I remember doing fire drills as a elementary student....

I remember doing fire drills as a elementary student....

One of the saddest moments (among many) for me today was a report from a local teacher I heard on NPR on the way home tonight.

There was a teacher reporting in about how she and her students reacted to the sounds of gunfire. She reacted quickly and got the students to hide as they had been taught (drilled) to do. Some children cried, some were scared, others simply had a blank stare of shock.

Had been taught.......

I remember doing fire drills as far back as I can remember in my school days. I can't imagine doing a drill for a "nut bag with a gun" rampage.

Had been taught... A child, in an elementary school, being taught how to react to a massacre by firearm.

Our children are TAUGHT to deal with a "nut bag with a gun" rampage situation.

Yes TODAY is the day to talk about guns, gun laws, violence, mental disorders, and how we deal with the coexistence of them.

TODAY! Right NOW!

Tomorrow is far to late to do so.

1. Ours included evacuations

Being kids in a private Jewish school in Mexico...we had to evacuate for a bomb threat and when the Pope first came a sniper took position. The school was evacuated. Don't ask e if the thread was real or not, we had no need to know. In HS I checked the school for bombs before school started.

I pretty much had te same reaction you had by the way...we are a sick society

2. I was in grammar school in the 1960s we had air raid drills.

The idea that the rights of someone to blast away at a target somewhere or be armed to the teeth out of fear of some unspecified threat or paranoia over government overreach outweighs the rest of society, including small children's right to live without fear is obscene in my opinion.

4. So was I. We were taught to hide under our desks.

A lot of good that would have done to protect us from atom bomb fallout.

5. I had this thought in my mind as I wrote the post.

I missed (thankfully) the days of duck and cover nuclear weapons drills that would be pointless.

However in my mind, this is a different animal.

This is not about two feuding countries that could possibly go to war, this is about a lone nut job with a gun.

I don't have the answers. I just know that it MUST be discussed and that things must change.

The answer is not more drills or armed guards at metal detectors in our schools.

However, we must find an answer to this comprehensive and more common problem.

Drills are not that answer imo.

9. Of the things that I DID list,

the occurrence of only tornadoes are entirely natural phenomena
the nut job with a gun goes in with those first 3

3. I had to participate in a school drill for

a chemical attack or HazMat emergency where the doors and windows were sealed with duct tape and sheeting. Thank goodness it didn't last long. The AC was turned off, too.

It's a scary thing to think about and prep for.
