The Norquist Effect, not like turkey sleepy time

Remember last year when the unwillingness of a Tea Party-ish Congress to raise the debt ceiling damaged our country's credit rating? And do you recall the same folks calling for austerity cuts to social safety net programs instead of raising taxes on billionaires, to reduce the national deficit? It's all most time for the fiscal cliff joyride again!

The fans of balancing the budget on the backs of the poor children and elderly of America, really dug their heels in on anything that might make the sitting President look like he was helping the economy, at the cost of hurting their fellow Americans, well, they are all just great admirers of Grover Norquist.

Now, Grover's been described as “The dark wizard of the Right's anti-tax cult.” He is very good at his job, which is helping the uber rich keep most of their incomes, and convincing the right people to aid him in that aim. He will tirelessly stay on message on political shows, in his magazine and internet columns, at D.C. insider parties, and in the very halls of our government to accomplish that purpose. Grover Norquist is unsurprisingly, the founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform. More at: Livendepolitics

It's never wrong to tell the truth,

at least in my opinion. The FB veteran thank yous are like the new flag pins. In other words, just messages, and not helpful to veterans.
Love the graphic!

Veteran's Day Reminds America To Act

Crossposted at LiveNudePolitics.com

America is supposed to honor and thank veterans on Veteran's Day. And most folks manage to make a public statement that they support our veterans in some medium or other. But, think about how they are treated in the day to day, the wounded ones, the ones too old to care for themselves, the ones who left parts of their psyche on the battlefield. It's really hard these days to remember those that sacrificed in wars long past, and those men and women who continue to serve our country with honor, when the average person, not in the Armed Forces gives up nothing. Not even inconvenienced in any real way. We are all so caught up in the minutiae of our lives. Heck, it's all you can do to get some people to look up from their smart phones. Congress is no better, failing to pass a jobs bill to benefit the military men and women coming home.

History seems to show again and again, that the warriors get the shaft after the fight is over, does it not? But, we know our young men and women deserve better treatment than being forgotten. So let's not make that mistake, let's keep the pressure on our legislators to do right by our veterans always. Write your congressperson and your senator, let them know that the way veterans are treated will affect how you vote. Proclamations of gratitude and parades are very nice, but opportunities and support is what is needed and owed to veterans, perhaps the same benefits the men returning from World War II is the least our government could do.

This video reminds me of a time when the nation worked toward a common goal, and lived, loved and suffered together. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that same spirit is what is needed today.

My Sandy Aftermath Pics

We spent our Sunday out near Beach 95 in The Rockaways, here in my home borough of Queens, documenting the absolute disaster that the beach and boardwalk we all remember so well became. On my way there, I stopped by the impromptu Rockaway Recovery Group’s donation center to drop off extra warm clothing, shoes and books I hoped the survivors in the area could use. I was really inspired by the spirits of the volunteers and the resiliency of the locals going through this difficult time, living after the devastation that Hurricane Sandy and the storm surge caused. Even veteran stormchasers Scott McPartland and Dave Lewison were sobered and saddened by the damage caused by nature in Broad Channel, Howard Beach and the Rockaways, and these two rode out Hurricane Katrina in Gulfport, Mississippi.
