About Me

I am a fulltime chaperone to an aging pit-bull. She loves pigs-ears purchased from Stewerts Meat Market, long walks anywhere, feeding time and tummy rubs. We both enjoy disc golf, (golf with baskets instead of holes and fancy frisbees instead of golf balls), but for entirely different reasons. Fortunately for all she never acquired a taste for frisbees but she is a sucker for thrown rope-toys and balls. Her goal in life is to see an end to the nuisance that causes some toys to squeak when pressed by her chaperone. After the squeak has been eliminated, the toy is safe to be played with by anyone else because regardless of price it holds no further interest for her. Lastly: that is my real last name! I can get away with calling myself a card carrying chick and often get a chuckle out of folks when I do that.

In case you missed this, Thom Hartmann on 2nd Amendment.

I post this for those here who may have missed this. It is from The Thom Hartmann Show and was posted over in Video and Multimedia by fellow DUer Thom Hartmann.

A little about Thom in case you do not know him. He is a remarkably educated historian, especially regarding our founding fathers. He owns an original set of Thomas Jefferson
Diaries which he found in the attic of a house he once owned. Thom is a prolific publisher with well over a dozen books to his credit, most dealing with America, her history and our democracy. The Thom Hartmann Show is broadcast Monday through Friday, noon to three pacific time.

This is a segment from his show which aired Tuesday. Lastly, I post this for those who wish to read it, not for any other purpose. I am not Thom, I can not add anything to further the discussion
of Thom's words. Sometimes (rarely) he answers our posts to him in his OPs.

Entire OP over at:

"Rewind back to the early days of America - even after the British were beaten back in the Revolutionary War there was still tremendous fear that American was vulnrable to attack. It could be the Spanish coming up from Florida. Or the French - or the British again - coming down through Canada. And most of our Founding Fathers also had an enormous fear of standing armies during times of peace - after all, thousands of years of history showed them that great nations that kept a standing army during times of peace were often taken down by that very army in a military coup. Jefferson wrote exhaustively on this - even threatening to blow up the Constitution since it didn't include protections from standing armies. As Jefferson wrote to James Madison in 1787: "I do not like the omission of a Bill of Rights providing clearly... protection against standing armies." And as Jefferson wrote in 1814: "The Greeks and Romans had no standing armies, yet they defended themselves...Their system was to make every man a soldier and oblige him to repair to the standard of his country whenever that was reared. This made them invincible; and the same remedy will make us so."

And that's why they formulated the Second Amendment, which would provide for a well-armed militia that could be called on should the nation be under attack. Again - the second amendment is there to protect the nation - and, in part, to protect it FROM a standing Army during time of peace. In fact, it was modeled on the Constitution of Pennsylvania, the state where the Framers met, in Philadelphia in 1787, to write our Constitution. Article 13 of the Pennsylvania Constitution, adopted in 1776, says it pretty plainly: "XIII. That the people have a right to bear arms for the defense of themselves and the state; and as standing armies in the time of peace are dangerous to liberty, they ought not to be kept up; And that the military should be kept under strict subordination to, and governed by, the civil power."

But recently - especially since President Obama took office - that rationale has been flipped on its head - and many - particularly on the Right - believe that the Second Amendment is there to protect the people AGAINST the nation. As though militias in South Dakota armed with rifles, handguns, and shotguns could somehow beat back the U.S. government armed with cruise missiles, tanks, and drones. They can't - and this idea that the second amendment is a protection against tyranny from our own government is a lie - a lie that's increasingly used today to paint President Obama as a radical who wants to take away our freedoms."

I strongly recommend reading on as Thom brings things forward to our current Supreme Court where he diagnosis Justice Scalia's recent interpretations.

So now that the Britts have gotten a good look at the mittster....

....they might be justified to quarantine us and send in doctors to see what the hell is in our drinking water!

Ed Shultz update:

Ed Shultz has been off TV and radio awhile now. He just called into his radio show,10:15pst. His voice filled with obvious emotion, he informed us that his wife Wendy, just completed an operation to remove ovarian cancer, that the doctors were optimistic. He plans on spending more time with his wife and he thanked everyone for their good wishes and prayers.

Another tragic shooting death.

Below is yet another sad story about two more innocent victims of gun violence, a child playing with a gun shot and killed another child, her brother. As I post this, this story is less than 48 hrs old. From what I can tell it has yet to make a splash here.

Before clicking the link may I say something to you? The tragic events of Aurora has sparked an 'Uncivil War' here in the DU. I suspect this war has gone on long before I got here and it could go on and on and on...

There is a lot of animosity between the two warring factions, neither has any patience right now, with but the fewest of examples of DUers trying to reach across the neutral zone.

Although the gun issue in our nation is huge, there is a much bigger war going on. That is the war to save our very democracy. Many, myself included feel that we stand a very good chance of losing this war-that if Romney wins and/or we lose even more seats in congress, our democracy will be lost-end of story.

This is the Democratic Underground. I believe we play a part in that war. When we fight against each other, on the scale that has gone on this past week, our effectiveness in fighting the bigger war to save our democracy is diminished.

Imo, if it accomplished nothing our Uncivil War was a distraction-no, worse than a destraction it drove a wedge between us when we need to be fighting together! We are all fellow DUers, here to learn, to educate to do whatever we can to further the fight to save our democracy.

We know this for a fact: Our generation has let down the next generation because they are worse off than we were when we took over. The children coming up will be worse off again if something isn't done. We KNOW what needs doing!

It is your choice fellow DUer, you can read the story of these two child victims and come back here, take aim and fire off another senseless volley at your fellow DUers, or you might consider finding a different way. Just remember, if we lose our democracy to the corporatists, you will never get those changes in the gun laws that could help prevent even more tragedies like Aurora, like this. I want to fight for this little girl-i want to fight for all of America's children. I want us together to fight for their future.

What on Earth is all the hullabaloo over gums?

(cross posted from the lounge)

Gums. Have you noticed that lately everyone is talking about gums? Some people like their gums some people hate their gums.........some people hate gums so much they want to have all gums banned! I know!!! Don't they know that without gums peoples teeth will fall right out of their heads?

Now I (chknltl) like oatmeal, just as much as the next guy.... actually I like my oatmeal with milk and sugar and a little butter and blueberries....not too much butter and you have to drop the blueberries on top making a smiley face before you put on the milk, that is how my grandmother, (grandma chknltl) used to make it... then she would let me add the sugar but she would always stop me after the sixth teaspoon....I guess sugar must have been pretty expensive back in her day.

So I asked myself, "Chknltl, what side of the gums issue do you fall on?" After a lot of thought I decided that I like my gums and wish to continue my decades long relationship with them.

So I wish to announce here in the DU lounge, a place which accepts us unconditionally--- (but not freepers and haters of any creatures we chose as companions) (well except for sea urchins, what kind of a person has a pet sea urchin? I mean you can't teach one to fetch, it just sits there all prickly and stuff waiting for you to reach out and touch it and then WHAMO you get a handful of sea urchin puncture marks which can get an infection that oozes puss and then the neighbor kids will chase you around with baseball bats and a chainsaw thinking that the Zombie Apocalypse has started....no, trust me, (chknltl), you don't want to get a pet sea urchin) --- I want you all to know that chknltl is a supporter of gums rights, I...... am a gumnut.

If anyone should ask me, "So chknltl, which side of the gums issue do you side with?" I will say with no shame, CHKNLTL SUPPORTS THE RIGHT TO CHEWS!

Now I, (chknltl), know that you, (not chknltl) may have a different opinion on gums than I, (c), have. I can accept that. It's a big planet and you can get off of it. If all you anti-gumnuts would please leave, (take your pet sea urchins with you too), there would be less unemployment, world peas and everyone will be much happier.

Thank you. This is chknltl and this is my contribution toward more peas on earth.

Ps.: Please do not confuse us gumnuts with the berries in the photo below which are also gumnuts but without teeth.

Wi. starts burning ballots July 23rd

Important on edit:
Because of an error in interpretation my op is false. There is no real evidence that Wisconsin is about to burn these ballots. Fellow DUer dragonlady discovered the mistake and helped me to understand what happened, (see posts below from dragonlady).
Instead of deleting this whole thread, I chose to leave it up, first because it still is useful to alert DUers as to what is going on in Wisconsin, (except for the ballot burning), and second ....well I did chose to act the part of chicken little. So read on knowing that no evil doers are about to burn any evidence. Thanks and sorry for running around here with my feathers on fire.

(please bear with me, posting and researching via this smart phone severely handicaps my efforts....the link I add below is one I can not even read with this phone. Hopefully it is THE link relevant to this post.)

We were all here bitterly disappointed with the results of the recent election in Wisconsin. So were her citizens. Despite the exit poll data showing a 50/50 split, the returns gave a sizeable win to the Governor, Scott Walker. A group of citizens in Racine county thinking something was amiss asked for and were granted permission to inspect the data for their precinct. They compared the paper ballots to numbers on the tabulators. They found discrepancies....lots of them. Oddly enough, in each case those discrepancies favored the Governor.

The accounting continued, sponsored primarily by Wisconsin Wave. Little by little this story began to leak out to the nation. Brad Friedman and Thom Hartmann have done stories on this topic. There are threads here in the DU and elsewhere (Daily Kos for one example) on this as well.

Imho. This story needed legs. I have no doubt that for the good citizens of Wisconsin, their voice in their government was overridden by those who do not believe in democracy. To what degree were those votes changed? Well it is likely that we shall never know. On Monday, July 23 the powers that be in Wisconsin will be burning the evidence, the paper ballots. This burning is not illegal, they are allowed to do so.

I know this isn't a big story here....Baingaite was the biggest story throughout the week. When first this story came to my attention late last week I wrote about it here and urged our fellow DUers to help Wisconsin Wave however they could. In my view this should have been bigger but alas it never grew legs. For those of you who went to the Wisconsin Wave link and rendered what assistance you could, thank you.

Hey Mitt:

The efforts by Wisconsin Wave starting to leak out to us....

Thom Hartman did a piece that got my attention, other DUers are starting to talk about this. From what I understand, Wisconsin Wave may indeed have the ability to blow that election wide open if given the chance. Imo, If Wisconsin Wave is able to illuminate the election fraud we all suspect happened, the news could become something the MSM is unable to ignore.

I am strongly of the opinion that the biggest threat to our nation's democracy is the ELECTION FRAUD perpetrated by the gop. We here at the DU are well aware of these tactics but the rest of the electorate knows little if anything about this crime.

A single vote deliberately misplaced means so little in the bigger scheme of things but thousands, tens of thousands and nationally millions of votes, deliberately messed with would be an outrage to every single American voter.

Most within the electorate have heard bits or pieces of the gop election fraud, we all watched our televisions as the hanging chads were carefully scrutinized. It is highly likely, for most of the citizenry that is their only exposure to what really went on in Florida. What went on in the rest of that election, and elections after is not something most of our electorate took a careful look at. (courtesy of the mainstream media)

If only the electorate could see what the gop is doing, they would be screaming bloody murder right now and this issue should blow up bigger than baingate with the MSM. Our Democrats in Congress would be hardpressed by the electorate to investigate.....

I believe Wisconsin, specifically WISCONSIN WAVE could be the key to getting the gop election fraud going on nationwide out into the electorate's focus. We DUers can help by pushing this story right now. Talking, online, it is what we do best, bump this story, keep it updated, spread the word. Baingait is out there doing its thing on its own, the big DU can chew and walk at the same time. Let us watch mitt squirm while we pivot our focus: On Wisconsin.

If what I heard on Thom Hartman is accurate, the gop is about to burn those paper ballots from your election Wisconsin, thereby removing the lions share of the evidence to their crime. From what I understand there is still a precious little slice of time for Wisconsin Wave to gain access to those paper ballots.

Those of us who are just figuring out what is going on, must get this story out NOW!

WISCONSIN WAVE NEEDS SUPPORT NOW!
Click the link, learn what our fellow Americans are doing, spread the word, join the fight.

Check out this Will Rogers quote:

"Sure must be a great consolation to the poor people who lost their stock in the late crash to know that it has fallen in the hands of Mr. Rockefeller, who will take care of it and see it has a good home and never be allowed to wander around unprotected again. There is one rule that works in every calamity. Be it pestilence, war, or famine, the rich get richer and poor get poorer. The poor even help arrange it. " (WR.)
