Al Gore, progressive leader one minute, wanting to cash in big time the next...

http://politicalwire.com/archives/2013/01/03/al_gore_pushed_for_sale_before_higher_taxes.html

Al Gore Pushed for Sale Before Higher Taxes
Interesting tidbit from the New York Times on the sale of Current TV:

"Mr. Gore and his partners were eager to complete the deal by Dec. 31, lest it be subject to higher tax rates that took effect on Jan. 1... But the deal was not signed until Wednesday."

The tax bite is not my concern. Al Jazeera is expected to cancel all of the programing now on Current TV. Not to mention the political hay the right wingers will make of this when 30% of the programming is coming out of the ME per the plan.

"crazy about Gore".

You might also watch his speech to the American Constitution Society from which much of TAOR is based...

it was the single speech that sold me on Gore forever and left me disappointed that he felt Climate Change be a more important part of life than political activities. He has his reasons and i'm glad he's following his heart.

Only suggesting the reading of a book. My love for the man can be seen as "hero worship", i suppose. If you meant to demean me by calling it that- i don't mind one bit. I'll stand tall and say yes- Al Gore IS a hero of mine. Do whatever you need to to make yourself feel better.

164. LOL...

But why should it be demeaning? There is nothing wrong with your wholehearted embrace of Gore, I was simply commenting on my inability to get that enthusiastic about anyone. I voted for him even though he was as boring as watching paint dry. I didn't agree with him distancing himself from the best campaigner to come along in at least a generation and have often thought he could have carried that one additional state needed to win if he had been more politically astute. Think about how different things would have been had he won. But that is simply my opinion.

And yes, thanks for the recommendation.

Happy New Year.

Do you try not to get the best price? Do you pass up tax deductions you are eligible for on principal?

There is some hypocrisy here, but it isn't Al Gore.

pass up deals based on both principle and principal. I look for socially responsible funds when investing, it is a matter of principle with me. Too few people know the difference when it comes to investing their principal. I believe in the principle "from those to whom much is given much is expected". I have had far fewer advantages in life than Al Gore but I know the difference.

Would you have him sell to Glen Fucking Beck if the price was right?? Really.

72. You don't put people on pedestals and expect them to be 100% perfect to all

the media keeps putting President Obama down for not being 100% on every single thing
and misses the big picture each time

Then the people that follow this writer or that Rachel or Krugman quote rail on and on

Yet Bernie Sanders voted for the deal and did so enthusiastically
And Dennis voted for the health plan enthusiastically
when a 60th vote is there, they are team players

they are not any different than any of us

You take the people's assets
You minus the bad
then tally it up

because no human being is perfect to anyone's liking

so whining about this or that in the media is ridiculous

and only Al Sharpton gets it right 100% of the time
Rachel and Ed lost me after debate #1. No longer watch either, and won't again.

Everybody does it.

That is the point.

villifying money when anyone would do it is like stereotypiing anyone

there is good money and bad money but everyone would want more.

Again, no one is ripping anyone at all.

So you agree that there should be zero negative comments on both President Obama and

Bloomberg Gave a Ton of Money to Charity in 2011

Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave $311.3 million to charity last year. If that sounds like a lot, it's because it is: Not only was it about $32 million more than he'd given the previous year, but he gave the fifth most of anyone in the country, reports the Post. The amount by which Bloomberg increased his philanthropy nearly lines up with the $30 million he pledged last summer for his pet project, a new city program meant to "improve the circumstances" of young minority men.

Bloomberg's contributions to that program were matched by George Soros, the New York billionaire who just so happens to occupy the spot just above his on the charitable rankings, with $335 million doled out. There was just one living person ahead of the pair on the list, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen

82. $2.4 billion in charty total, all liberal causes

http://www.mikebloomberg.com/index.cfm?objectid=B96D19BD-C29C-7CA2-F72C5EDC3BEDFA6A

Mike Bloomberg has always believed in the power of philanthropy to change people's lives for the better. Mike's parents instilled the principles of public service and giving back in him from a young age, and those same principles have guided him throughout his life. That's why he has committed so much of his time, energy and resources to the causes he believes in through Bloomberg Philanthropies. To date, he has donated more than $2.4 billion to a wide variety of causes and organizations. In 2011, $330 million was distributed by Bloomberg Philanthropies, placing Mike in the top five of The Chronicle of Philanthropy's list of America's top 50 philanthropists.

Environment: Serving as Chair of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, Mike Bloomberg is working with the world’s largest cities to implement climate mitigation programs that will help reduce their green house gas emissions (GHGs); and an investment in the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign to help eliminate one-third of the nation’s top polluting coal plants by 2020.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/04/nyregion/new-york-plan-will-aim-to-lift-minority-youth.html?_r=3&pagewanted=all?src=tp&
Bloomberg to Use Own Funds in Plan to Aid Minority Youth

The administration of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, in a blunt acknowledgment that thousands of young black and Latino men are cut off from New York’s civic, educational and economic life, plans to spend nearly $130 million on far-reaching measures to improve their circumstances.

The program, the most ambitious policy push of Mr. Bloomberg’s third term, would overhaul how the government interacts with a population of about 315,000 New Yorkers who are disproportionately undereducated, incarcerated and unemployed.

To pay for the endeavor in a time of fiscal austerity, the city is relying on an unusual source: Mr. Bloomberg himself, who intends to use his personal fortune to cover about a quarter of the cost, city officials said. A $30 million contribution from Mr. Bloomberg’s foundation would be matched by that of a fellow billionaire, George Soros, a hedge fund manager, with the remainder being paid for by the city.

I support higher taxes so I would not be looking for a way to pay less.

I also have somewhat of a chip on my shoulder about multi-millionaires who pretend to care about the needy during their 7 course meal in one of their multiple houses, so my opinion is probably a little slanted.

tyranny of the calender along with it, I'll either end up paying far more in taxes than I need to, or go out of business because I'm being stupid.

Has nothing to do with being a millionaire, it has everything to do with being prudent and pro-active in running a business in a way that minimizes your tax liability...all done legally and within the rules set by the IRS itself.

because why would someone not do it

The point is, everybody would do it.

This is for the media who is so holier than though, but they wouldn't not do it either

Which is the point.

BTW, this is from the left wing NY Times and T. Goodard's site.
I only posted what everyone else posts from his site

Notice by the way that those in the media that put down the Clinton's, one thing is for sure, they did not have any money til after Bill left office, never had a home
and they never had a dynasty.

Al Gore is the son of a presidential father who wanted but did not get there.

The point being, if Bernie Sanders and the others had a father who ran for president, would those immediately say no go Bernie, dynasty and all that.

Hillary45 in 2016. She won't be stopped

Maybe it could be a Clinton/Gore team, though I would doubt Hillary would want that.

If I didn't have a doc appointment, would have been here the whole time, like I do on every other thread I debate on.

This is a good thing. It shows heroes aren't perfect

Which is why LBJ was so great, nobody's perfect, but you take the good, subtract a bad or three and you come up with greatness

All the media putting President Obama down missed the whole big picture, as they always do.

Only the Rev. Al Sharpton called it correct from day one.

It is why I myself don't idolize Bernie or Dennis and Al Franken, over others.
Daschle and Gephardt and Bruce Babbitt were good people. Some don't like some things, others like other things. Me, I like Dick Durbin too.
Tom Daschle almost gave up his life trying to avoid voting for Iraq. Never gets the due.
People call him DNC or that new name people make bad out of now.

And I love Al Gore, and if I had that type money damn right I would do the same thing he did.
I was on hoping he would avenge his not being on the placemat of the presidents in 2004.
But he walked away, funny thing is, he did so on SNL in a skit with Al Franken of all people.
Never quite understood why he didn't go for the rematch. But it was good he gave everybody alot of time to prepare for a different choice.
And I was on Al Gore's draft Gore site in 2003 and still am on the Gore board today.
So I do like what he has done

115. But when push comes to shove, they get the votes, as winners always do

Bernie and Dennis and Franken have their role

As Kris Kristofferson said
freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose
Bernie and Dennis will never be president, as Kris said, that means they are free to do as they please without needing to win nationwide votes.

except when their vote is needed I guess, as 100% of the time when 60 is needed, they do the correct thing
team players always do

the idolizing of certain over others makes no sense, as one for all all for one when push comes to shove

(though it reminds me of Ron Paul fans, now he is making $50grand for a 45 minute or less speech.)

remember we all want a continuation of President Obama for years to come after 2017.

Won't listen to Rachel or Ed ever again

Al Sharpton was the one and only one who called it like I did, 100% correctly

and yes, trying to max the profit is a good thing.
Are you now saying it is bad?

but I see many in media trashing Obama and Hillary.
I do hope she tells McCain to screw off and doesn't testify. She is not required to as a private citizen. The rightwing conspiracy she talked about years ago is still there.

162. I lived in NJ for decades and did not ever see the media go after Menendez

The closest was they reported and then debunked the Kean charges. This happened even in the very Republican Morris county papers.

The media has been extremely supportive of Hillary Clinton other than the right wing fringe. The NYT postulated a run for President for her in 1992 before she personally ran for anything.

Not to mention, what kind of logic says that if the media did mistreat some people, you should impute bad motives to Al Gore?

As to testifying, Clinton said, before her illness, that she WANTED to testify. Wouldn't you in her position? Testifying allows her to answer any questions rather than having people think that she did something wrong. (Remember Lieberman, who read the report, said the report did not indicate that she did anything wrong.) As to being a private citizen 1) SHE IS STILL SOS and 2) Committees can and do call private citizens to appear.

42. Business and Politics

Are they not the reason we are in this mess in the first place. I seem to remember an old saying that they should not mix.
It is one thing to practice business policy, it is quite another to advocate certain policies for other people, then avoid them yourself.
If you wanted to avoid the taxes then why advocate to raise them. Find other ways to secure a better budget then. Cut Congressional pay and benefits, lifetime medical, zero interest loans from "Friends". There were a lot of carve outs for special cases in the fISCAL cLIFF, putting needy people at risk for the Rich on both sides. Same as the Sandy bill, so many carve outs for buddies on both sides, the people ravaged by the storm are being held hostage so FAT CATS get more. So no big deal, nothing to see here. Are we that filtered that as long as they are on our side, BS is okay.

It's a real slap-in-the-face when we later discover that the GOP secretly funded Nader's campaign in 2000.

I don't appear to read the dis everyone else on this thread is reading. When I read the OP, it felt as if the Original Poster was trying to point out how the media is attacking Al Gore again - and they are. A brief trip to PuffPo will show you as much.

And usually wraps those attacks in backhanded compliments of Clintons. Transparent to most of us.

83. 100% of my posts are Pro-Obama, Pro-Hillary45,Pro-Durbin, Pro-Daschle, Pro-Gephardt,Pro-Crist

whereas there are way too many anti-Obama, anti-Hillary45 posts in the media.

It's as if people don't want to send out the strongest team in 2016 to win the big game

And 100% of all Pro-Obama Kennedy's in the family.
Funny how the best candidate for senate seat would be Vicky Kennedy using getting guns out of the street but hopefully in 2014.

Would love to see an Hillary45/Vicky Kennedy46 ticket in 2016

Mass could get a national leader if it elects Vicky in 2014, after Markey may or may not get the seat in the special.
Not that I don't like him, but he is no shoo in and nationally nobody knows him.
Whether he can win the 1/2 of the state that is not liberal is an unknown.

123. Epic Fail then, I guess Al has to pay up. He really does have bad timing.

Lots of people look to save money on taxes. They put more money in retirement accounts, give to charity, induce labor, push to close on the purchase of their home to pay less closing costs etc. I don't doubt that he was looking to save some money. However, his taxes were raised anyway. I no longer have that channel since my cable company ditched it. Time Warner is a pretty large cable company, serving many communities so the value of the channel has plummeted, at least until they come to a deal with Al Jazeera. So, it looks like he came out ahead in the deal anyway.

136. This thread a few days ago...note my post #8.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=348786

the point is consistency
as said, nothing wrong with anything Al Gore or the CEO's in other companies did or tried to do

but some consistency is nice

and Al Gore was screwed by Ralph Nader.
The 4 electoral votes of NH put Bush over the top. NOT Florida a month later, but in November.

How any democrat who likes (or even dislikes) Gore can like Ralph Nader I do not know.
He was propped up by republicans, financed by republicans and he was happy with the result of 2000, as it allowed him to continue to rant to the tune of millions in speeches(much like Ron Paul).

Nader was legally allowed to do what he did too. Just seems foolhardy to defeat the most green nominee of any MAJOR political party perhaps ever for an egotistal run.

And the total votes cast in 2000 were 5 to 10 million LOWER than any recent history elections.
I attribute that to the voters who stayed home believing nader both party are the same lies.

We are suppose to know that wasn't true. Not to defend Ralph Nader. Who maybe could have gotten a job in the Gore admin working in the Interior dept. or something had he actually wanted to do the grunt work needed instead of the easy way out bloviating.

Time and again, Al Gore has found his passions lead him to fight for the interests of the powerful over the weak, the rich over the poor, and, most of all, his own pocketbook uber alles.

Now can he sell you some carbon offsets or not?

that those on our side take advantage of things like that so someone like Gore can put what he saved to good use. Why the heck should those on our side have to pay while those on the other side do everything they can to avoid paying??

There's nothing wrong with dabbling in the free market. He tried, met moderate success, and now wants to move on to other areas that perhaps represent his core competencies. He created jobs in the process and is not destroying those jobs in order to cash out when it was time to move on. If he was just a hypocrite, he'd've sold the network to Glenn Beck. He sold Current to alJazeera and saved people their jobs. Even in the free market, Gore is "putting people first."
