Mike Malloy - Conservatives Rip "The Asshole" To Pieces

Despite assuring evangelicals last week that he would appoint anti-abortion judges and cares deeply about the anti-abortion cause, Donald Trump has so far been silent about the Supreme Court’s major abortion rights ruling on Monday. And conservatives are not happy.

Just minutes after the high court struck down a pair of Texas abortion restrictions, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton praised the ruling and used it to attack Trump, who said earlier this year that women who have abortions should face some sort of “punishment” if the procedure ever becomes illegal.

“This fight isn’t over: The next president has to protect women’s health,” Clinton tweeted. “Women won’t be ‘punished’ for exercising their basic rights.”

Everyone held their breath for Trump’s counter-jab — but instead, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee stayed mum.

Trump’s silence on the ruling is odd, considering his monthslong struggle to assure skeptical anti-abortion activists that he’s on their side. Just last week, Trump accepted the endorsement of Troy Newman, the president of the extremist anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, who has said that the murder of abortion providers is justifiable.

Conservative pundits are now skewering Trump for his silence on the ruling.

Mike Malloy - Bernie Will Have More Leverage if He Endorses Clinton

by Joan Walsh

If you told me before I left on vacation two weeks ago that when I returned Senator Bernie Sanders would have secured huge Democratic platform concessions—a commitment to a $15-an-hour minimum wage, a death-penalty ban, a financial-transaction tax, a modernized version of “Glass-Steagall” banking regulations, a surtax on multimillionaires, Social Security expansion, among other priorities—I’d have expected to see Sanders out campaigning with Clinton this week, having enthusiastically endorsed her.

Instead, Clinton campaigned with progressive icon Elizabeth Warren on Monday, while Sanders continues to say he’ll withhold his support until the Democratic National Committee grants him even more platform wins.

Mike Malloy - Bernie Sanders: Democrats Need to Wake Up - Part 2

Surprise, surprise. Workers in Britain, many of whom have seen a decline in their standard of living while the very rich in their country have become much richer, have turned their backs on the European Union and a globalized economy that is failing them and their children.

And it’s not just the British who are suffering. That increasingly globalized economy, established and maintained by the world’s economic elite, is failing people everywhere. Incredibly, the wealthiest 62 people on this planet own as much wealth as the bottom half of the world’s population — around 3.6 billion people. The top 1 percent now owns more wealth than the whole of the bottom 99 percent. The very, very rich enjoy unimaginable luxury while billions of people endure abject poverty, unemployment, and inadequate health care, education, housing and drinking water.

Could this rejection of the current form of the global economy happen in the United States? You bet it could.

Mike Malloy - Bernie Or Bust?

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday continued to withhold his endorsement for his primary challenger and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, insisting he is still pushing Mrs. Clinton’s camp to incorporate some of his campaign’s progressive ideals into the party’s platform at next month’s convention.

Last week Mr. Sanders said he will vote for Mrs. Clinton in November, but he said Tuesday he made clear that he isn’t yet endorsing her. Voting for the former secretary of state and endorsing her are “not one in the same,” he said Tuesday.

Speaking on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” Mr. Sanders said he isn’t yet satisfied with his party’s platform heading into a general election showdown with Republican Donald Trump, and feels it doesn’t sufficiently address issues related to the middle class, income inequality, climate change and the cost of college.

Mike Malloy - Supreme Court Strikes Down Texas Abortion Law!!!

The Supreme Court struck as unconstitutional part of a restrictive Texas statute that threatened to shutter half of the state’s remaining abortion clinics and deny millions of women the right to a safe abortion.

The ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt represents the most significant victory for abortion rights at the high court since the turn of the century, as states have scrambled to pass and defend similar laws across the country, seeking to chip away at the landmark Roe v. Wade.

That 1973 decision, refined by a conservative compromise in a 1992 case, established that the Constitution protects a woman’s right to end her pregnancy, but later rulings and conservative lobbying have given states leeway to craft abortion laws and regulations targeting not so much the right but those who facilitate it.

Mike Malloy - Bernie Sanders: Here’s What We Want

As we head toward the Democratic National Convention, I often hear the question, “What does Bernie want?” Wrong question. The right question is what the 12 million Americans who voted for a political revolution want.

And the answer is: They want real change in this country, they want it now and they are prepared to take on the political cowardice and powerful special interests which have prevented that change from happening.

They understand that the United States is the richest country in the history of the world, and that new technology and innovation make us wealthier every day. What they don’t understand is why the middle class continues to decline, 47 million of us live in poverty and many Americans are forced to work two or three jobs just to cobble together the income they need to survive.

What do we want?

Mike Malloy - Brexit Texit Nexit...How About Fuckit?

Britain’s startling decision to pull out of the European Union set off a cascade of aftershocks on Friday, costing Prime Minister David Cameron his job, plunging the financial markets into turmoil and leaving the country’s future in doubt.

The decisive win by the “Leave” campaign exposed deep divides: young versus old, urban versus rural, Scotland versus England. The recriminations flew fast, not least at Mr. Cameron, who had made the decision to call the referendum on membership in the bloc to manage a rebellion in his own Conservative Party, only to have it destroy his government and tarnish his legacy.

The result of the so-called Brexit vote presented another stiff challenge to the leaders of the other leading European powers as they confront spreading populist anger. It was seized on by far-right and anti-Brussels parties across Europe, with Marine Le Pen of the National Front in France calling for a “Frexit” referendum and Geert Wilders of the Party for Freedom in the Netherlands calling for a “Nexit.”

Mike Malloy - Armed Good Guys? The Reality Of A Firefight Is A Form Of Madness

Mike reads a powerful letter to the editor in the NYT.

I was seriously wounded in combat as a replacement in the armored infantry in the liberation of France from the Nazis in 1944. I know what it is to be the stranger in a firefight.

Both Donald Trump’s claim that an armed bystander could have stopped the rampage in Orlando and the N.R.A. official Wayne LaPierre’s notion that it takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun are ridiculous. Combat — real combat — bears no resemblance to their Hollywood image of war.

The reality of a firefight is a form of madness: shifting silhouettes, dimly perceived, pop of weapons, freezing fear, trembling hands, most of all the stink: sick, sweet odor of blood mixed with the odor of feces and urine, stale sweat, cordite. Who and where is my enemy?
