The GOP war on the poor

The way the program to provide the poor with the bare minimum of daily nutrition has been handled is a metaphor for how the far right in the House is systematically trying to take down the federal government. The Tea Party radicals and those who either fear or cultivate them are now subjecting the food-stamp program to the same kind of assault they have unleashed on other settled policies and understandings that have been in place for decades. Breaking all manner of precedents on a series of highly partisan votes, with the Republicans barely prevailing, the House in September slashed the food-stamp program by a whopping $39 billion and imposed harsh new requirements for getting on, or staying on, the program. The point was to deny the benefit to millions.Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-republicans-war-on-the-poor-20131024#ixzz2igNkElaU Follow us: @rollingstone on Twitter | RollingStone on Facebook

a bit of a clusterfuck: when allies spy on each other

Q: Do other countries spy like this on the United States?

A: They do, but most don't have the U.S. technology or financial resources -- $10.8 billion for fiscal 2013, according to a budget document Snowden leaked. The NSA is rivaled only by Britain's code-breaking Government Communications Headquarters or GCHQ, an agency the U.S. works with closely, according to the Snowden documents. U.S. ally Israel is considered one of the top counterintelligence threats. U.S. spies and diplomats who work in Israel expect to have phone calls intercepted, and their intelligence work disrupted. Israeli security services are even suspected of breaking into the homes of the successive CIA station chiefs and tampering with sensitive equipment.___

ok. here is my contribution to words I am tired of hearing

"Boots on the ground" from talking heads on the teevee.

If they are active duty or retired military or part of the military's civilian chain of command, fine. But if they are some pasty think tank mouthpiece. I dont want to hear it.

the most expensive civil war reenactment ever

the confederate flag

is the disgraced banner of a defeated slaveocracy. after the defeat of said slaveocracy it has popped up from time to time (outright Klan rallies aside) among those protesting: desegregation of schools, civil rights legislation, voting rights legislation, and now the simple fact that our first black president won't cave to the demands of the far right when it comes to providing health insurance for Americans of all races who cant afford it or are denied it because they are sick.

We know who they are and it may be saddening to see it still waived by the residents of the fever swamps in the 21st C.

But remember this and rejoice: every group throughout American history that has fought or protested under that disgraced rag has lost. The confederates lost, the segregationists lost, the anti civil righters lost.

This latest group of reactionary haters will lose too. In fact, once that banner is unfurled you can pretty much count on its side to lose.

hanging with the GOP in the hours leading up to the government shut down must have

been like being with the Heaven's Gate people when they were mixing the Phenobarbital into the apple sauce and putting on their matching space suits in preparation for the comet to take them to the "level above human."

the politics of hari kari

http://m.newyorker.com/online/blogs/johncassidy/2013/10/the-gop-and-the-politics-of-harikari.html

For serious politicians like Boehner and Paul Ryan, who want to preserve the G.O.P.’s rapidly diminishing chances of winning the Senate in next year’s midterms (and the White House in 2016), the message of the polling data couldn’t be clearer: whatever attendees at events like the Values Voter Summit and contributors to conservative Web sites such as Red State may think, it’s time for the G.O.P. to stop committing hari-kari. If reversing course means offering to end the shutdown without securing any meaningful changes to Obamacare, in addition to dropping the immediate threat to force a debt default, most of the G.O.P. leaders are now willing to do it in return for a token gesture from President Obama. And if the president publicly humiliates them, as he did on Friday, by rejecting their initial surrender terms and signaling a determination to torment them for a few more days, well, they’ll grimace and accept that, too.
