the horror

Iguala police fired on the students in two incidents, killing six people. Officers then allegedly turned over 43 arrested students to a local drug gang. Murillo Karam said members of the gang confessed to killing the students before burning their bodies and tossing the ashes and bone fragments into a river.

At a meeting of bishops from around the world last month, Burke was the flag-bearer for conservatives opposed to the Church adopting a more welcoming attitude towards homosexuals.

Burke has publicly clashed with the pope several times since the Argentine pontiff's election in 2013 and Vatican sources have said the pope saw Burke's outspokenness as part of the so-called "culture wars" among Catholics that he wants to avoid.

During the synod, Burke assailed German Cardinal Walter Kasper, who had argued that the Church should modify teachings that ban Catholics who have divorced and then remarried in civil services from receiving communion.

reality tv reaches some new level of something

a filmmaker and naturalist, built a custom snake-proof suit so he could be devoured by an anaconda for a Discovery Channel television special. A YouTube promo for the Dec. 7 special — titled, predictably, "Eaten Alive" — shows Rosolie stalking an anaconda, otherwise minding its own business, before it presumably attacks

idea for fighting income inequality

What about a law that requires CEOs who raise their salaries to raise their frontline workers by the same percentage. So when the fat cats raise the salary from 10 million to 30 million, his ten dollar an hour employee's pay gos to 30.

Just a thought.

hello, du

Hope you are all well. I left here in June to focus on some personal issues. I am looking forward to returning to lively but civil discussions. When I left I was very touched by the well wishes of even those I often got crossways with. We worked really hard for the Dems in Texas this year and still lost big. Even with this loss we are marching forward. As Churchill said 'never, never, never give up!'

St. Augustine on Biblical Literalism

Often, a non-Christian knows something about the earth, the heavens, and the other parts of the world, about the motions and orbits of the stars and even their sizes and distances, … and this knowledge he holds with certainty from reason and experience. It is thus offensive and disgraceful for an unbeliever to hear a Christian talk nonsense about such things, claiming that what he is saying is based in Scripture. We should do all we can to avoid such an embarrassing situation, which people see as ignorance in the Christian and laugh to scorn. The shame is not so much that an ignorant person is laughed at, but rather that people outside the faith believe that we hold such opinions, and thus our teachings are rejected as ignorant and unlearned. If they find a Christian mistaken in a subject that they know well and hear him maintaining his foolish opinions as based on our teachings, how are they going to believe these teachings in matters concerning the resurrection of the dead, the hope of eternal life, and the kingdom of heaven, when they think these teachings are filled with fallacies about facts which they have learnt from experience and reason.Reckless and presumptuous expounders of Scripture bring about much harm when they are caught in their mischievous false opinions by those not bound by our sacred texts. And even more so when they then try to defend their rash and obviously untrue statements by quoting a shower of words from Scripture and even recite from memory passages which they think will support their case ‘without understanding either what they are saying or what they assert with such assurance.’ (1 Timothy 1)
