like they are using the "polling" question (to see who one would vote for) as a way around asking straight out if someone is republican or a democrat. If the answer is Obama she probably says thank you very much and moves on to the next person. If the answer is romney she then begins registration.

Obviously, this poor kid doesn't know what's going on. I'm sure she's just trying to pick up extra cash, and is repeating what she was told to say if anyone asked her who she was working for.
When I did that for the Democrats, they told us we HAD to register anyone who wanted to be registered, but we didn't have to make it "easy" for Republicans. Basically, we were told not to ask about party affiliation, BUT if the person mentioned it, and a dem wanted to register, do it on site, hold onto the form and turn it in at the end of the day. If they were Bush voters, just hand them the form, show them how to fill it out, and tell them mail it in. Admittedly, a little marginal, but we were flat out told it was illegal to refuse to register Republicans. Also, if they insisted on doing it right there, then just let them and turn those forms in with the rest. They're just pathetic. |

37. Hold on, there!
|
I'm a Democrat in Colorado. When we do voter registration we most certainly DO NOT do it that way.
For one thing, it's ILLEGAL, not to mention unethical. We bend over backward to treat every applicant with equal consideration, regardless of their party choice. And the forms are numbered, we have to account for them. They are NEVER just handed to the applicant to mail, we are required to turn them in through a specific process. It is NEVER a matter of if they insisted on doing it right there. If they want to use the forms we have with us - forms that do not belong to us but to the state - they MUST complete them while in our presence, we then give them their copy and turn the original over to the state. If they want to register privately, we give them the web address where they can do that. If we deviate from these processes, there are very significant fines and penalties. |

|
I'm going back to 1988 with this...it was the Dukakis vs. Poppy in California. Like I said, we weren't told NOT to register anyone, or to even ask how they wanted to register. You could register by mail in Cali, so we just gave them the forms and told them to send it in. There were no separate carbon copies for us to hold on to, no numbers on the forms, no copies to give them...just a stub at the bottom. The process was the same whether they picked up a form at their local Post Office, or from us in front of a supermarket.
My point was that this young lady was obviously told to only register Republicans, or those supporting Romney in this election. The only question we were told to ask is "Are you registered to vote?" |

Need to get more info. This kid is probably not being paid by the County Clerk's office, only turning in completed registration forms and has been sent to the site by Repubs. What we do as Dems is get past voting information on each person if we are going to the homes and help them to register or to change their registration. I do not know that you have to register them at a public site, you may give them information and have them register online. If they have voted Dem before we ask them how they intend to vote and answer questions; they will be contacted later by another Dem. But we try hard not to get into any kind of argument and refer them to the Colorado voter site and the Blue Book for more help. And having worked for the League of Women Voters for many years I try to remember that what we really want is for all Americans (especially those who have not voted before) to learn as much as possible about the candidates and issues and then vote.

|
Last edited Sun Sep 23, 2012, 07:51 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2) I would say the same thing if it was a Dem. trying to register only Democrats in the same way.
As for Breitbart and ACORN, that was a set-up and then the pieces of it were taken out of context to make it into something it was not. (On the other hand, if ACORN had really been trying to help sexually traffic Salvadoran teens, I would be cheering Breitbart at the top of my lungs). Back to the Honey Bunch case. I'm guessing the woman who recorded this heard from someone else what was happening and came up prepared with the "tape rolling". I would have done the EXACT SAME THING ABSOLUTELY WITH NO QUALMS WHATSOEVER IN THE LEAST. { v/ } Upload to Facebook. On Edit - I'm starting to wonder if its illegal or not (scary that this would be legal - well, if the county clerk was behind this, obviously it would be illegal, but I don't think that's likely to be the case) - See Jane Eyre's posting (#45). Would someone knowledgable really post a job on Craigslist to "identify conservative and Republican voters and ask them to register"? Now I'm feeling kind of foolish about all my histrionics, maybe its just politics as usual and I'm just getting old and my old-fashioned values are getting old too. Sigh. (I can't find an emoticon that expresses my apologies for being so damn dumb and naive -- well this comes close See also sister thread on the same tape for more comments -- http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021403098 |

|
And most people though maybe he was lying. I'm starting to think maybe he wasn't, that it was the Republicans that are playing politics with voter registration.
Here it is verbatim: "Interesting think happened to me today, I went to <name of grocery store redacted> today (a grocery store) and there was and individual outside trying to register voters. I am already registered to vote so I decided to mess with the guy as I approached. I told him I could not vote because I was on a student visa from Canada so I could not register. The guy told me that I could register because he could work it to where I could vote as long as I voted for Obama in the upcoming elections. I was amazed that someone would be so bold. He told me all I needed was the current address I was living at and he could get me registered. This makes me wonder what is really going on in this election." http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=104324 |

Someone did that to me in front of the drugstore the other day in Charlotte, NC..... Asked who I was voting for and when I said Obama, walked away. If I had been thinking AT ALL I would have said Romney just to see what they did next. |
