Dorner's wallet and the crash-proof passport

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Son of Gob (a host of the General Discussion forum).

This Dorner case is weird, nobody can dispute that. And something like this is exactly the sort of thing to make people say "No, wait, what was that?"

One that really blew my mind was the news report that the lead hijacker in 9-11 had a passport found on the hood of a cop car at the crash scene. On the face of it that seems ridiculous. Did you see that fireball?! On one hand, you'd think no conspiracy in the world would be dumb enough to fake something that unlikely. On the other hand, how could anything survive the fireball? As it turns out, a number of personal effects did make it through quite recognizably.

I would slap any writer who put a detail like this in fiction but, as impossible as it seems, it looks like it really did happen.

Truther debunking site. Has some really heartbreaking content.

1. He apparently still had his military ID and his LAPD ID.

He used the military ID to access the Point Loma USN base. The base was put on lockdown when they thought he might still be there.

2. One more time.

What was turned in to the San Diego Police was Dorner's wallet containing his wallet badge and LAPD picture ID.
Most cops carry those in a separate wallet so's not to be ID'd as a cop while off duty.
What was found at the burned out cabin was a wallet with his driver license.

3. I'm No Fire Expert

It seems that a wallet and a driver's license could not survive a 6 hour fire of that magnitude. Are wallets and licenses that indestructible?

4. Honest question.

Today's modern DL's are no longer made of paper or cardboard, most are made of plastic and if his was in a closed wallet, and I'm just guessing here that the wallet was closed, then the fire would have a tough time burning the contents as there would be a lack of oxygen to fuel the fire.
If the wallet was made of leather, then it would stand a much better chance of surviving, and maybe something fell on the wallet, protecting it from the worst of the fire.

Just all speculation of course, but I do have some experience in this.

5. Structure fires do NOT reduce everything uniformly to ash.

And yes, I was a volunteer firefighter for a time, so I know a thing or two.
