July Recipe Challenge* - Summer Squash &/or Zucchini!

Hello!

Welcome to the July Recipe Challenge featuring summer squash and/or zucchini!

Please feel free to post any tips or questions about cooking with these ingredients, as well as adding your summer squash and zucchini recipes here in this thread.

Everyone is welcome to participate.

Recipes can be simple or elaborate, expensive or budget friendly!
As long as they are tasty, we want to see them!

If you don't have time to create a new recipe, or try one from your "need to make this someday!" list, please feel free to post a favorite.

Picture are also most welcome!

*I can't think of a better name than " recipe challenge" so if someone has a good idea for a better name for this let me know and I'll change it!

What's for Dinner? ~ Wednesday May 23rd

Base dough recipe:

Pizza Dough - Thin Crust

Ingredients:
3/4 oz Rapid Rise Yeast
1 1/3 to 1 1/2 c lukewarm water*
3 tab olive oil
5 cups unbleached bread flour (AP is ok too...but I usually use bread flour)
2 teaspoons salt (kosher or sea salt)

Prep:
(I prep in my mixer ~ can be done by hand)
Cream the yeast with apx 4 tbsp of the water
Add remaining water
Stir in the oil
Sift flour and salt together
Combine wet and dry and mix to form a soft dough
Turn onto floured board (or use dough hook in mixer)
Knead 8-10 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic
Place in lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise 1 1/2 hours
Cut into 6 chunks and refrigerate in plastic zip bags.

To use:
Take from fridge
Pat with olive oil and let sit at room temp for about half an hour - then roll out, top, and bake 8-10 minutes in a preheated 500 degree oven.

* I will also occasionally add a bit more water after the flour goes in if I need it. It is NOT a wet dough though. Mountain air does weird things when baking.

Favorite Food Blogs

(I know we are going to do this as a part of our pinned section, but I am making this post so it will be in my journal)

Collecting a few of my favorites all in one place. I started a blog for this, but I never work on it.
If you'd like to add any, please feel free.

Some of these are great food, others are inspiration, or really great food writers.

Discussion: Group projects

There have been some great suggestions lately for projects that I wanted to discuss:

Coyote Bandit & The Empress of All have both brought up Pinned Recipe threads
Housewolf has mentioned a group cookbook effort and DU recipe website.
Irishonly & Housewolf both had great suggestion about retrieving recipes from old DU and adding them manually to our recipe threads.

We still need feedback on the breakdown of the pinned recipes. If anyone has suggestions you can post them here.

I'll ask Housewolf to research the options about her website/cookbook idea and bring them to everyone, and if you are interested in that, please let her know if you have ideas or suggested resources.

If you would like to be part of a group that mines the old DU for earlier recipes and comment threads, please reply here, and we can get that organized when we know who wants to help.

My apologies if I have missed anything else. It's been a crazy few days in my world.

Also, if you have suggestions, this might be a great place to make them, so we can keep track.

Lucinda

PS. the first one in in the mornings could start the water for coffee & tea, and post the dinner thread, if you want!

Discussion: Pinned Threads - Please read and respond :)

I was waiting on Skinner to set us up so I could pin this, but let's just get started and we can pin it after if needed. In the mean time, if you see it falling off the page, please kick it?

I'd like to discuss what type of threads we want pinned at the top of the forum. I see the need for two types of threads. Permanent and Temporary.

Permanent Pinned stuff would possibly include:
1. Our recipe collection (as described below)
2. Favorite Food Blogs and Websites
3. Cooking Tips

Temporary Pinned things would include
1. The Link to C&B at DU2 (for as long as we need it or the posts are still accessible)
2. Special seasonal posts - Like a Christmas Cookie Recipe Collection (which could later be incorporated into the pinned threads in some way) etc
3. Questions posted by either a host or a group member needing a discussion or a vote

I am sure there are more examples but I am just throwing this out there for discussion.

One big task ahead, is to decide how we want to break down the catagories for the PINNED RECIPIES
Can I ask you all to think about how you'd like to see it done and then post your ideas. The rest of us can ask questions, then we can decide as a group on the chosen option.

An example would be ` and in no particular order:
Appetizers & Quick Meals (self explanatory)
The Pantry (staples and canning)
The Bakery (Breads)
Slow Cooking (crockpots - soups - stews)
Meats & Seafood (all meals)
Fruits & Veggie Dishes (both vegetarian and vegan as well as side dishes)
Desserts & Beverages

These are just suggestions, and I welcome any breakdown that you want to discuss. We could easily pull out a Vegetarian and Vegan section on its own merits, i was just trying to save pinning space

I hope to see everyone participate so we can make some choices and move on to collecting yummy recipes to try.

Editing to add another thing I wondered about. We will be getting hide thread back. I wonder if it would be usable on pinned threads? Of so, you could hide all the threads and then just go unhide, if you wanted to look for a recipe. IS that likely? Does anyone program? I'll ask about it tomorrow!

UPDATE: Editing to say that we can hide pinned threads!

Thoughts on the Jury and Jury Blacklist features.

I really wasn't sure how I would feel about the self moderation aspect of the new DU, but I must say I like it a lot.

And, I also think that the Jury blacklist feature brings a nice fairness to the process.
