"As long as it's accompanied by significant spending cuts"

Boehner, who presented his framework for a broad tax-and-spending overhaul to be undertaken in 2013, also sounded an optimistic note.

"To show our seriousness, we've put revenue on the table, as long as it's accompanied by significant spending cuts," Boehner said. "It's going to be incumbent on my colleagues to show the American people we're serious."

The first part of such a deal would be legislation this year that would commit Congress to specific revenue increases, favored by Democrats, and spending cuts, as advocated by Republicans. How those increases and cuts would be achieved would be worked out in the second stage next year by the new Congress.

Not addressed was how to resolve the standoff over this year's expiring tax rates. Resolving the tax breaks for wealthier Americans remains, in many ways, the linchpin to a deal.

Gee, I wonder which "significant spending cuts" that Boehner has in mind?

1. I say we cut Congresspersons pay and benefits first off.

They're being compensated way too much for the meager work they're doing.

3. Second thing would be to end the war in Afghanistan.

Actually, maybe this should be the first thing we do. Then, by all means, cut their pay. In fact, I wonder what might happen if we had an all-volunteer Congress.

5. This "compromise" mantra is unconscionable.

The poor and the middle class in this country have been systematically looted for thirty years.

We just won a landslide. We should be talking about justice and reparations.

6. Yes and after the spending cuts, the Republicans get back in power and cut taxes.

Then, OMG, we've got to fix the deficits again by cutting spending.

There needs to be an amendment to the Constitution that bans cutting taxes if doing so would cause a deficit.
