After dinner conversation : "They're coming after your IRA."

So we had Thanksgiving dinner at a friend's house.
Just the four of us.
We're in our 70s except for Miz t. who is still a couple of years shy of the septuagenarian mark.

Our hosts are about as thick as two planks.
Seriously.
Both of them.
Especially when it comes to politics and world and national affairs.
We're still 'friends' only because we go WAY back.
He was my best man at our wedding.

Since those days over 40 years ago, Miz t. and I have somehow managed to evolve with the times.
Our friends are stuck in the 50s and 60s.

Anyway, after dinner we're having another glass of wine at the table and he hits me with...
"Have you heard anything about how the government is going to take over our IRAs and make us put it in the stock market?"
"No. Where did you get that?"
"I read it somewhere. Or maybe I saw it on the internet."
(They watch Fox news because it's 'fair and balanced' and read Newsmax.}
"You can't be serious. How, exactly, would the 'government' (read 'Obama') go about doing that.
"I dunno."
"Look...think about it. There's no way the president or anybody else could do that. How would they go about it? Those are private accounts. You can't seriously believe that."
"Well...all I know is that's what I heard."
"And you believe it?"
"I dunno, that's just what I heard. I worry about it."

I'm really ready to rip my hair out at this point. How the hell do you communicate with someone this stupid?
Answer: You can't.
So I just said If you need something to worry about, worry about global climate change,
He doesn't believe in it.

We left a few minutes later.
And looked at each other and just shook our heads on the way home.

1. My IRAs are invested in the stock market.

Not sure how to explain it to your friends, though.

4. Did they work in the *public* sector?

Last edited Fri Nov 23, 2012, 07:56 PM - Edit history (1)

There's been talk that the RW has been studying the possibility ( and legality) of states declaring bankruptcy to void pension.... and presumably 401K.... obligations.

Edit: ooops. That's "public."

No... I wasn't getting pornographic.

9. He was an airline pilot, she was a cabin attendant.

I'm sure they both voted for Rmoney.
He's a conspiracy nut.
Believes the 'government' is 'covering up' for all sorts of bad things that have happened.
Usually those that he attributes to a Democratic administration.

5. maybe you should have mentioned that is what the

republicans want to do with Social security and he was just confused.

Yeah, I have a friend that believes that FOX is the only station that tells the truth, that is why they have different news.

6. So just where are their IRA's? Because, something in excess of all IRA's are in the stock market.

There are options available, but relatively few Americans exercise them.

They are what they are and there's no way I'll change them.

13. That has happened, and it didn't change them. Story:

Their son married a woman from an eastern European country.
She had to have a series of inoculations to be able to come here.
Some which she shouldn't have if she was pregnant.
Turned out that AFTER the shots she found out she WAS pregnant.
After some pre-natal tests she had an abortion.

Our friends told us about this at dinner at our house.
I bit my tongue.
I didn't say that if it weren't for Democrats that option wouldn't have been available to her.

Later, she was pregnant again.
It wasn't a 'convenient' time for them to have another kid (they had one) due to financial circumstances.
She had another abortion.
Now they have 3 kids and are barely scraping by.
jeez

11. The idea Bush had to privatize Social Security is nearer to this fear.

Just like the NRA put out stories Obama was going to take their guns and what resulted was more donations to NRA to prevent something which was not going to happen. I listen to RW shows to find out what the RW bunch is going to tell me next, fact check the stories and attempt to properly inform the RW's the real truth. I start to feel sorry for the unnecessary worry placed on some citizens by the rag magazine reporting.

14. Variations of this story have been going around for decades.

I remember hearing it about Bill Clinton. The most common versions I've heard is that the government is going to seize everyone's private retirement accounts and "redistribute" them, or use them to bail out Social Security.

15. I cashed in my IRA during the Wall Street fiasco.

Every time I received a statement, the balance went down, down. So I just cashed it in, and it is now sitting in my savings account.

16. Ireland did it.

I don't think it could happen anytime soon in America, however, Ireland has don't something similar to the OP's comment. I'm not sure how it went, I just remember reading about it a last year.

18. LMFAO...

Ireland has approx 6.4 million people in their country. NYC alone has 8.4 million.

This is as dumb as "they are going to take our guns". Do people even think about the logistics of doing something like this?
