ABC’s Marquardt fumbles JFK facts

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Warren Stupidity (a host of the General Discussion forum).

Corporate McPravda continues to, ah, fumble JFK assassination reportage.

Regarding Robert F. Kennedy and Rory Kennedy's interview in which they expressed their father's thinking on the assassination of President Kennedy:

Fact check: ABC’s Marquardt fumbles JFK facts

Jefferson Morley
January 13, 2013

ABC News correspondent Alexander Marquardt made two factual mistakes in his Good Morning America report today on Robert Kennedy Jr.’s remarks that his father believed “rogue CIA agents” may have been involved in uncle’s assassination.

Marquardt stated, “Now for the first time ever we’re learning that JFK’s own brother and Attorney General RFK was quote ‘fairly convinced’ that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone.”

That is not accurate. RFK’s views had been reported twice previously by credible sources.

SNIP...

ABC News then erred by quoting historian Robert Dallek about the JFK assassination controversy without context. On camera the UCLA historian said that the assassination has been “investigated, re-investigated, investigated again and again and no one’s ever come up with highly credible evidence” to contradict the theory that Oswald acted alone.

1. Um didn't the committee on assasinations say Oswald wasn't a lone wolf?

I'm at work, but I seem to remember they state it was likely a conspiracy, but fell short of making a statement on a second shooter.

2. HSCA reported, based largely on acoustic evidence, assassination likely was a conspiracy.

One of the Dallas PD motorcycle officers in the motorcade apparently recorded the sounds during the assassination, due to a faulty radio microphone that stayed on, leaving impressions on the Dallas HQ Dictabelt recording system. The HSCA did a heck of a job recreating the acoustic signatures, shooting rounds from various locations around Dealey Plaza and comparing the sound wave forms to what the Dictabelt revealed. Details.

From Mary Ferrell:

House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA)

The House Select Committee on Assassinations was the second major investigation of the JFK assassination, following the Warren Commission by nearly a decade and a half. The revelations of the Church Committee were profound in the 1970s, and efforts to re-investigate the assassinations of the 1960s picked up steam. The airing of the Zapruder film on television in 1975, showing Kennedy reacting “the wrong way” to a bullet from the rear, was a defining event which helped push the momentum over the top.

Congress authorized an investigation into the murders of John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Chief Counsel Richard Sprague ran into early troubles, butting heads with the CIA over secrecy oaths among other matters. He was eventually forced to resign, and the investigation was taken over by G. Robert Blakey.

After a few years of work, the House Committee issued a Final Assassinations Report, along with 12 appendix volumes on each of the murders. In the JFK case, the HSCA found that "Kennedy was probably killed as a result of a conspiracy," based in large part on acoustics evidence which captured the sound impulses of gunfire from more than one location in Dealey Plaza. In the MLK case, the HSCA’s verdict endorsed a lone-gunman conclusion but "there is a likelihood that James Earl Ray assassinated Dr. Martin Luther King as a result of a conspiracy."

With the declassification of the HSCA’s files in the 1990s, researchers know much more about that body’s internal workings. In the areas of the medical evidence and Oswald’s trip to Mexico City, two areas the Committee focused heavily on, it is clear that the HSCA did not tell all that it discovered.

Based on new evidence indicating CIA withholding of key information, HSCA Chief Counsel Robert Blakey in 2003 wrote a scathing letter about CIA obstruction of the HSCA inquiry: "I now no longer believe anything the Agency told the committee any further than I can obtain substantial corroboration for it from outside the Agency for its veracity." more

The HSCA asked the Department of Justice to continue the investigation. After Jimmy Carter's defeat, Ronald Reagan and the Justice Department refused.

The CIA, especially, stonewalled the HSCA investigation, sending in George Joannides as their liaison. Of course, the CIA didn't mention the fact Joannides had been CIA management in New Orleans when Oswald was there in the summer of 1963.

3. ABC lies...

RFK Jr. tells us what is wrong with the media today. It sounds like he knows what happened to his father and uncle, and what the media had to do with it.

{Editor's note: this was from before RFK Jr. confirmed those beliefs this past week.}

4. Except that no-one ever has come up with credible evidence.

The wounds and trajectory are consistent with shots fired from the sixth floor of the TSBD, and fired from Oswald's Carcano rifle. An examination of the physical evidence consisting of the wounds to Kennedy and Connally, of recovered bullet fragments, of the evidence of Oswald's rifle, of Oswald's movements immediately following the assassination (including his murder of a Dallas police officer), of his behaviour prior to the assassination (including his taking a shot at Gen Edwin Walker, and his leaving his wedding ring with his wife the night before the assassination), all lead to one conclusion; that Oswald did it, and he acted alone. The wishful thinking of people who refuse to accept that a loser with a cheap mail-order rifle could kill the most powerful man in the world doesn't change the basic evidence. And most of the conspiracy theories seem to be based on a deeply flawed and ahistorical understanding of Jack Kennedy, who was a McCarthyite Cold Warrior who believed in the "domino effect" in Southeast Asia, who was committed to the US mission in Vietnam, who wasn't trusted by the liberal wing of his own party, and who probably would have voted for Nixon if he hadn't gotten the Democratic nomination in 1960 (Bobby Kennedy did in fact vote for Ike and Nixon in '56, rather than for Adlai Stevenson). The idea of Kennedy-as-liberal-martyr on the altar of the military-industrial complex is so ludicrous as to not even merit consideration. The only really vaguely plausible conspiracy theory (which is totally unsupported by any evidence) is the idea that the Mafia were behind the assassination as revenge for feeling double-crossed after Mob associates of Joe Kennedy's swung the election by just enough in West Virginia and Illinois for JFK to eke out a win and then JFK's Justice Department went after them anyway.
