Romney would privatize amtrak

Warning to Amtrak from Mitt Romney and Republicans: You're on your own.

The platform Republicans adopted at their convention included a call for full privatization and an end to subsidies for the nation's passenger rail operator, which gobbled up almost $1.5 billion in federal funds last year.

"It is long past time for the federal government to get out of the way and allow private ventures to provide passenger service," the platform said, arguing that taxpayers dole out almost $50 for every Amtrak ticket....

On Monday, Amtrak announced it had set monthly ridership records in each of the past 11 months, with expectations of a 12th in September.

3. Good!

I wanna pay 100 bucks to take the train to SF! MORE even! While you are at it Mitt be sure to take away the unions too that work on the railroad. Nothing would give me any warmer feeling than knowing that non union workers, working for low wages are building our infrastructure and transporting people all over hell.

What could possibly go wrong?

Seventy per cent of people want to see Britainís railways renationalised, according to a new survey.

Up in my neck of the woods the Ontario Prime Minister is cancelling our Ontario Northland railway...Last train is the 27th this month...People are devastated.

8. Has been attempted many times,

and fails due to interest by congressmembers in keeping service alive in their districts. For this one, 'all politics is local.'

7. These fuckers (rethugs) are so, so backward.

But by all means, Robme, let your buddies fleece the public. That's what y'all are best at.

Whenever I hear the word privatize, I know it's time to bend over and assume the position.

9. Amtrak will go away

Which is probably a good thing. A few years ago i read that they actually lost $100 per passenger. Can't privatize a loser.

12. Amtrak

isn't meant to make money. It is meant to help travelers and by doing so helps businesses across the nation. This is the same for our roads. They do not make money, they are there to facilitate travel and they also help spur and sustain business. There is no corruption in Amtrak so I would really like to know what the excuse to privatize would be. Also, since the government does need to subsidize the system, I highly doubt any private entity would even want to take it on. If ticket prices rose too much, people would just fly. Romney is just speaking out his ass to his idiot base.

14. I love Amtrak

I have taken many Amtrak adventures. The best is when my former wife and I took an economy sleeper coast to coast from LA to NY. It was lovely having our own small, but very comfortable, compartment. Three meals were included with the ticket. The food was absolutely wonderful. Also included was fresh brewed coffee and Danish every morning. I still went to breakfast in the diner.

Two-plus days from LA to Chicago, basically following old Route 66. A major stop in Albequerque, NM gave us a chance to get off and sample the wonderful and unique New Mexican cuisine. Before Albequerque a tour guide joined the train as it wound its way through native American lands. She gave a delightful and riveting lecture to a packed observation car as we passed stunning landscapes, a real highlight of the trip.

We met people, our fellow Pullman car mates, universally retirees. When you are seated in the dining car you are seated with others at your table, different people at every meal. The service was great; the food exquisite; the ride smooth and quiet. Best yet, we could board without taking off our shoes, and we had room to stretch out comfortably. (This is true also in coach.)

I would rather take Amtrak than fly any day. I like flying, but I despise traveling by air. It sucks! Amtrak doesn't suck.

17. My son just came home from Jersey on Amtrak. He drives up each summer then uses Amtrak to come

back home to Florida (gets off in Sanford, boards I think in N. Virginia). He's still talking about the short ribs he had for dinner, the great blonde "event planner" he had a nice chat with and the great guy who has his coffee ready when he rises before anyone else. He saves mileage on his car and says he would advertise for Amtrak for free. He's kind of a tight-wad so that is HUGE!!!

15. Amtrak needs *more* funding, and an increased advertizing budget.

Counter their bullshit with the opposite of what they propose.
