About Me

Still an ardent Irish-American Catholic damnYankee Yellow Dog Democrat socialist after all these years. (cue Simon music) Army brat and wife for many years, now have been on the loose far longer than I was married. After my two red chows died, I took in a mini-beagle cross that I named Molly Maguire, thinking she might need a good Irish name like my original real one. Later she got a baby sister, a smooth-coat JRT I named Brigid after the greatest of the ancient Celtic goddesses. My great-grandfather and his son fought for Michael Collins and barely made it out of Ireland one step ahead of John Bull. They slipped over to Wales for new identities and then forward to the States for a fresh start. That makes me second generation of illegal but certainly justified immigrants. There are precious few people to whose defense I fly immediately, but the list includes Hillary Clinton, President Barack Obama even when I disagree with him - it happens! - and living Irish patriots Gerry Adams and Martin \\\'Mind Your Kneecaps\\\' McGuiness. I pray earnestly for a united and free Ireland rescued from all official British occupation, with every square inch of alleged \\\'ancestral lands\\\' now held immorally and illegally by the invaders returned to the rightful owners. Irish-only rule for Ireland. No foreign masters anymore! I find it passing strange when Brits chide ME about \'interfering\' in Irish politics!

That's what most of us would do; but

Maybe she still wouldn't be allowed out of the country. She may also have the (mistaken) notion that she'll go to hell if she recants.

Her life afterward - if she recanted - could be worse in her eyes than death. They'd hardly treat her with kindness and courtesy!

I've been absorbed in other matters, but it looks as if I need to return to my former practice of

daily reading of all BOG posts. Just to keep some of the stray trolls in check. Turn away for a second and all hell can break loose. I'm not an admin and don't wish to be, but I should at least kinda keep an eye on the front gate for them. They're very good to respond when notified. Farrrr better than relying on the jury system! Besides, I don't think outsiders have any business adjudicating in our own forum, especially since so many of them are such Obama haters I don't know why DU puts up with them. They sound more like Rush and Beck than any kind of actual Democrat.

Absolutely MUST be read. Repeatedly.

I understood and appreciated the first article I read about the article (as well as laughed/gagged at the original) but I can't seem to get enough of it. Righteous Rant indeed. Congratulations and thank you.

Although I've read comments elsewhere to the effect that the poor are too exhausted and dispirited to EVER rise up, sometimes I suspect that's a certain group whistling past the graveyard. History suggests otherwise. There are many more of us than there are of them, and eventually we'll reach the tipping point, superior weapons be damned. An economist named Cay, I think (forgive me, I'm still on my first cup of coffee) has been saying it will be the bloodiest thing the world has ever seen. I'm quite sure he's right.

I've seen a couple of memorable, provocative signs this year: "The French Aristocracy Never Saw It Coming Either" and "Pretty Soon the Poor Will Have Nothing Left to Eat But the Rich".

Not that I'm any great admirer of Buffet, but I'll grant him this much; at least he understands fat cows give more milk. To put things in agrarian terms, the rich are eating their seed corn.

No, I haven't actually tried the fingernail polish method on old costume jewelry myself as yet.

But I should've specified I meant REAL JUNK that's no longer fit to wear unless you fix it up somehow. Or maybe you see something in a thrift shop or yard sale and like the shape but not necessarily the condition. I wouldn't dream of touching good old costume jewelry. Sometimes you can make an interesting wall display with it also.

Since I was a set decorator for awhile, I still like to do that sort of thing; one of my bedrooms is designed around a children's theme as a flimsy excuse to display my dolls and stuffed animals. Sometimes I deck the latter out in pretty wild jewelry and/or outfits. No telling what goes on upstairs when I'm away! One 4' tall multi-colored chenille rabbit wears a viking helmet with a leather shield and toy plastic sword. Etc. Miss Piggy outdresses them all - she's almost hidden under the jewelry and crown and wand, etc.

Somebody gave me a better idea, though. Apparently there's a good chance that the motor can be

swapped out with a different but compatible kind. I didn't know they could ever be interchanged. So I'll try that route first.

What did you think about redoing old costume jewelry with nail polish? I was intrigued.

Wow. Thanks. THAT never would've occurred to me, since I'm not well enough versed in

anything to do with motors. I'll put my solution on the back burner for emergency only and put yours at the head of the line. I had no earthly idea that a different motor could be substituted. If I can ever get him over to the house, the guy that does such work for me is especially handy with electrical motors. He's going to check my 4-wheel adult scooter someday to see if it might be morphed into a small riding lawnmower for me too. I have a quarter acre, but it's rather intricately landscaped now after 8 years of intense effort, so I still need something small and slow. And CHEAP! I got the scooter after a bad wreck when I could barely walk for several years. Now I'm pretty much recovered and don't need it for the original purpose.

Cheap Easy Attic Fan and one other unrelated idea

I've been told by several locals that the only reason they passed on my 100-yr-old house is because of the steep narrow stairs. The second floor 'hallway' looks more like a cattle chute. It took almost a year of searching to find a whole house attic fan narrow enough to fit in the ceiling there. I don't mind because all the rooms are 15' square except the master bath (old bedroom) which only spans 15x12.

Anyway! After 8 years of heavy use, the attic fan has spun its last at last and they don't make that size anymore. No one wants to fix the motor if indeed that could even be done.

So I scratched my hard head until I came up with an alternate solution. Remove the louvers in the ceiling, take out the fan entirely, and put the biggest strongest box fan up there that I can find. Place it on its back (with maybe a few widely spaced furring strips for support) so the air will be drawn up into the attic. Run an extension cord down to the nearest wall outlet, turn on the fan, and let 'er rip.

No problem because I live alone, guests never want to climb the stairs anyway, and there are no little kids to worry about. True, it won't look great but except for bath time I don't go upstairs too often anyway in the heat of summer. And when I do, that wonderful rush of upward air would make ugly looks forgivable anyway.

................................................................................

This last tidbit doesn't speak to home improvement at all unless you decorate with antique or just old costume jewelry, and I can't claim credit for the idea; but here 'tis anyway. Refurbish old costume jewelry with nail polish!

Incredible OP. Thank you.

Wiser heads than mine (not always too hard to find) have suggested that everyone has some degree of mental defect, the only difference being severity. I try to remember that when I get up on my high horse about someone, even if it can only happen after a cooling off period.

One of my dearest friends suffers from depression and schizophrenia. Her mother, now deceased, used to introduce her as her 'evil daughter', although she's done more to earn my respect and affection than most other people in the world. Her illness is severe enough that she sees terrifying images of dangerous animals - snakes curling around someone's head, etc. A tiger prowling the room. But she takes her meds and has worked out a pretty good method of handling the images. If the person on whose head SHE sees a snake, for instance, doesn't seem disturbed by it then she figures it's just her imagination and tries her best to ignore it.

But it must be very trying for her, and I so admire her brave efforts at coping that I tell her now and then of my high regard. Like I said, she's also a very sweet person and really nicer to others than I am.

Thank you again for such an important and illuminating thread.
