Belvedere Vodka Unveils Horrific Ad Acting Out Rape SceneLast edited Fri Mar 23, 2012, 03:43 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
Is this the most offensive ad in your recent memory? Questions like that rarely serve much purpose, but I’m genuinely asking — because this is the most awful piece of promotional material I’ve seen published in the last several months, if not years.
The ad I’m referring to, which Jezebel first spotted, was unveiled and then quickly recalled by Belvedere vodka. The ad, as you can see, reads, “Unlike some people, Belvedere always goes down smoothly.” Hah, see, because vodka sometimes doesn’t “go down smoothly!” Just like this woman here… who looks like she’s being sexually assaulted. http://www.thejanedough.com/belvedere-rape-ad/ The War on Women goes Commercial.

They say they are sorry to the people they offended. The classic non-apology says "we're sorry that you were offended". It could still be stronger "We messed up and the ad was very, very wrong", but at least they apologized for offending people.

Without the caption, the image is ambiguous. With it - not so much. Belvedere chose the graceless, tacky, and loaded with sexual innuendo route in their advertising several years ago. This was a test to see how far they could go. They found out - issued a non-apology - and withdrew the test. They'll find something equally tasteless to try out soon, I'm sure. |

"Unlike Some People, Belvedere Always Goes Down Smoothly"
What does that mean? It means that this person, the guy, does NOT go down smoothly. He's a bore, a pawing, arrogant tool. He's not smooth. He's not a playah. The implied scenario is that this guy is an incompetent pick-up artist and is doing it coarsely. They are not standing on a balcony and she is not about to fall over. She is not looking at that brand new BMW he gave her as a gift. If so, the copy might say, "Drinking Belvedere is like getting a BMW as a present: unexpectedly refined. But please don't drink and drive." |

(And feel free to count me out of that group.) No matter the victim, using sexual violence as a punchline is despicable.
But of course, it isn't reversed - it never is (or at most very rarely). It's always woman as target, victim, object, body part, display stand, etc - and that's a far bigger societal problem than any hypothetical difference in the hypothetical response of a hypothetical "we" to your hypothetical reversal... |

That had the theme "smooth like Keith Stone". The guy in this ad, instead of being "smooth" grabs the woman in an unsmooth manner. We have no information to make a firm conclusion. Given that "going down" is a euphemism for performing oral sex, when they say that "unlike some people" (the lady in the picture) the vodka goes down smoothly, the implication of the photo of a woman with a scared look trying to get away from a guy who's grabbing her is that she wasn't "going down" easily and perhaps not voluntarily. Not only is that the reasonable conclusion to be drawn from the ad, I'd say that was exactly what they intended to convey.

It may not be an all out XXX rated pic of forcible penetration, but as a woman, I've been in situations like this and it's awful.

|
What other connotation could "Unlike some people Belvedere goes down smoothly" have? How does a person "go down" other than to perform oral sex? If it's not going smoothly then it must be going roughly. Combined with the photo I don't see how anyone can think anything other than she's not a willing participant.

...already know the name of the Ad agency and be reading the press release detailing the dismissal of everyone involved in producing that advert.
My hunch is that will not happen in this case. So far all we've gotten is a weak "apology". This is a good opportunity to think about how comfortable we are, as a society, with some forms of bigotry as opposed to others. PB |

Especially, someone who's committing an act of rape with the thought that he's having "a bit of fun".
And why wouldn't the woman being raped have an expression of surprise on her face?
Of course, surprise is a suitable reaction as well for a woman being raped, right?
Rape is not some incidence of "misunderstanding"…
It's an act of violence.
By the way, the opposite of "going down easy" is going down hard...
Which is EXACTLY the point of what is happening to that woman in that depiction. (As opposed to the vodka)
She's going down hard. http://projectunbreakable.tumblr.com/ |

Any inoffensive meaning that they might have thought that they were showing is so obscure as to be incomprehensible...I've been looking at this for a while now and I just can't figure out what else they might have been trying to convey with this. Given the image and the language the only interpretation of this that makes sense to me is that she doesn't want to go down on him and he is trying to keep her from getting away...not funny at all and, yes, very offensively makes light of sexual assault.
