Why Are So Many People Flagging Atheist Mom’s CNN iReport Article As ‘Inappropriate?’

from Mediaite: link

With close to 740,000 views and 10,000 comments, a CNN iReport article titled “Why I Raise My Children Without God” (link) is one of the site’s most popular features. But now CNN has been forced to defend the article from users who won’t stop flagging it as “inappropriate.”

In the story, a blogger identified only as TXBlue08, who also blogs at Kids Without Religion, discusses why she chose to raise her two children without God. In the opening section, she explains:

“I thought it was only right to be honest with my children. I am a non-believer, and for years I’ve been on the fringe in my community. As a blogger, though, I’ve found that there are many other parents out there like me. We are creating the next generation of kids, and there is a wave of young agnostics, atheists, free thinkers and humanists rising up through the ranks who will, hopefully, lower our nation’s religious fever.”

Those sentiments and the list of reasons for her decision that follow, including “God is not logical” and “God does not protect the innocent” have created so much controversy on the site that CNN recently updated it with the following note:

“CNN hasn’t flagged this iReport as inappropriate, but some community members have. This is a divisive topic, however it does not violate our Community Guidelines, so we ask people to please stop flagging it. We will continue to review the story as often as possible.”

Kentucky Minister Arrested After Trying To Marry His Same-Sex Partner

Kentucky Minister Arrested After Trying To Marry His Same-Sex Partner

A Kentucky Baptist minister protested on behalf of same-sex marriage by refusing to leave the county clerk’s office until he and his partner received a marriage license. Rev. Maurice “Bojangles” Blanchard and Dominique James walked in — already knowing they would be refused — and were later arrested when the office closed. Blanchard said the sit-in showed they would not be “silent accomplices to our own discrimination.”

In an interview with the Louisville Courier-Journal, Blanchard pointed out that religious leaders stand behind his right to marriage:

We’re here today to give nonviolence witness and let folks know that even people of faith, most definitely people of faith are going to stand up to and say this is wrong We anticipate being denied and upon that denial we are going to sit down and not be moved and not leave as a sign of a method of nonviolent resistance. Because we feel if we do not resist we’re silent accomplices to our own discrimination.

Pro-LGBT Episcopal Priest Chosen To Deliver Benediction At Obama Inauguration

link

A pro-LGBT Episcopal priest has just been chosen to deliver the benediction at President Barack Obama‘s second inauguration, after another priest withdrew when his extremely anti-gay sermon was discovered. Reverend Dr. Luis León, fourteenth Rector of St. John’s Church in Washington, D.C., will replace Rev. Louie Giglio of Atlanta, Georgia. Reverend León delivered the invocation at President George W. Bush‘s 2005 inauguration, and both the Bush family and the Obama family have attended his church.

“Leon’s own parish is known for welcoming openly gay members,” The Huffington Post reports:

The church, which has openly gay, non-celibate priests and has had a gay bishop, announced this summer that it would bless same-sex partnerships and ordain transgender priests. This month, the Washington National Cathedral, an Episcopal church, announced that it would also begin same-sex marriage ceremonies.

In this 2009 video, Reverend Dr. Luis León speaks in support of marriage equality, and says “diversity may be the hardest thing to live with, but it is also the most dangerous to live without.”

“I’ll be doing it,” said Leon, who declined to elaborate until the news was officially announced. A source close to the Presidential Inaugural Committee, speaking on background because the news had not been announced, confirmed the selection of Leon to The Huffington Post. The source said the official announcement would be made in coming days. The selection was first reported by CNN.

Reverend Dr. Luis León more closely represents the Obama administration’s policies, as the Presidential Inaugural Committee had promised when it announced Pastor Giglio removed his name from consideration.

“Leon began his spiritual journey when he was baptized into the Episcopal Church in Guantanamo, Cuba,” Huffington Post added. “In 1961, when he was 12 years old, he came to the U.S. on the “Operation Peter Pan” flights out of Cuba, joining thousands of children whose parents feared for their future in Cuba. When he arrived in America he was supported by the Episcopal Church in Miami.”

Biden: Obama Might Use Executive Order to Deal With Guns

http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/biden-obama-might-use-executive-order-deal-guns_694984.html

Vice President Joe Biden revealed that President Barack Obama might use an executive order to deal with guns.

"The president is going to act," said Biden, giving some comments to the press before a meeting with victims of gun violence. "There are executives orders, there's executive action that can be taken. We haven't decided what that is yet. But we're compiling it all with the help of the attorney general and the rest of the cabinet members as well as legislative action that we believe is required."

Biden said that this is a moral issue and that "it's critically important that we act."

Biden talked also about taking responsible action. "As the president said, if you're actions result in only saving one life, they're worth taking. But I'm convinced we can affect the well-being of millions of americans and take thousands of people out of harm's way if we act responsibly."

Biden, as he himself noted, helped write the Brady bill.

Eric Holder was scheduled to be at the meeting that's currently take place at the White House.

BREAKING NEWS: House votes for deal to avoid fiscal cliff 257 representatives in favor, 167 against

http://www.pal-item.com/article/20130101/UPDATES/130101009

WASHINGTON (AP) — Weary lawmakers in the House pushed at last toward a final congressional vote on legislation to avoid a national “fiscal cliff” of middle class tax increases and spending cuts, a New Year’s Night culmination of a struggle that tested divided government to the limit.

Passage sends the measure to President Barack Obama for his signature and seal a political triumph less than two months after he won re-election while calling for higher taxes on the wealthy. The late-night House vote took place less than 24 hours after Senate action spilled over from New Year’s Eve into the pre-dawn hours of 2013.

In addition to neutralizing middle class tax increases and spending cuts taking effect with the new year, the legislation raises tax rates on incomes over $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for couples. That was higher than the thresholds of $200,000 and $250,000 that Obama campaigned for. But remarkably, in a party that swore off tax increases two decades ago, dozens of Republicans supported the bill at both ends of the Capitol.

Supporters of the bill in both parties expressed regret that the bill was narrowly drawn, and fell far short of a sweeping plan that combined tax changes and spending cuts to reduce federal deficits. That proved to be a step too far in the two months since Obama called congressional leaders to the White House for a post-election stab at compromise.

Majority Republicans did their best to minimize the bill’s tax increases, just as they abandoned their demand from earlier in the day to add spending cuts to the package.

“By making Republican tax cuts permanent, we are one step closer to comprehensive tax reform that will help strengthen our economy and create more and higher paychecks for American workers,” said Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.

Clinton's clot located between brain and skull, doctors say

Source: CNN

(CNN) –

Hillary Clinton's doctors said Monday that the secretary of state's blood clot is located "between the brain and the skull behind the right ear."

Clinton remained hospitalized Monday at New York Presbyterian Hospital for a clot that was discovered during a follow-up exam related to a concussion she suffered this month, her spokesman said.

Read the full statement from her doctors:

"In the course of a routine follow-up MRI on Sunday, the scan revealed that a right transverse sinus venous thrombosis had formed. This is a clot in the vein that is situated in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. It did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage. To help dissolve this clot, her medical team began treating the Secretary with blood thinners. She will be released once the medication dose has been established. In all other aspects of her recovery, the Secretary is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery. She is in good spirits, engaging with her doctors, her family, and her staff."

- Dr. Lisa Bardack, Mt. Kisco Medical Group, and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi, George Washington University
