Public Schools Denounced at Tea Party Rally in Tampa, Blamed for Election of Barack Obama

Conservative talk show host Neal Boortz, speaking at yesterday’s Unity Rally 2012 in Tampa ahead of the Republican National Convention, denounced public schools as “government schools” that are “forced upon us.” Boortz blamed “100 years of government education” for bringing America “to the point that a man like Barack Obama could be sworn in as president of the United States.”

Boortz directed the crowd to change the way they speak about public schools – calling them “government schools” instead. He also called on the audience to “preach school choice,” by which meant efforts to defund public schools and provide taxpayer dollars for religious and private schools and homeschooling.

A number of public officials spoke at the rally, including Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and Reps. Jason Chaffetz and Michele Bachmann. Kleefisch and Chaffetz both followed Boortz but neither stood up for public schools. One has to wonder if they, like Boortz, also hate public education:

The Tea Party's hatred of the social contract continues, this just majority white Christians, etc country they think it should bethen to hell to with everyone else.

1. Neal Boortz is one of the vilest racist radio hatemongers ever. The wingnuts will have orgasms.

Then go to Limbaugh's Fortress of Gluttony and get stuffed. Buncha swine.

2. What an asshole.

With the new Mars mission, it's obvious that we should be investing MORE in public education. We need to get back into the mindset that ANY kid can work for NASA, not just the rich or religious.

5. Man, you'd have everyone demanding funds for homeschooling.

I'm not putting down homeschooling, as that is a personal choice. BUT, I do argue that tax money shouldn't go to support it. You would have no control, just as you would have little or no control of contract schools. Look at how many have cheated on tests or spent the money on items other than for contract school operation.

They are bound and determined to end public education.

7. A bad theory among many

The fact that people who went to public school voted for Obama does not imply that the experiences at public school caused the specific voting behavior.

You can try all you like to train people not to think, but sooner or later many will experiment with independent thought and decide they like it. It is hard to ban independent thought as no illicit substance is involved.

I tried to convince my kids to be biologists. I taught them biology, exposed them to it, my boy could correctly name many common plants in latinized scientific names by first grade, he is now a materials scientist. My daughter was good at biology too but never fell in love with it and is now a fine artist. Schools can only do so much, parents can only do so much, sooner or later kids will be what they are to be regardless.

It is like the TP to walk about with alot of bad ideas, poorly supported by evidence they can easily observe in their everyday lives. Somehow they assume that while it does not work for them directly, it would work for other people they do not know.

8. And sadly, teachers and public education isn't getting much help from the other side of the aisle,

Between RTTT, merit based pay based on more and more standardized tests, and whatever other ideas the Duncan/Obama team can come up with, teachers and public education are pretty much being left out there all on their own.

11. So is Boortz saying that educated people won't vote Repug?

Sounds about right to me.

12. k&r

Preaching school choice has been a right-wing meme for decades. Glad to see people speaking out the truth about it, and who advocates for it.

13. In my opinion, free public education made the US a great nation.

I went to public schools from kindergarten through Ph.D. I feel I received an excellent education at every level. We do away with good public schools at our peril.
