Rainbow Mountains In China's Danxia Landform Geological Park Are Very, Very Real

Huffington Post - GREEN | July 31, 2013

Yes, we had a hard time believing that this insane mountain formation was actually real, because we haven't fallen down the rabbit hole. But, believe it or not, this technicolor range actually exists.

The mountains are part of the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in China. Layers of different colored sandstone and minerals were pressed together over 24 million years and then buckled up by tectonic plates, according to the Telegraph.

Clandestine operative speaks out for first time about CIA kidnapping and torture during Bush years

Published on Saturday, July 27, 2013
- Jon Queally, staff writer

"It's time to talk about this," says former CIA operative Sabrina De Sousa,
who has been convicted in absentia in Italy of the kidnapping of Egyptian
cleric Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr, known as Abu Omar, in Milan in 2003.

A former CIA operative is speaking out for the first time about a snatch-and-grab operation in the streets of Milan nearly a decade ago that led to the victim's torture and extended imprisonment by saying that high-level Bush officials were systematically shielded from responsibility while lower-level operatives were indicted for the crime.

In a series of interviews with McClatchy's Jonathan Landay, the CIA's Sabrina De Sousa described cables between Italian and Washington officials involved with the kidnapping of cleric Osama Mustapha Hassan Nasr (aka Abu Omar) in 2003 and says that both governments cooperated in “scape-goating a bunch of people . . . while the ones who approved this stupid rendition are all free.”

“It’s always the minions of the federal government who are thrown under the bus by officials who consistently violate international law and sometimes domestic law and who are all immune from prosecution,” De Sousa said. “Their lives are fine. They’re making millions of dollars sitting on (corporate) boards.”

The former CIA operative, she resigned from the agency in 2009, says that the rendition program was approved of at the highest levels but that those officials—including President Bush, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, and CIA Director George Tenet—will never be held accountable.

“I find this coverup so egregious," she said when asked about her decision to speak out now. "That’s why I find it really important to talk about this. Look at the lives ruined, including that of Abu Omar. And I was caught in the crossfire of anger directed at U.S. policy.”

Protect Whistleblowers: Often the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse in government is an existing government employee committed to public integrity and willing to speak out. Such acts of courage and patriotism, which can sometimes save lives and often save taxpayer dollars, should be encouraged rather than stifled. We need to empower federal employees as watchdogs of wrongdoing and partners in performance. Barack Obama will strengthen whistleblower laws to protect federal workers who expose waste, fraud, and abuse of authority in government. Obama will ensure that federal agencies expedite the process for reviewing whistleblower claims and whistleblowers have full access to courts and due process. ~Barack Obama, Change.gov. 2008

Were the Founding Fathers Alcoholics?

Huffington Post
Stanton Peele
Posted: 06/15/10 09:00 AM ET

A recent bestseller has taken up the cudgels of a longstanding political and religious controversy: Were our founding fathers really religious and, more specifically, Christian? On the one side, humanists point out remarkably little specific mention of Christ in the fathers' (including Lincoln's) public utterances. Rather, they refer to an all-inclusive, generic deity. But advocates for Christianity maintain this should not be taken to dispute our founders' deep, underlying faith in God and belief in the divinity of Christ.

Leaving that contentious debate aside, I want to talk about how much the founding fathers drank. The answer: quite a bit. The New York Times on Sunday published an account of how Jefferson (according to writer Ann Mah he was "a lifelong oenophile") spent a lot of his time in France while representing the United States inspecting the vineyards of Burgundy. Was Jefferson a closet drinker? He had no reason to hide his love of wine -- no founding father thought it unusual in this pre-Temperance era to love the fruit of the vine or, for that matter, hard cider, beer, or even whiskey and rum.

Take Jefferson's primary rival, John Adams. According to a descendant of his, "To the end of John Adams' life, a large tankard of hard cider was his morning draught before breakfast." Get the man to the Betty Ford Center! How do we know the founding fathers as a group drank a lot? Well, for one thing, we have records of their imbibing. In 1787, two days before they signed off on the Constitution, the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention partied at a tavern. According to the bill preserved from the evening, they drank 54 bottles of Madeira, 60 bottles of claret, eight of whiskey, 22 of porter, eight of hard cider, 12 of beer and seven bowls of alcoholic punch.

That's more than two bottles of fruit of the vine, plus a few shots and a lot of punch and beer, for every delegate. Clearly, that's humanly impossible. Except, you see, across the country during the Colonial era, the average American consumed many times as much beverage alcohol as contemporary Americans do. Getting drunk - but not losing control - was simply socially accepted.

Institute revises radiation exposure chart without explanation

July 24, 2013

By YURI OIWA/ Staff Writer

A key institute that studies the effects of radiation has revised its chart of doses and related health risks without offering an explanation, triggering confusion and criticism as a result of the disparity among government figures circulating among the public.

The National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) in Chiba posted the chart as a reference that listed exposure from natural radiation and that from radiation leaked by the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant and possible health risks on its website after the nuclear accident unfolded in March 2011.

In April 2012, the NIRS deleted a description saying that there were no increased cancer incidences with a radiation dose of 100 millisieverts or less.

Instead, the new chart said it has been found that the risk of dying from cancer gradually rises in accordance with an increase in radiation doses exceeding 100 millisieverts.

- With multiple melt-throughs on-going, broken fuel cells lying out in the open or partially covered in water in constantly depleted cooling tanks, and ''something'' boiling and emitting steam from somewhere, and the black soot that peppers Tokyo and everything north of it, and the broken reactors themselves constantly inundated with ground water that spews directly through all that poison and then back into the sea -- with a trickle being ''captured'' and put into tanks that will soon require high rise buildings for the only storage space left, is up -- Northern Japan and Southern Russia is slowly being poisoned directly. And so are all the rest of us, eventually.

So secretly raising the radiation numbers are the least of our worries.....
