The people of Paris have been urged to “pray for hope, not hate” at a ceremony at Notre Dame Cathedral to mourn the 132 people killed and hundreds injured in Friday’s terror attacks.
During an 80-minute service inside the French landmark, Cardinal Andre XXIII called on the country not to “provoke aggression” but to remember the dead in the wake of the “barbaric” attack on the country.
He said: “We pray for hope, not hate. “The main purpose of us meeting is to pray for the dead, their relatives, the wounded, our country.”
Cathedral bells
The service began after the famous cathedral bells rang out over the Seine and across the centre of Paris, marking the memory of the dead.
Crowds had gathered behind heavily controlled barriers around Place Jean Paul II square throughout the afternoon, eager to be among those permitted onto the pews inside.

Oblivious to the drama outside, inside the cathedral a handful of people took pictures and videos on their camera phones during the service, which featured hymns, prayers, an organist and burning incense.
Members of the congregation were asked to shake hands with those around them before Cardinal Andre closed the service, shortly after 7.50pm local time (6.50pm Irish time).

Anti-Muslim demonstrations have broken out in France

CROWDS of extreme right-wing protesters have disturbed a solidarity march in France as news breaks that at least one of the terrorists responsible for the slaughters in Paris was a Syrian refugee.
A peaceful demonstration taking place in the centre of Lille, northern France, was interrupted by right-wingers appearing to belong to the Front National.
The unrest came as Front National leader Marine Le Pen declared French people “are no longer safe” and called for France to take back control of its borders.
Many people have taken to the streets across France today to show their solidarity with Paris despite the French government banning demonstrations from taking place for security reasons.
Banners of peaceful protesters read: “We are not afraid”, “Pray for Paris” and “Je suis Paris” in homage to the terrorist attacks on Charlie Hebdo in January.
Mourning Parisians have laid flowers and candles at the six locations where the gruesome attacks took place.

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al Assad condemned Friday's attacks in Paris and said that such acts of terror were similar to what his people had faced in years of violent civil war.
"What France suffered from savage terror is what the Syrian people have been enduring for over five years," the Syrian President was quoted as saying on state media and Lebanese TV station al Mayadeen.

Le Parisien: Au moins sept attaques ont touché Paris vendredi soir

Des attaques simultanées ont été menées dans au moins six endroits différents à Paris et sa banlieue.
Au moins sept attaques terroristes à Paris et dans le secteur du Stade de France ont fait ce vendredi soir au moins 43 morts et une prise d'otages a eu lieu dans la salle de concert du Bataclan où de très nombreux spectateurs ont été tués.
Stade de France. Selon un tout premier bilan, cinq personnes ont été tuées dans des explosions dans le secteur du Stade de France, où se déroulait le match amical de football France-Allemagne auquel assistait le président François Hollande qui a été évacué avant la fin du match. Les secours dénombrent également 11 blessés en «urgence absolue» et 39 blessés en urgence relative. Au moins l'une des explosions meurtrières près du Stade de France a été causée par un kamikaze qui est lui-même décédé. «Un homme s'est fait sauter avec une ceinture explosive» rue Jules Rimet à Saint-Denis, a dit une des sources à l'AFP. L'autre explosion a eu lieu près du restaurant McDonald's de la Plaine-Saint-Denis, une autre commune riveraine du stade.
Dans la capitale. Dans Paris, la préfecture de police dénombre «au moins trois fusillades, peut-être quatre dans le secteur du Bataclan (XIe arrondissement) et rue de Charonne (XIe arrondissement)». «Des dizaines de personnes» ont été massacrées par des terroristes au Bataclan où une prise d'otages a eu lieu quelques heures. Des assaillants ont crié «c'est pour la Syrie» et ont tiré dans la «fosse» au pied de la scène, selon BFM TV. Le Raid, unité de d'élite de la police, était sur place peu avant 23h30. La maire de Paris, Anne Hidalgo, était également sur les lieux. Vers 00h30, la police a lancé l'assaut sur le Bataclan. A 00h48, BFM TV indiquait que l'opération était terminée et que les policiers d'élite de la BRI avaient tué deux terroristes. Les hommes de la BRI ont découvert à l'intérieur une «véritable scène de carnage».
«Avec ma mère on a réussi à s'enfuir du Bataclan (...), on a évité les coups de feu, il y avait plein de gens partout par terre», a raconté un jeune homme, prénommé Louis sur France Info. «Des mecs sont arrivés, ils ont commencé à tirer au niveau de l'entrée», a-t-il poursuivi. «Ils ont tiré en plein dans la foule en criant Allah Akbar, avec des fusils à pompe je crois. Je les entendais charger, le concert s'est arrêté, tout le monde s'est couché à terre, ils continuaient à tirer sur les gens, putain c'est un enfer», a-t-il enchaîné, la voix brisée par les sanglots. «J'ai pris ma mère, on s'est couché au sol, quelqu'un a dit ils sont partis, on s'est enfui par une issue de secours, il y avait encore des coups de feu quand on est partis, on a enjambé des corps, c'est un cauchemar», a ajouté le témoin, qui dit n'avoir vu des assaillants que «des silhouettes quand ils ont commencé à tirer les premiers coups de feu».
Le bilan de ces attaques manifestement «simultanées» reste provisoire. De nombreuses équipes de secours ont été déployées et des périmètres de sécurité mis en place. Le bilan «devrait être beaucoup plus lourd», selon une source proche du dossier.

Etat d'urgence décrété
Une cellule de crise a d'abord été mise en place au ministère de l'Intérieur autour du président Hollande, du Premier ministre Manuel Valls et du ministre de l'Intérieur Bernard Cazeneuve immédiatement après les attaques. Ensuite, le président de la République, François Hollande, a pris la parole pour annoncer qu'il décidait de décréter l'Etat d'urgence et de fermer toutes les frontières.
«Deux décisions seront prises : l'état d'urgence sera décrété, ce qui veut dire que certains lieux seront fermés, la circulation pourra être interdite et il y aura également des perquisitions qui pourront être décidées dans toute l'Ile-de-France», a assuré François Hollande dans une allocution télévisée de trois minutes depuis l'Elysée. «L'état d'urgence sera proclamé sur l'ensemble du territoire», a-t-il précisé.
«La seconde décision que j'ai prise, c'est la fermeture des frontières, nous devons nous assurer que personne ne pourra rentrer pour commettre quelque acte que ce soit. Et en même temps que ceux qui auraient pu commettre les crimes qui sont hélas constatés puissent également être appréhendés, s'ils devaient sortir du territoire», a expliqué François Hollande.
«Nous avons, sur ma décision, mobilisé toutes les forces possibles pour qu'il puisse y avoir la neutralisation des terroristes et la mise en sécurité de tous les quartiers qui peuvent être concernés» a-t-il dit. «J'ai également demandé qu'il y ait des renforts militaires, ils sont en ce moment sur l'agglomération parisienne pour être sûrs qu'aucune attaque ne puisse de nouveau avoir lieu», a-t-il ajouté.
A minuit, un conseil des ministres exceptionnel a débuté à l'Elysée.
Le parquet antiterroriste se saisit de l'enquête.
A l'étranger, du Kremlin à la Maison Blanche, en passant par Berlin, Londres et Rome, les chefs d'Etat et de gouvernement ont tous dénoncé ce soir l'horreur qui a frappé Paris et offert leur coopération.
Des lignes de Métro et de bus coupées. La police recommande désormais aux parisiens d'éviter de sortir sauf nécessité absolue. Plusieurs lignes du métro parisien ont été coupées : les lignes 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, qui passent par les Xe et XIe arrondissements où ont eu lieu certains attentats, sont concernées. La circulation des autobus qui traversent ces quartiers est également interrompue.
Mobilisation maximale dans les hôpitaux. Les hôpitaux de Paris ont déclenché le «Plan blanc» d'urgence et de crise pour prendre en charge les nombreux blessés. «Le plan blanc a été déclenché à l'AP-HP depuis 22h30. Tous les services d'urgence et les services de Samu sont sur le pont», a indiqué un porte-parole de l'Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris.

France's top book prize goes to tale of opium-fuelled dream

PARIS - A book about a night of opium-fuelled cross-cultural dreaming won France's most prestigious -- and lucrative -- literary prize Tuesday in a contest dominated by the West's fraught relationship with Islam.
Mathias Enard took the Goncourt prize with "Boussole" ("Compass"
, a poetic eulogy to the long history of cultural exchanges between East and West that flies in the face of cliches about the so-called clash of civilisations.
The novel runs the course of a night of opium-induced ruminations, and in the spirit of his high-flown odyssey, its burly author told a scrum of reporters that Lebanon's patron saint and the ghost of Algeria's most revered Islamic thinker may have had a hand in his victory.
"I have just come back from Algiers and Beirut," said Enard, 43, a scholar of both Arabic and Persian. "Maybe it was the luck that Sheikh Abderrahmane (a historian who died in 2010) and Saint George of Beirut brought me...
"I am extraordinarily happy," he added, after fighting his way into the Paris restaurant where the prize was decided over lunch by the Goncourt's jury, who are all elected for life.
The novel has already won the booksellers' prize -- the Nancy-Le Point -- for its nimbly erudite voyage from the Islamic enlightenment of the Middle Ages to present day Islamic State executioners in war-torn Syria.
Although Enard had been the clear critics' favourite, the daring and density of his writing -- the opening sentence lasts a page -- put others off.
The head of the jury, Bernard Pivot said after the award: "You have to be audacious to write a book like this, and you also have to be audacious to read it."
But the Barcelona-based Enard insisted his book was "very accessible... I write very simply. All you have to do is open the book to realise that it not as hard to read as some say."
An academic who has lived in Tehran, Berlin and Beirut, where his breakthrough novel "Zone" (2008) is set, Enard also won France's second most lucrative prize, the youth Goncourt, in 2010.
