Detroit's Belle Isle Park to be sold to developers for "free market utopia"?

As the broken city thinks big and radically about its future, a developer is stepping forward with a revolutionary idea: Sell the city's Belle Isle park for $1 billion to private investors who will transform it into a free-market utopia.

The 982-acre island would then be developed into a U.S. commonwealth or city-state of 35,000 people with its own laws, customs and currency.

City officials are likely to reject the plan. But on Jan. 21, supporters including Mackinac Center for Public Policy senior economist David Littmann, retired Chrysler President Hal Sperlich and Clark Durant, co-founder of Detroit's Cornerstone Schools, will present the Commonwealth of Belle Isle plan to a select group of movers and shakers at the tony Detroit Athletic Club.

Among the confirmed reservations of about 50 people who will hear the pitch are Sandy Baruah, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber, and Beth Chappell, president and CEO of the Detroit Economic Club, organizers say. It's not clear if they know what's in store.

"We are among the people looking for answers to the city's problem," said Rodney Lockwood, a Bingham Farms developer who is the driving force behind the idea.

2. why do you think there's not a chance this or something like it can happen now? the whole

"emergency manager" law that they pushed on the people of michigan after the people expressly voted it down is basically a scheme to put in a dictator that can break contracts & sell off public assets.

i think it's pretty likely this kind of thing *will* happen, sooner rather than later. probably *has* happened on a smaller scale.

not necessarily for a free market utopia, but certainly for free market profit.

5. because I've done some reading about this scheme

11. The emergency manager law was implemented in stages

only the last stage was reversed and then resurrected via a back door process.

The city was an absolute mess when the state stepped in, based on a finding by the Democratic governor. Something had to be done and it was the Michigan's responsibility to act.

Since this proposal is never going to happen I have not followed it closely. Is the EFM actually supporting it?

I have some skin in the game in Benton Harbor.

12. as i understand it, the 1st em law was voted down in its entirety during a voter-instigated

referendum.

within a month, the legislature passed a new em law.

this happened just recently, like nov-december.

13. The law that was voted down was a recent change to the EM law

The predecessor had been on the books for quite some time. However the changes were pretty massive

4. WWLD (What Would Lincoln Do?)

Some rich developers want to buy a city-owned island in the middle of the Detroit River, then secede from the United States, form a country, print money, and create it's own customs?

Yeah, that'll fly.

6. It's good idea

send all the banksters etc. sociopaths that don't like to live communally there. And close the borders and let them live as they like. Self-sufficiently, without being able to force others to work for them. OK, if you are nasty, you can send them few potatoes for permission to shoot Reality TV show of right wing libertarian banksters surviving on their own without slaves to feed and serve them.
