"School refuses scholarship presentation to gay student"Last edited Tue May 8, 2012, 10:22 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
In Clinton, Iowa, there is a school named "Prince of Peace Catholic School" and they are refusing to allow a representative of Iowa's Matthew Shepard Scholarship program to present a sizable scholarship to a young openly gay student.
The school says he can recieve his award on May 20 by a member of the staff. The diocese of Davenport, which rules (or whatever) this region of catholics says having a rep from the scholarship committee violates "policy regarding guest speakers". Whatever. Sounds like they have a policy against gay students accomplishing something good. Btw, the scholarship is for $40,000 which obviously is a lot of money. The kid worked hard to achieve this honor, he should be allowed to get it from a rep. of the scholarship foundation. link: www.qctimes.com right on the front page. The article is titled exactly as I have it in the title line of this post. And there is a link for a petition to right this wrong at the same link. Peace.

1. That's ridiculous

Do they think it reflects badly on them that one of their students earned a high honor? What is wrong with these people?

3. Looks like the school and the school board support the kid

they are the ones who steered him towards the scholarship in the first place. The school signed a letter saying it was ok for the sponsors to present the scholarship. The fact he was openly gay in a Catholic school also says a lot.
Looks like the diocese stepped in. |

4. It always amazes me when the Catholic hierarchy complains about gays.

Good for the student. It sounds like he worked hard for his scholarship and should be allowed to stand proud without all the controversy.
Shame on the diocese. |
