Krauthammer calls for GOP 'delicacy' on women's issues

By Steve Benen

Conservative pundit Charles Krauthammer realizes that some Republicans may be tempted to change course in the wake of another electoral defeat, but he counsels his party: "No reinvention when none is needed. Do conservatism but do it better." He said calls for moderation are "nonsense."

The country doesn't need two liberal parties. Yes, Republicans need to weed out candidates who talk like morons about rape. But this doesn't mean the country needs two pro-choice parties either. In fact, more women are pro-life than are pro-choice. The problem here for Republicans is not policy but delicacy -- speaking about culturally sensitive and philosophically complex issues with reflection and prudence.

Now, as far as polls are concerned, the notion that more American women oppose reproductive rights than support them is extremely dubious. Indeed, it's also worth noting that in this week's exit polls, pro-choice voters were a clear majority.

But even putting that aside, I'm fascinated by this notion that Republicans would be fine if only they could present their far-right views on women's health and reproductive rights with "delicacy." In Krauthammer's mind, his party's difficulties -- the gender gap crushed GOP candidates this year -- are really just a matter of spin. Women would be far more inclined to support the right-wing agenda, the argument goes, if only Republicans explained it better.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Krauthammer has no idea what he's talking about.

(emphasis added)

I'm going out on a limb: Lunacy, not "delicacy" is the Republicans' problem.

1. I, for one, wish that the Republicans will always say what they believe on women's issues…

And for women to always hold them accountable.

2. Hold them accountable with a tight grip and a sharp twist.

We know those jutting things screw in, but do they also screw off?

3. Here's a thought....

If you don't have a basic Jr High level of understanding of how the girly bits work....don't make LAWS.

If you don't understand how birth control works....don't make LAWS.

If you don't think that women deserve equal pay for equal work....don't make LAWS.

Why is this so difficult to understand. I think the republicans are still not getting it, and won't for awhile. I seriously thought some of them were understanding most of this....like being pro-life, but understand that rape/incest, life of the mother exception. I really thought that argument was a given....boy was I wrong. Those people were just hidden from view. It sounds like they just want them to go underground again, but they need to realize that these are real concerns for women, and the men who love them.

Kids, I think we are in for the long haul trying to weed these people out.

5. They will never "get it"..

We need pols (of all flavors) who just do not make ANY issue out of "personal choices" that people make...

Stop making so many things "illegal"..Republicans claim to be all for personal responsibility but they just cannot stay out of people's pants/..especially the "ladies' pants".

Concentrate on making people's lives BETTER and making the playing field fairer and all else will fall into place.

6. As a psychiatrist, Krauthammer should know a lot better than to come out with this nonsense.

But I guess he's just so old and creepy and himself "damaged goods" since his accident, that he can't see his own lunacy...

11. That's one thing I'll never believe

> As a psychiatrist, Krauthammer

He can't be a real one. I'll bet anybody he jumped a real shrink in the asylum he was sentenced to, stole his ID, and has been masquerading as a professional since that day.

13. I think it was his accident. He dived into shallow water and suffered a terrible spinal injury, whic

is why he is confined to a wheelchair. I think he is bitter about it and it has ruined his life.

7. I think Charlie is saying this: How can we APPEAR to help

women, but really screw them out of their rights?

12. Delicacy--you mean like a huge heaping serving of shut the f*ck up?

That's about the only delicacy they need. They can keep their outdated opinions to themselves, thank you very much.

15. will somebody give me a BREAK!!!!!

I don't care what the republican Party says or does!!!!I will never ever be a member. this is the Party that sided with a LIAR!!!!This wasn't a normal election. They told him to LIE.He actually came out in the Denver Debates and LIED, LIED, and LIED some more. And then asked us to support the LIAR!!!! They rallied that twisted trick on their shoulders as if he was a PRINCE!!! They even fed into their own LIE!!! They said said just forget all the stuff he said, he's now pivoting for the General election. Pivot my ass!!!! He was LYING!!! And the whole Republican Party was LYING WITH HIM!!!!!I don't care what, who, or when about the Republican Party. They tried to get us to hand over our Country to a tricked out LIAR!!!!And for that, as I keep saying, They need BANISHING to the Wilderness for 40 years!!!!!! Do not give them a compass!!! Let them pick themselves up by their boot straps and find their way to Morality in Humanitarian Compassion. Which if I have the mathematics right will take them additional 10 years!!! 50 years I will probably be in some celestial place, but as long as I have breath I will remind people of their betrayal to our Country!!!!

16. A more delicate, more gentlemanly way of telling women to go to hell

Yeah, better marketing, that's the ticket.

17. And their presidential candidates need to stop supporting people who say that "God wills rape".

Romney had a commercial that said he supported Mourdock.
