Locked threads...

Last edited Wed Dec 7, 2011, 08:13 PM - Edit history (3)

This is new terrirtory for all involved. We're all still learning about the new and improved DU.

Most of the threads that I have locked...have been questions. I've tried to direct du'ers to the right forum.

It's confusing for both us (hosts) and you. Please try and be patient as we figure this out.

I will probably not lock any threads that praise DU--

I have already unlocked one thread that I believe I locked in error.

Please use this thread to address concerns.

Like Skinner said DU is for all of us...we all need to figure this out together.

Many of the questions we have; have been asked and answered here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1240

The Help & Meta forum (the link above) is the best place to ask any questions you may have.

We're going to try and post a message with any thread that is locked. For instance..there was a question about the dungeon location...I posted the link and locked it---and also noted that the Help and Meta forum was for those types of questions.

37. Most threads on 3 include a message that they are in the wrong place

During a trial. So 'you're doing it wrong' is the main message while many are trying to simply look around. It is all locks and notes on what mistakes were made. This is an entertainment. It needs to remain fun.

I say things might as well be wrung out for the next couple of days while the preview lasts rather than letting them slide until the grand opening. There will be a lot of learning going on, and I think that will help smooth the actual launch of DU3.

88. Please consider becoming a host.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I became a host of the soapbox by randomly clicking buttons on the first day of the beta test. This has been a fun and weird and eye opening experience.

The hosts are taking this very seriously. I think on the first day, everybody was testing the various features just to see what happened. This caused a lot of locked threads. The hosts saw this as a problem and began communicating in the hosts forum. Already, the locks have decreased dramatically. Did you know everybody can read the threads in the host forum?

I have been a disgruntled DUer for the past few years and stopped donating. I (used to) have several of my co-hosts on ignore at DU 2. Watching as these former "enemies" are earnestly trying to figure this out and get it right, has completely blown me away.

20. The hosts of any forum or group can post there to communicate with members of that forum or group.

The point is so that people will better understand what is going on in that forum or group.

On DU3, we are trying to keep things transparent, and to keep the lines of communication open between members and the hosts who serve them.

73. The point of the public name posting is transparency: Hosts must block people in the light of day.

In fact, we are thinking of adding the name of the Host that does the blocking, so they are truly responsible for their decision.

FWIW, you can't get blocked from a group if you don't post there. So, if you are opposed to the mission of any group, one option is to simply stay out of that group, and you'll never get blocked.

74. I get that

I use the "discuss" page on DU2 almost exclusively. I thought the "latest threads" page was the same. I wouldn't waste my time in an echo chamber. That was my mistake. I will miss the "discuss" page where every thread posted is actually open to discussion.

I don't see how I had any recourse to reverse my banning without sucking up to someone who already disagrees with me. Maybe some sort of jury system for banning from forums/groups?

I don't know. I will learn the new site and I appreciate all the work it has taken.

Even those who are defined by such snark and vulgarity ought to host with a different tone than 'fuck you'. Just saying. Lots of people are put off. not by the host system, but by specific hosts who come around to snark. A group that would lecture must lead by example. Just a thought. It is naff to do one thing and ask other to do another.

34. Kicking back to top

Just wanted to add that, as a host of this forum, my take is that we are here to facilitate discussion in accordance with the forum guidelines. We are here to serve the membership in that the goal (again, as I see it) is to help DU remain a pleasurable experience for everyone.

The only administrative power we have is the ability to lock threads that don't adhere to these guidelines. I don't think this power should be taken lightly, however, as locking a thread can seem punitive and harsh. I urge anyone who has had a thread locked to appeal to the locking host if you think the thread was locked in error.

Since this preview is a learning experience for all of us (as the OP said so well), my own inclination during this trial is to pretty much leave threads that don't seem to adhere to the guidelines unlocked, while adding a comment in those threads indicating that the thread would have been more suitable for another (named) forum. I think this could have the effect of keeping the lines of communication open between hosts and members, and I think it can provide some valuable insight into why a particular thread was seen as appropriate for the Soapbox.

It's a privilege and a pleasure for me to be a part of this amazing community, and I salute you all!

47. By participating in discussions.

We are members first, hosts second (at least in my opinion). Anyone who positively participates in discussions on DU is 'facilitating" a positive atmosphere on DU.

On edit: fixed typo

85. Uh, but some of the hosts foster negativity and vulgarity

in their participation. That does not fit the job description. In fact, it is the opposite.

39. I think there will be a difference between individual forums on DU3 in what is appropriate to lock

for not matching the forum's description. For example, Latest Breaking News might lock many threads that don't fit the description of that forum. In other forums, like Soapbox, perhaps more leeway would make sense.

I know it's tempting to use the Host's authority to keep a tight rein on suitability of posts, but that may be a mistake. The Soapbox forum appears to be the place for DUers to post their opinions and thoughts about topics. That should probably get a lot more leeway than a more specific forum does.

It is for that reason that I won't be requesting Host status for some time, if ever. I hope that Hosts will maintain a light touch with their job, on all DU forums, and let the Jury system deal with inappropriate material more often than locking by Hosts.

This is my opinion, and it doesn't just apply to this forum.

40. whether or not it goes to the jury or the host is dependent upon what the alerter chooses in the

drop down menu when they alert.

58. Really? So a host can decide to hide/lock a post for more than not being on topic for the forum.

Very interesting.

I think alerts should go to a jury only and hosts should only be allowed to hide threads that don't meet the forum guidelines that are spelled out in the forum purpose.

66. When you alert on a thread's OP, or any post, you'll see a list of reasons for the alert.

Only the one that deals with whether a post meets the forum guidelines is acted on by the forum Hosts. The rest go to other actions, mostly the Jury. So, alerts only go to the Hosts if they're about the forum description information.

I probably won't stick around. Just thought I'd say hi.

Sorry to hear about your son, btw. I still lurk, but obviously don't post, in the DU Lounge.

I found this where that poster requested a tombstone.

Must be a glitch, since she was tombstoned after the January date where they imported the usernames for the last preview.

76. Actually, at first, until everyone is more accustomed to the new DU3,

I would let the questions about where everything is and just general confusion alone. Maybe answer them if we know the answer, and let them know that in the future to go to those forums. Later, once everyone gets more used to the new look and feel, then tighten down on questions about the mechanics of the place and redirect them to the right forum for that. I understand that we are supposed to go to certain forums to ask questions, but this is all so new. I would give a grace period, honestly. That's just my $0.02 worth on it.
