. "Yeah," I tell him. "I debated Paul Ryan's bullshit budget you supported with the Tea Party's John Arn at the Rockford Public Library." "I remember!" says the Congressman. "We're just doing what's best for America!" "Getting rid of two tax brackets," I tell him - my voice getting a little louder, "and consolidating the rest so that middle class Americans get a tax hike isn't in my interests as an American, Congressman." "We're going to have to agree to disagree," the guy says. "Don't you think that we're both trying to do what's best for the country?" "Well, no, Congressman," I say to him. "I think some people have their own interests at heart, instead of the country's." It's at this point that my voice is DEFINITELY above what could be considered a calm or level tone. "Right down the street, here (in Freeport, Illinois), you have the Sensata company getting ready to lay off all of it's workers and ship operations overseas. Your response was to write a letter and "beg" the CEO of Sensata to reconsider the move. You are a Congressman, sir! Do you represent all those Freeport residents who are going to be soon out of a job, or do you represent the company?" Instead of even trying to formulate any sort of reasonable response the man tries to say something about the President - but I interrupt the Congressman at that point and remind him that we're not talking about the fellow living in the White House, but just what it is he is going to do as our local Representative about a local factory closing shop shipping everything over to Communist China. The guy knows he's not going to get any good press out of this exchange, being just a tad-bit brighter than all of his Tea Party supporters, smiles, and beats a hasty retreat without saying another word. As he walks away I give it one more shot: "Do your job Congressman: Represent your constituients." All the folks at the other County Fair booths around us just stand and look at me, like, 'What just happened? What did we just see?' "That is how, folks, " I say as I return to breaking down the booth, "you talk to a do-nothing Tea Party Congressman."

And - to be blunt - I wanted to give Schilling a piece of my mind, rather than use Mitten's history as a CEO as a club. That's an attack against Mitt - not this other loser.
If the conversation had gone on longer, it would have come up... but, as it is.... I did get to lay some of this garbage on Schilling's shoulders and that was the goal. |

Last edited Sun Jul 15, 2012, 04:04 AM USA/ET - Edit history (3) I think we need to be a little mad.
Here is my episode today: Washington State Representative, Larry Haler (R), knocked on my door today and handed me a pamphlet and asked for my vote. I was going to just take it and let him go. The pamphlet was headed for the trash as soon as the door shut. But......he handed me another pamphlet and asked for my support for Gubernatorial candidate, Rob Mckenna. He added that they were both going to fight against "Obama care". I asked him if Rob Mckenna belonged to the Tea Party. "No" he replied. I mused over the response for a bit but didn't press it. In my mind, all those "moderate" GOPers always walk in lock step with the fringe crazies anyway. An interesting answer and one that should be asked of all GOP candidates. There are some that not only say no, but say it sheepishly as if they are embarrassed of the implied association. I told him that I am diametrically opposed to his politics. I support the Affordable Health Care Act. I added, "There are two big fears out there. Fear of big government and fear of big money. My biggest fear is of the banks and corporations. I can democratically elect the leadership of government. I have no influence over the leaders of banks and corporations except through government. Deregulation, subsidizing, reducing government oversight by taking the wrecking ball to government. These are the last things i want to do." My voice gradually raised as I spoke. He smiled and walked off. He knew he wasn't going to get my vote. |

which he will comfortably ignore. In this age of the Super PACs, truth tends to be rather a mere nuisance to the elite. While I respect your effort and your nerve in confronting the man, he will cry all the way to the bank.
Bad press, good press...does it really matter? The MSM is controlled by such people as Mitt Romney, Rupert Murdoch, David Koch. It's the golden rule... you know, who ever has the most gold makes all the rules. They also make most of the information, starting from whole cloth and tearing strips apart to spin it in whatever a way is most comfortable, most profitable and unlikely to be a risk. Truth is always risky - had we a congress full of folks like you instead of these nit wit tea party imbeciles... well, I might just be optimistic. Had we a media of Journalists unafraid of telling the truth, determined to reveal facts instead of serving the almighty profit or the corporate types that own them.... well, I might be optimistic. If I suspected, even for a moment, that it was possible to reach these tea party types with facts, with any real notion of truth, justice, charity... well, I might be optimistic. As it is, I am pessimistic as hell. I applaud your nerve and your candor, but can only wish there were a million more like you to confront such a Congressman every time he digs up the nerve to leave his office. Kudos and applause. |

58. He can do what Congressmen are supposed to do: LEGISLATE
|
Last edited Mon Jul 16, 2012, 10:40 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) It is Congress' constitutional OBLIGATION to regulate foreign trade.
He can introduce legislation to rip up all of our trade treaties with Red China. He can introduce legislation to rip up most of our trade treaties with Red China. He can introduce legislation to rip up some of our trade treaties with Red China. He can introduce legislation forcing Red China to properly value their currency or, under Article 1, Section 8, we'll do it for them. He can introduce legislation preventing the move on national security grounds. He can introduce legislation forcing Sensata to relocate the displaced workers before the move overseas can take place. I can do this all day long... proposing solutions to this horrible mess, but the reality is, this Congressman's ONLY response was to write a letter to the company CEO and beg him to reconsider screwing over his fellow Americans. Even if all the proposals were to fail, or never make to the House floor - introducing the legislation stopping this bullshit IS worth the attempt. Fuck! Five minutes writing the shit down on paper, two minutes reading it on the floor, and thirty minutes to let 'em all vote on it how they fucking want to vote on it... BUT FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, LEGISLATE! Look, it's just this simple: You're on Red China's side (for whatever reason, to include the value of your stock shares) or your on your American neighbor's side. We can go off on a numberous tangents about capitalism, foreign trade, domestic profitability, et cetera, but it really is as simple as deciding whether you're loyal to either your own democratic republic, or choose to coddle a communist totalitarian state. |

Cheri Bustos is her name and he keeps on saying that she cannot and will not represent the people of the 17th district because she is getting major funding from-GASP!-Chicago Dems including (mostly) Durbin.
One more thing about him; he and David Loebsack have been working in a "bi-partisan" manner to keep any cuts from coming to the Rock Island Arsenal and to finally get a much needed new Interstate 74 bridge spanning the Mississippi River, a bridge which is much needed. Except Schilling voted against the transportation bill which would have guaranteed funding for the bridge. So his "bipartisanship" is just a facade. Not only that, his campaign and the repukes just keep ripping Loebsack. So schilling can kiss my ass and I don't even live in Illinois. |

61. DUDE, YOU KICKED HIS TEABAGGER ASS!

Really fine, man. Blast his RW ass so he thinks before opening his pie hole, and when he does try to give his RW bullshit, perhaps another informed soul will also blast Schilling, you know, based on your little kickass set of remarks.

66. It's Hard to Believe they're Shutting Down the Sensata Plant...

Every local business servicing the Sensata employees in the area will suffer when Sensata closes it's doors - it is going to, literally, kill this town.
