"Coons" became "goons" and is now "punks"...look, it's right here in the prosecutor's affidavit.

George Zimmerman Did Not Use Racial Slur, New Judge Needed in Case?

An affidavit released by the prosecutor who has charged George Zimmerman with second-degree murder in the shooting of Trayvon Martin says he did not use a racial slur in a 911 call made to police shortly before killing the teen.

When a recording was released some who heard it zeroed in on three words to suggest he had uttered a slur; instead, the document filed Thursday says the phrase Zimmerman uttered was "Those f-----g punks."

It also said Zimmerman "profiled" Martin, but did not elaborate.

Some cited the alleged slur as potential evidence for the U.S. Justice Department, which could still bring a hate-crime charge against Zimmerman. And it fed growing outrage over the police department's initial decision not to arrest Zimmerman.

1. I have been talking about this..

with friends of mine for days now they seem to think that a lot of us in the public didn't hear the tape and they are using this to quell racial tensions where there are none and the tape said "fucking coons".

I have even heard some in the media try to pretend that it says fuckiing cold. They know if they keep repeating this just like they do with "Obamacare" everyone they think will believe that this is what it says.

They also seem to think that people will forget the longer it takes to go to trial...

3. It was pretty clear to me and the people in the room

with me. He said fucking coons. I also thought they are trying to defuse the situation by disregarding it.
Pisses me off. This guy catches more breaks than a cat with nine lives.

4. i heard "coons" but

it had already been suggested to me before i listened. i wish i had had a chance to listen to it before anyone put the suggestion in my mind. i have also heard "paul is dead" and "worship satan" and "decide to smoke marijuana" when beatles, led zep and queen records were played backwards - but only after i was told it was there.

6. We know he called him a fucking "something."

I know what you're saying...it's much easier to hear it in there if someone tells you "it's in there."

But whether it's "coons" or "goons" or "punks" or "rapscallions," it's the same as if I said

"Hi, arely staircase, how's it going?"

instead of

"That FUCKING arely staircase..."

The "fucking" part lets you know I'm not going to come up and offer you half of my sandwich, you know?

12. yes, you are right, it is still relevant to his frame of mind and boisters

the state's case that he stalked and confronted the victim. but it would have to be "coons" to trigger a federal civil rights charge.

either way, it doesn't help zimmerman regardless.

20. I also heard "coons" and wondered the same thing

So I had my husband listen to the audio without telling him anything about it before hand. He thought he heard "cones." After listening again, I asked him if it might be "coons," and he said maybe.

But neither of us heard anything that sounded like "punks."

22. yeah, i can't hear "punks" even when i try - and it sounds like "coons" to me

but i still think the prosecutor is smart to stay away from ambiguities.

5. Perhaps someone in custody of the original

is in a better position to analyze it.

If not then let's start disbarment proceedings against the prosecutor because if that's not what the tape says and she knows it isn't then this would be a very, very, very serious breach.

7. That might be premature.

If it is hard to hear, then I'd say the prosecutor is going with something a little less inflamatory and is going to let the jury make up its mind what they hear.

Personally, I thought "coons" was rather clear. Maybe I wasn't listening to the original tape, though.

9. No, the prosecutor does not have that option

She absolutely believes, in her mind, that the word is "punks." Maybe she is wrong, but she isn't going to make false claims as to what the evidence is or will show, particularly since she could have just as easily not mentioned it at all.

17. I believe she knows..

it says "fucking coons" she and her colleagues think it will difuse racial tensions which won't be there unless the media and Bill O'LIElly and friends weren't making everything about race and shouting about how they aren't racist.

They know once the trial begins this will be one of the main talking points in the media and they don't want more people hearing or believing that Zimmerman is saying "fucking coons" when everyone knows what it really says..They aren't fooling anyone.

19. she doesn't need "coons" to make her case "punks" is enough

as amerigo points out "f'ing _______" is enough for her state charges. she would be a fool to try to pin her case on something ambiguous.

10. There will be a meticulous record of

the origin and handling (and details of any enhancement process) of 9-1-1 tapes at trial.

Having not enjoyed that kind of chain of custody on the internet, I tend to defer to their in-house view unless there is a compelling reason for skepticism.

15. even "experts" can be 1.totally right; 2. totally wrong; or 3. PARTIALLY right.

The Feds will have access to the world's best. I want to see what their multiple experts say. But, I think she may have determined that the presence or absence of a racial slur on that particular tape was not critical to the state's case, so she chose to "let it go."

13. She may have simply decided "not to go there," knowing the FEDS....

would be doing complete analysis of that tape and can use it themselves in hate crime prosecution at a later date.

I have listened to several enhanced versions. I can NOT, for the life of me, understand how anyone can hear "punks" from that. The consonants might be in question, but the vowels, certainly are not. The sound is o͞o and most certainly NOT uh to me... But, I will be interested in what the FBI's best experts have to say, since it would be far more germaine to hate crime charges.

16. I did my own analysis of it

And I'm pretty sure he said coons. What I'm 99.9999999% sure of is the first sound of that word is not a "p".

I've spent endless hours editing and mixing live multitrack recordings for band videos etc. I can't look at a waveform display and point out every subtle variation in vocal sounds, but I do have a sharp eye for what we call plosives and sibilants, most commonly p,b and s sounds.

Learning how to quickly scan a vocal track for these sounds do I can check for problems and address them saves me a lot of time.

I looked that 911 tape over real good and I'll be damned if I see a "p" at the start of the word they say is "punks"

21. To me, "they always get away" is much more damning than "fucking whatevers"

He could have uttered a stream of racial slurs from the safety of his vehicle, but instead he charged after Martin under the battle cry "they always get away".

Left unspoken" "THIS ONE isn't getting away, not if this wannabe cop has anything to say about it".
