What do drivers talk about when they are one the phone for 200 miles?

I was driving home today from Iowa where we sold off the last of my parents estate. The drive takes more than 12 hours and across 4 states.

As I exited the tool booth in western Indiana this mini-van shot past me with personal plates, a woman was driving while talking on her cell phone. This meant that she didn't use turn signals and most likely didn't check to see if anyone was in her path. As she all but cut me off and was well over the speed limit, I took mental note because I have found that you see many of the same vehicles as you travel across country, timing of stops and number of stops causes this to happen.

Halfway across the state this same mini-van passes me, she is still talking, then again as I exit the toll booth in Ohio, I pass her this time as I have the ezy-pass, she is still talking, and a little later, she goes zooming past and guess what she was doing, not picking her nose.

How does anyone talk that long? And think about the distraction that driving causes in that conversation.

6. It may not have been, but she was on the phone that much.

Driving at 75 MPH, is a full-time proposition requiring 100% concentration in that kind of traffic. She was distracted from her conversation with all that driving.

5. She was probably having the same dicussions

we all overhear from people on cell phones while they are driving, walking, shopping, etc.

"Hi! What's new with me? Oh, nothin' - how about you?" This usually leads to, "Gotta go - I have another call," which is followed by, "Hi! What's new with me? Oh, nothin' - how about you?"

It always amazes me how many people have to check-in with everyone they have a phone number for, for the express purpose of telling each other they have absolutely nothing to say.

9. I must be missing something

When I use a phone, it is to say what needs to be said and done.

When I am on the road and the phone rings, if someone is in the car with me, they get to answer my phone. If I am traveling alone, it goes to voicemail and I will call you back when I get out of the car.

I had a bumper sticker on my last vehicle that said: Hang Up And Drive.

14. I was the same way (well, until the car was stolen, lol). If you call when I am driving, I won't be

picking up. PERIOD.

And when I needed to place a call, I pulled over, put the car in park, and THEN dialed.

15. LOVE the bumper-sticker!

My experience has been that when I am in a situation where I can hear discussions (or one end of them) over cell phones, they are invariably about nothing.

The old "guess where I'm calling you from?" conversation died out once everyone had a cell phone, and no one was surprised by "where" anyone was calling from.

This discussion was then replaced by people who have absolutely nothing to say - but feel a need to tell everyone on their call list that they have absolutely nothing to say.

11. More importantly, what kind of loser would be on the other end of that call?

Last edited Sun Jul 28, 2013, 11:13 PM - Edit history (1)

I will never understand the people roaming the aisles at the grocery store with their necks all crooked talking on the phone the whole time -- even when at the register. What kind of loser would sit on the other end of a call that goes like:

"I hate these damn fiber cereals. They all taste like eating gravel. ... Wait a minute, some b#### is trying to cut me off in the coffee section. ... How come there ain't more sugar in these sugar cookies, dayam girl ... etc etc"

Seriously, who is on the other end of those calls?

A guy called me the other day, "just to catch up on things". After about 10 minutes I was ready to get off the phone. He just kept wanting to bring up other subjects. Turns out he was driving to Wyoming. I told him I loved him, but I wasn't going to stay on the phone for 35 hours.

17. I know! Someone blocked the aisle to call home asking whether to buy

a product in the $0.68 package or the slightly larger $1.23 package!

13. I got passed on the 5 north buy an SUV with a huge flat screen in the back

it was showing porn , so I sped up and got close enough to see if I hallucinated it but it was really showing a porn film . I drove with one hand for close to 4 miles .

I agree it seems like people don't drive anymore and pay any attention as if it has become un-cool to just drive like you understood that driving is very serious stuff .
