An Update on Our Fight For Voting Rights

The Brennan Center for Justice issued an August 31st report entitled 2012 Summary of Voting Law Changes states “at least 180 restrictive bills introduced since the beginning of 2011 in 41 states” (shortly after Tea Party Republicans took control in the 2010 Midterm Elections). The Brennan Center also reported that “14 laws and executive actions are currently in effect in 10 states” but…

…thanks to the steadfast efforts of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder - despite continuous battering from the congressional GOP - along with the backbreaking efforts of voting rights organizations and individual citizens who wrote letters, made phone calls, forwarded emails, social networked, or pounded the pavement to insure that every single eligible American has the right to vote, WE are making progress:

TEXAS: A federal court “rejected a Texas voter identification law on Thursday. The three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court decided that the law would unduly prevent minorities from being able to vote.” (msmagazine.com)

OHIO: A U.S. District Judge handed down a decision that “restored early voting in Ohio.” Now individuals may vote in person three days before November 6th. (politic365.com)

FLORIDA: A federal judge “blocked Republican Governor Rick Scott’s efforts to “impose harsh new restrictions on third-party voter registration groups” by first, blocking the law in late May and permanently killing its provisions this week. (thinkprogress.org)

WISCONSIN: A state circuit court judge “blocked a voter ID law” signed by Republican Governor Scott Walker stating in his ruling that “the law addressed a problem that was “very limited, if indeed it exist” and “would create a needless and significant impairment of the right to vote” (thinkprogress.org. )

Here's the deal...

There are still a number of states with some form of voter suppression tactics (including Florida's 10 page ballot!?!?). We'll just have to roll up our sleeves and take that extra step to make sure our voting records are current and, in some instances, prepare for long lines at the polls. No matter what – don’t get discouraged because.…

No amount of voter suppression can top record-breaking turnout!

Romney: The Presumptuous Jet Setter-In-Chief

Did you get to see Romney’s two presidential-looking campaign jets (one for Romney, one for Ryan) awaiting their departure from Florida the day after the GOP Convention? Okay Mr. Romney - We get it. You’re rich and your Super Pac campaign contributors are rolling in the millions like a waterfall, but do you have to rub it in?

When Romney entered the GOP Convention Hall for his acceptance speech, he walked through a rope-line shaking hands, all huggy and kissy as if he was, already, the President entering the Halls of Congress for a State of the Union Address. When he, finally, got on stage Romney even introduced himself like the Sergeant of Arms introduces a President at a State of the Union Address!

I know it’s all in the optics – the jets, the rope-line, the introduction – trying to make it look like you’ve won. I, also, suspect that Romney is placing all his bets on the hopes that 1) GOP voter suppression will propel him to the presidency, and 2) Super Pac(ed) millions will flood the airways with the same types of vicious, fabrication ads and robocalls that picked off his GOP opponents one by one in the GOP primaries, but I have one word of caution for the presumptuous Jet Setter- in –Chief…

You have to get elected President before you, actually, get to be a President!

FYI
Do your part to make sure November 6th is a fair election. Too many individuals of all races, shades and creeds were water-hosed, beaten, jailed and killed for us to exercise that right.

Where are the jobs?

The jobs have been sitting on Boehner’s desk since September, 2011 when President Obama submitted the American Jobs Act to Congress. Neither Boehner nor his Tea Partied Republican counterparts in the US Senate will allow the Act to come to the floor of the House or the Senate for a vote!

So, let’s join our Tea Partied Republican congressional members - including Romney's VP pick, Paul Ryan - while they’re on vacation. Each and every day, transmit emails, letters and telephone calls to their state and congressional offices with the message…

The Last Supper - Akin, Romney, Ryan, GOP Eating Off the Same Plate!

A recent Associated Press article entitled Congressman: Pregnancy from Tape “Rare” reports that Tea Partied Congressman Todd Akin stated that it is “really rare” for women to become pregnant when they are raped…If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down”!?!?!?

His statement created an uproar among Tea Partied Republican presidential/vice presidential candidates, congressmen, Super Pac(ers), FOXifiers and pundits clamoring for Akin to bow out of the Missouri US Senate race. The question is why?

Romney supported anti-abortion pro-lifer, John Willke and campaigns on eliminating Planned Parenthood which would, in turn, eliminate middle class and poor women's preventive health care accessibility including cancer screenings, family life education, and education services to prevent teen pregnancy. (qctimes.com and planned parenthood.com)

Romney's VP pick Paul Ryan “teamed up with Akin in the House to sponsor harsh anti-abortion bills” (ny times.com)

The Republican Party “establishment” approved “strict anti-abortion” language in their Party Platform. (nytimes.com)

So, why are Romney, Ryan, other GOP Tea Partiers and Super Pac(ers) complaining about Akin’s statements when they are all on the same page - crucify women, the middle class and the poor?

Former US Servicemen Dishonor the US Navy SEALS and the President

A small group of former special operations and intelligence members with ties to Tea Partied Republicans are dishonoring the US Navy SEAL’s integrity and life-long oath of allegiance to their Commander-in-Chief with a vicious video attacking the President’s representation of the Bin Laden raid. The video, deliberately, “skews the facts particularly when splicing together pieces of the president discussing his role in the operation." (FactCheck.org.)

This small group of former Navy SEALS and their Tea Partied Republican operatives edited the video to make it look like the President took all of the credit for the Osama raid. It is an indisputable fact that the President deserves credit for issuing the orders for the Bin Laden raid. It was a militarily and politically risky decision that could have, easily, jeopardized his legacy as President. However, the former Navy SEAL’s video deliberately failed to highlight the President’s statements crediting the military with special emphasis on the Navy SEALS, the national intelligence agency, counter-terrorism specialists and “the greatness of our country and the American people” (youtube.com video of the President Bin Laden announcement)

The good news is that this small group of former servicemen do not represent all US Navy Seals and other dedicated US military service men and women who served or are serving our nation.

The sad news is that they care more about attacking their Commander-in-Chief than defending their fellow military service men and women who are being denied the right to vote by the elected “friends” of the very same Tea Partied Republican operatives who bankrolled their video!

Ten Reasons Why You GOTTA VOTE!

A recent article at suntimes.com entitled Voting Rights Act anniversary celebrated, yet threats rising, states - "Monday was a sobering anniversary for those of us who care deeply about the health of our democracy. When President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law on August 6, 1965, and when President George W. Bush renewed it in 2006, they were trying to prevent barriers to voting. It is tragic that efforts to bar millions of Americans from casting ballots have instead accelerated in recent years."

Romney: World War III in the Making!

President Obama, recently, issued a plan that would “allow states to seek waivers from current work rules via the Health and Human Services Secretary. Those waivers would give states more control over the means of getting people working.” (usatoday.com) The aim, according to Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, is to “accelerate job placement by moving more Americans from welfare to work” (newser.com)

Here’s Romney’s and his Super Pac advertisers’ functionally illiterate interpretation of the President’s waiver plan - “Under Obama’s plan, you wouldn’t have to work and wouldn’t have to train for a job. They just send you your welfare check”!?!?!?!

By the way, like Obamacare, Romney was for the welfare waiver concept before he was against it when he was Governor of Massachusetts!

Can you imagine Romney as president? We would be in World War III before he took the oath of office. He’d get a letter from a foreign diplomat inviting him to a nuclear disarmament summit, and Romney would interpret it as threat of a nuclear attack!
