Many members are working hard here to come up with common sense gun control measures

I wish our politicians worked this hard for common sense gun control
instead of knee jerk reactions. And bills that accomplish nothing but pander.

1. seriously?

I can't comment on the "working-hard", but I can comment on the proposals

Can we be honest- Most of the proposals that are proposed are non-starters. Whether they are good in theory is irrelevant if they wouldn't even be able to become law. Good proposals don't include things like "taxing ammo 100000%", because we all know that isn't going to happen. My own theory is that many posters get some enjoyment out of making ridiculous suggestions. I have some friends that do that as well- I don't get it.

but there's been a few good ideas floated around.

8. Very Few IMO

I find the majority of the posts contain either repealing the 2nd amendment, or taxing ammunition out of existence

5. You can encourage actions beneficial to society at lower tax rates and there are other

ways to discourage prurient gun behaviour so prevalent today.

9. I'm not saying the taxes wouldn't work in theory

I'm saying they won't work in reality because they will never be passed.

7. There's a great deal of frustration on this issue that goes into the snark

Life and death issue that's been played footsie with for decades now and a lot of us don't think that anything will happen this time, what's the point of being completely serious?

It's not like what we do here has that much effect on the real world although Google trawls DU pretty hard.

13. I don't doubt it

I just feel (and this is my opinion only) that when you start going down that road you almost guarantee your failure.

I'll be honest- I'm generally pro-gun but I think we need to do something to stop these shootings- what that is, I don't know. I have a few ideas myself. What scares me more is that these types of attitudes will spread beyong this forum and turn this "Great gun debate" into nothing more than soundbite talking points being slung by one talking head at the other.

It could just be a pet peeve of mine and I could be out of line with this. I don't know.

18. You need someone pushing for the extreme position, the other side does it constantly

Compromise means coming up somewhere in the middle, if you start already half way to the other side's position your final compromise will not be optimum.

At least that's the way I see it, if you want something reasonable as a final compromise you have to start out at least somewhat unreasonable.

19. to a point

unreasonable yes, completely off the spectrum no.

I just see the proposals here and they aren't just unreasonable, they are off the spectrum.

20. Well, the other side is completely off the spectrum: How about human waves of first graders?

Have you seen anything here on DU remotely as unhinged as this proposal?

And bear in mind this woman is a paid conservative writer, a professional, not some blog commenter.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/12/17/there-s-little-we-can-do-to-prevent-another-massacre.html

I'd also like us to encourage people to gang rush shooters, rather than following their instincts to hide; if we drilled it into young people that the correct thing to do is for everyone to instantly run at the guy with the gun, these sorts of mass shootings would be less deadly, because even a guy with a very powerful weapon can be brought down by 8-12 unarmed bodies piling on him at once.

6. I appreciate the Presidents effort but what would those people know about gun control?

Holder would know about it "sure"

I just don't like the guy. I wish Obama would replace him.

16. I think the folks he had at the meeting was a good choice.

Duncan = Education/Schools
Sebelius = Health/Mental Health
Holder = Justice/Guns

An all around approach will be needed, it's not only about gun control.

11. I thought about that a long time ago

Before I was a member here.

BATF isn't set up for that .

The agency would have to triple in force and then some.

12. They're chomping at the bit for such a proposal. They'd happily take our tax dollars to make it

happen. I'd be happy to give my tax dollars to them for this piece of mind.

15. I don't think so

BATFE has enough on their plate already. The organization is in shambles (can't even get a true director). Do you really want to put your faith in such an organization

plus again- its not going to pass congress so why bother
