I will NEVER eat Papa John's again....

In direct response to:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/09/papa-johns-obamacare-john-schnatter_n_2104202.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular

John Schnatter can kiss my ass. I hope he loses every single employee that is worth a damn, ends up crippling his business and eventually dies a lonely broken man in the remnants of his palatial estate like an echo of "Citizen Kane", only instead of 'Rosebud', may his dying words be 'Obamacare'.

Sorry, but FUCK HIM!

Well in my book Godfathers makes a worse pizza. It is their sauce, I simply hate the flavor of their sauce. How one would think that taking a perfectly good tomato sauce and adding clorox bleach to it is an improvement utterly astonishes me.

But this is bad too. You can't beat a small locally owned pizza shop for pizza. Any chain place is likely to be mediocre to bad.

63. We finally got a Papa John's in my town. Not impressed and i don't like Domino's

either. We have the king of mom and pop pizza places here. At least this side of Chicago. They have a pizza that has a sweet hot mustard sauce, german sausage, sour kraut and onions. It's wildly popular. Never any specials or coupons and that place is slammed all the time.

That place is called Fazzari's. If I want pizza, it's theirs or Papa Murphy's.

89. The sad thing is...

I live in a town in settled by Italians. Still has a huge Italian-American presence.

And Papa Johns and Pizza Hut are the best pizza in town.

It's one of the more frustrating parts about living here - the "Italian food" is made by Hunts and Smart & Final.

I have no delusions that Yum Brands (owners of Pizza Hut) are liberal. But at least they're not "Papa" John.

61. The best

pizzas, as compared to the chains, are those found at Aldi's. They're frozen and made in either Italy or Germany. Cost from $2.99 to $3.99. Don't get the ones made in US. I like the thin crust, not the rising crust. They're always seasonal (red price sign vs. black sign). I got a 4 Cheese the other day...made in Italy. To die for. I went back and bought 5 more.

Some are made in France as well. I do put a bit a cheese on them...but this 4 cheese one really didn't need that. Damn, they're good....and so reasonably priced. I love those Aldi brothers. They own Trader Joe's as well. Lots of good European foods are offered at Aldi's. YUM. I rarely shop anywhere else.

And I think they're better than some of the mom and pop places I've gone to.

Oh, off topic, but their facial skin cream is great and only $3.99 for a jar. No mineral oil, of course.

You're lucky to be in the NW. I used to be in SF. Now stuck in Ohio, but Aldi's has helped me as well as the local hospital's cafeteria. Healthy food and so damn cheap. A great salad bar. I get a huge salad w/ meats and at most I've spent $3.50. Maybe other cities have hospitals w/ good food. There is a Pasta bar, a deli, and then the 'Special for the Day.'

Papa John can go bankrupt.

107. Not sure Aldi still owns TJ's

One of the three Aldi brothers was a co-owner of TJ's, but he died a while back.

Interestly, Aldi isn't the quaint little chain they appears to be. The Albrechts are two of the richest men in Germany, and the Aldi chain is actually a couple of different companies with thousands of stores around the globe.

For the best pizza, buy from a local guy! That said, as far as frozen pizzas go, Trader Joes has some of the best I've tried.

127. I know they are a super big

chain...the biggest grocer in Europe. Last I heard was that the 2 brothers were in a big tiff and not talking to each other....who knows? I was told that TJ's was placed into a Trust so it couldn't be screwed with. But I don't know for sure.

I can't afford to drive 65 miles round trip to buy expensive stuff at TJ's. And their pizzas are not as good as Aldi's. I've tried a number of them.

I've never had a pizza as good as the ones from Aldi's. Why? The crust is different due to the wheat that is grown in Europe...entirely different from the crap wheat we grow here. My stomach can't handle the wheat grown here. I call it 'Wonder Bread' wheat.

As for the local pizza dude, I no longer have the pleasure of living in San Fran or other foodie cities. I'm stuck in Ohio where Applebee's is considered Haute Cuisine. I'm not kidding. I never go out to eat. It's all chains or disgusting Mexican and Chinese foods which is nothing like REAL Mexican or Real Chinese food. No dim sum on the weekends. Just Moo goo gai pan...which doesn't even exist in China. It's a made-up American dish. That's what is here.

It's so funny, people will tell me to go to a great place to eat and it's just shit. If one has been out of the Heartland, and returns, there are few places to eat. Honestly, the 99 cent bean burrito at Taco Bell is better than what I get at a Mexican restaurant here. I even went to an expensive place.....$9.00 burrito. AWFUL.

I never shop at Walmart....I can't give up my Aldi's, too. I hate Kroger's. And I hate Meijer's. I only go there for something that is on sale. That's all there is. No local butchers anymore. Farmer's market in the summer. That's it. I get all my salads at the local hospital which has a fabulous and cheap cafeteria. It's the best restaurant outside of San Fran.

I now cook...I have to if I want something good to eat.

Hell, if prices keep going up, I'll have to give up eating altogether.

124. They have

lots of women working there....and women managers, at least. I'll have to ask them how they like it. I know they work very hard.

I think the only store that is Union around here is Kroger...and I hate that place. I buy very little there. I am constantly being overcharged and they never have the Express Lanes open. I email HQ all the time. I've talked to the store manager who could give a shit. I only buy what is on sale, so it is only a few items....I just can't afford their prices. But I do NOT shop at Walmart, if that redeems me in your eyes a bit.

I really like the international foods of Aldi's. And I buy food not even made in the US...it's made in Italy, Germany or France. Especially the crusts of the pizzas....they grow an entirely different wheat than we do. And it doesn't upset my stomach like pizzas made here.

Their chocolates are from Europe. The US can't make chocolate. I try not to buy much in the way of processed foods and cook from scratch as much as possible. It's cheaper and better for you.

Now I'll feel bad about shopping at Aldi's. Maybe I can plant a seed for them to unionize!

There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch

The cost of those "free" pizzas are built into the advertising budget. The advertising cost is built into the price of the regular pizzas.

But yes, Schnatter can afford to raise his prices by 12 cents (averaged), but in the long run, he can't afford to squeeze his employees or he'll get an uncompetitive workforce.

I worked in the food industry for over 20 years.
Most places pay very little for their product and
turn around and make a huge profit. Also, giving
away free pizzas gives this douche bag another
tax write off for his business. You would be amazed
at the mark up on product for profit once it's
finally sold to John and Jane Q public.

Both Papa John's and Applebees are minimum wage operations as far as their restaurant employees are concerned. I highly doubt they were ever even offered any health insurance, so these guys are "taking away" something they never bothered to offer in the first place.

or whatever it's called, where filthy rich CEOs are SHOCKED to find out their employees can't make ends meet on poverty level wages. Then they give a tiny fraction of their own earnings that's too small to measure to one or two employees and pat themselves on the back for being benevolent angels of mercy.

Getting rich off the backs of those he exploits, cluelessly believing he's a victim, and wondering why everyone isn't living like he is instead of choosing to be poor.

36. Must be something with the Naples, Fl., blazing sun which

fries people's brains here. I don't eat GROSS PIZZA. I have been making my own, including the sauce from scratch, for decades. My husband brought a few slices into work (Naples) and his coworkers were raving about it. They were literally STEALING it from the fridge if they saw it. Because of this, he "volunteered" me to make pizza for them (at cost). Thanks. Yes, I have made them pizza for their families, and office, and personal parties. I charge the SAME (ingredients and my time) as Papa John's, but if he put all the (unusual) toppings, and FRESH ingredients, on that I do, he would be charging $30 a pie, WITHOUT Obamacare. I wouldn't eat disgusting pizza and I wouldn't let my friends and coworkers eat it either.

Hear that, Poppa? I am taking BUSINESS away from you, but don't worry since I am a lazy, on the government dole (taxes pay my salary) I have no intention of opening a small pizza business in Naples, Florida. I just do it because I like cooking, don't want YOUR gross pizza, and want to please PEOPLE.

40. This is nothing new. Papa John's has always restricted employee hours.

My son worked as a driver at the local outlet for about a year. They employed a couple dozen people between the drivers, cooks, counter people and assistant managers.

NONE of them were allowed to work anything close to full time hours. Not one. For drivers, they paid minimum wage plus $0.50 per delivery. My son finally figured out how little he was actually making considering his gas and the wear and tear on his junker car, and quit.

Papa John's has always abused, exploited and bullied its employees. By blaming Obamacare, they're just lying about why they do what they have always done.

99. Darden Restaurants (Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and others) is planning on cutting hours too

Walmart has done it for a long time as well. They offer health insurance, but only to their full time employees who are mostly managers. Walmart is the number one employer for Medicaid and food stamp recipients. The US taxpayers are subsidizing Walmart by over $2 Billion every year. The same goes for any large employer that refuses to offer health insurance to their employees. Their employees' healthcare costs - through Medicaid, county clinics and using emergency rooms for primary care - are being born by you and I. In the case of Papa John's, he said he would have to raise the price on the pizzas by a whopping 14 cents each. I don't know about you, but I would be okay with that.

Like you, I hope he loses every employee worth a damn.

The pizza chains compete under the same rules, but if Schnatter wants to compete by squeezing his employees, he is going to lose the best ones. In today's world, dumbing down your workforce is a competitive FAIL.

I may get blasted for this, but it seems to me that employers all over the country have worked within one system where they ignore their employees' lack of healthcare. Now that system will be changing and to deny this change or pretend that nothing will change for employers is to ignore reality.

Employers will do what they can do to lower costs. That's not just Papa John; That's all employers. We should be thanking Papa John because he openly stated what thousands of other employers are probably planning behind closed doors. Obamacare is the "law of the land" now. Papa John isn't campaigning against it, and if he is then he's too damn late.

Obamacare will be a massive change for this country. We can't just go off all unhinged every time someone suggest it may not be the perfect system. That would make us republicans... ewww. We are Democrats. We are pragmatic. We can honestly evaluate problems with the system and change it for the better.

Remember everyone: this is essentially a republican health plan. And republicans are horrible at these things. Obamacare is our foot in the door, but it's up to us to make it better, something worthy of being called a democratic party plan.

74. I bought one of his pizzas several years back, it was horrible. The shop was apparently a poorly

staffed franchise. I didn't purchase a second pizza and don't need to. I found a popular shop where the owner is a nice guy who apparently treats his workers well. If the Papa John's shop vanishes, the owner of the popular shop has sown that he hires more people as he gets more business. I also know the the owner of the popular shop is a democrat.

People, look around your towns and cities. Find alternatives to business like Papa John's. Talk to the owners to get their views on issues like worker health care and pay. Don't do business with the assholes, buy from the people that are on the good side. Even those of you that have a local shop that you like and you find out that shop's owner is an asshole, look for shops that are run by men and women that respect working people.

One thing that yo should not worry about is whether workers at a Papa John's or and asshole McDonald's will find a job, they are likely being paid minimum wage and are being treated like shit. They will find better jobs with the good business owners that expand because of your business.
