Katashi_itto's JournalSatanists elegantly humiliate Christians into ending public school proselytization
Hail Satan! Or Satanists, at least, who have done a bang-up job in exposing the bad faith that was behind the choice of a Florida public school system to use school grounds for attempts to recruit kids into the Christian religion.
The Orange County school district was allowing religious groups to distribute Bibles on school grounds, a policy they justified by suggesting that they had not ulterior motive but were just being free and open and all that jazz. So folks decided to test how far they were willing to take it. An atheist group was allowed to distribute pamphlets criticizing religion. (A criticism of the pamphlet itself should be read before fully supporting this move.) And then the Satanists got involved, and that might be the last straw for the Christians who were oh-so-innocently offering a free forum for totally free and non-judgmental discourse about faith that totally wasn't pushing a Christian agenda.
So now theyre looking to reverse the policy:
Worried about facing national ridicule if a Satanic group is allowed to give out coloring books to children, the Orange County School Board moved Thursday toward preventing any outside group from distributing religious materials on campus.
The current policy has allowed groups to distribute Bibles and even atheist materials at district high schools in recent years.
The board discussed the issue during a workshop Thursday. The earliest it could vote to change the policy would be late January or early February, officials said.

The U.S. Navy Just Announced The End Of Big Oil And No One Noticed
Surfs up! The Navy appears to have achieved the Holy Grail of energy independence turning seawater into fuel:
After decades of experiments, U.S. Navy scientists believe they may have solved one of the worlds great challenges: how to turn seawater into fuel.
The new fuel is initially expected to cost around $3 to $6 per gallon, according to the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, which has already flown a model aircraft on it.
Curiously, this doesnt seem to be making much of a splash (no pun intended) on the evening news. Lets repeat this: The United States Navy has figured out how to turn seawater into fuel and it will cost about the same as gasoline.
This technology is in its infancy and its already this cheap? What happens when its refined and perfected? Oil is only getting more expensive as the easy-to-reach deposits are tapped so this truly is, as its being called, a game changer.
I expect the GOP to go ballistic over this and try to legislate it out of existence. Its a threat to their fossil fuel masters because it will cost them trillions in profits. Its also green technology and Republicans will despise it on those grounds alone. They already have a track record of trying to do this. Unfortunately, once this kind of genie is out of the bottle, its very hard to put back in.
There are two other aspects to this story that have not been brought up yet:
1. The process pulls carbon dioxide (the greenhouse gas driving Climate Change) out of the ocean. One of the less well-publicized aspects of Climate Change is that the ocean acts like a sponge for CO2 and its just about reached its safe limit. The ocean is steadily becoming more acidic from all of the increased carbon dioxide. This in turn poisons delicate ecosystems like coral reefs that keep the ocean healthy.

Inevitability is to Third Way Politics as Austerity is to Disaster Capitalism
They are the same scenario: leadership screws up; they are rewarded, while the rank and file are informed they must endure all the hardship and trust the screw-ups to fix things.
When the bankers screwed us all in 2008, the corpo-Dem remedy was to make them whole while imposing austerity on the 99%. In 2014, the abject failure of the corpo-Dem leadership created a political disaster. The proposed remedy from the corpo-Dems/Blue Dogs is for the liberals, who have been right more often than wrong, to stop criticizing, rally around HRC, and move even further to the right.
With no facts at all, liberals are being blamed for the election disaster, blamed for low turnout. With no facts at all, HRC is proclaimed as "inevitable". This is political "shock doctrine". Although it might seem like progressives vs. centrists, its really about the super-rich vs everyone else. The liberal wing, reeling from an avoidable disaster, is told to swallow HRC's corporatist melding of neoliberal economic policies and neoconservative warmongering, with a vague whiff of "the Family"s creepy fundamentalism. Two of the 1%'s favorite ideologies for the price of one - neither of them of any use to the 99%.
HRC in 2016 would be Martha Coakley squared. Trust me. I just voted for Coakley, and Hillary would be deja vu all over again. A proven loser, with high negatives and a minimal connection to the electorate, plus more baggage than a 747 - what could possibly go wrong?

‘Mythbuster’ Adam Savage’s levelheaded response to #GamerGate: ‘Sh*t’s tough for girls’
Shits tough for girls, Savage said. As a man, Im watching this whole GamerGate thing go down, and I dont know.
I wish I understood it better, because I see it and I have friends that suffer from it. I worked with [Mythbuster co-host] Kari Byron for 11 years, and Ive watched the evolution of the terrible shit Karis had to deal with as a public figure and a woman and a science communicator.
The problem I have is that Im a white dude, he continued. And I recognize that my privilege makes it impossible for me to say, There should be more women in science without sounding like Im proclaiming from on high. I take that position seriously. I bring women into the things Im doing because they absolutely are part and parcel of all of the storytelling and the science and the scientific discovery that we do.
And little girls need more role models in critical thinking, he added. But I also recognize that thats not me. I could be a little girls role model, but Im not going to be her ideal role model. She needs a woman to do that. We need to find that balance.

Hey guys enjoy this. Compared to what is coming this will look like good times.
Idiocracy is here. Citizens United is here. Disinvestment in education for thirty years gave us our version of the barbarian class. This will continue until we make Somalia look like a developed country.

About 50 percent voter turnout predicted for La.
By MELINDA DESLATTE
Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Secretary of State Tom Schedler says he expects about half of Louisiana's 2.9 million registered voters to cast ballots for the Nov. 4 election.
That's above turnout in the last midterm congressional election, but still well below the 68 percent of voters who showed up at the polls for the 2012 presidential election.
Schedler is Louisiana's top elections official. He based his projection Monday on turnout in the state's early voting period, which runs through Tuesday. About 30,000 people per day have been casting their ballots early, with the strongest turnout in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
Top of the list of elections is a heated U.S. Senate race between Democratic incumbent Mary Landrieu and Republicans Bill Cassidy and Rob Maness (MAY-ness), along with several hotly-contested congressional races.

Early voter turnout explodes in New Orleans; could be good sign for Mary Landrieu
Here In New Orleans:
New Orleanians have been voting early in droves, according to the Orleans Parish registrar of voters.
About 17,430 city residents have cast ballots during early voting, which ends today, said Sandra Wilson, registrar of voters. That's nearly twice as many early voters as the last midterm election in November 2010, when 9,031 voted early in person, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State's figures.
The primary election in October of that year, which included statewide races and constitutional amendments, saw even fewer early voters at 3,278.
The big early voting turnout this year may be a good sign for Democratic incumbent Mary Landrieu as she fights to keep her Senate seat. African-Americans, who vote overwhelmingly Democrat, have much higher early voting rates than whites, and maximizing voter turnout in New Orleans is seen by many as key to Landrieu's electoral hopes.
