All Politics Aside…

Even though times may be tough, you can give TWICE as much this holiday season without spending a dime and you can lift your spirits and improve your health at the same time. Studies have shown that helping others in need can improve your emotional well-being, relieve stress, strengthen your immune system, decrease the intensity and awareness of physical pain, and produce a rush of euphoria, followed by a longer period of calm called a “helper’s high”.

So, visit a nursing home, a children’s ward in a hospital, a veteran’s hospital, a neighbor in need, a Humane Society. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, a homeless shelter, or a Salvation Army Christmas dinner for the needy. Use coupons for free food items and donate them to charity. Donate that tight outfit that you THINK you’ll be able to fit in next year (or the year after) to a charitable flea market. Give a PRICELESS gift by promising to stop an annoying habit that irritates a loved one, a friend or an enemy. Pick your socks off the floor, or take out the garbage.

In the words of a little known author named John Wesley –

“Continue to
Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can”

Happy Holidays everybody!

What is left to negotiate?

Tea Partied Republican House representatives have pledged to “not raise taxes” on the wealthy. They know good and well that there is absolutely NO WAY to extend middle class family payroll taxes for one year without a SUBSTANTIAL amount of revenues. They don’t want the wealthy to pay their fair share. So, WHERE ELSE IS THE MONEY GOING TO COME FROM - Medicare benefits, Social Security benefits, unemployment benefits, preventive health care programs for women and children, health care reform, heating oil for the elderly, PELL grants for college students, environmental protection programs, K-12 education programs, home mortgage assistance programs?

A two month extension is better than a NO MONTH extension and that’s what WE will end up with the Tea Partied House Republicans’ UNPAID FOR AND LESS THAN HONEST one year extension scam!

It’s Official!

Tea Partied House Republicans REJECTED the Senate’s extension of payroll taxes for middle class families today.

The Tea Partied Republican Peter and Paul Hoax!

All of a sudden, Tea Partied House Representatives want to extend the payroll tax and unemployment benefits for one year. It sounds good on televised sound bites, BUT the reality is…

1. It will, ALSO, extend tax cuts for the wealthy for a year. (President Obama asked Congress to pay for the payroll tax cuts and other emergency measures by boosting the income tax of millionaires.)

2. There is NO twelve month revenue mechanism to pay for it. (The Senate’s two month extension would be offset by an increase in fees that new home buyers with federally-backed mortgages will pay to Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Housing Administration.)

The question is, WHICH ‘Peter’ will Tea Partied House Republicans ROB to pay ‘Paul’ when the coffers run dry in two months?

Now I lay me down to sleep...

I pray for my dignity to keep
If a TEA’D politico blinks before I wake
The shirt off my back, I hope they won’t take!

We will vote for the payroll tax, BUT….

Tea Partied and ‘Grovered” Republican House representatives said they will vote for the payroll tax this evening, but it must be PAID FOR BY THE UNEMPLOYED INSTEAD OF THE WEALTHY (INCLUDING 140 OF THEIR OWN)!

To add insult to injury, they tacked on the following demands to their payroll tax extension hostage scheme:

1. Unemployment benefits will be cut by 40 weeks.

2. The unemployed must take drug tests before receiving benefits. (Your guess is as good as mine as where the money is going to come from to pay for the tests since their FELLOW Tea Partied Republican Governors and state legislators have stripped government program funding in favor of dishing out tax cuts and loopholes for big corporations in their states.)

3. The unemployed must enroll in GED programs before getting benefits. (How is that going to work when their FELLOW Tea Partied Republican Governors and state legislators have stripped their states’ education funds to peanuts?)
