About Me

I am a fulltime chaperone to an aging pit-bull. She loves pigs-ears purchased from Stewerts Meat Market, long walks anywhere, feeding time and tummy rubs. We both enjoy disc golf, (golf with baskets instead of holes and fancy frisbees instead of golf balls), but for entirely different reasons. Fortunately for all she never acquired a taste for frisbees but she is a sucker for thrown rope-toys and balls. Her goal in life is to see an end to the nuisance that causes some toys to squeak when pressed by her chaperone. After the squeak has been eliminated, the toy is safe to be played with by anyone else because regardless of price it holds no further interest for her. Lastly: that is my real last name! I can get away with calling myself a card carrying chick and often get a chuckle out of folks when I do that.

Cannabis. Can We Talk Openly DU?

Slowly slowly slowly prohibition is being repealed. Eventually it will be legal to smoke it, to have it, to grow it and to distribute it. The hows, whys, where-fors and regulations of this topic are still up in the air though. I would like to propose that DU start a new forum "All Things Cannabis"

So why would this topic be worthy of its own forum here at DU?

Economics on both a micro and nationwide scale are in play regarding cannabis products. This topic alone would generate an interesting sub-forum that I predict will see a worthy amount of activity here at DU.

The political struggle for legalization will generate its own interest here.

Growers tips and recipes will generate further threads within the forum.

If the notion of DU members discussing doing illegal things makes this forum a non-starter, may I suggest there are ways around this. The Forum would have topic specific rules: No self incriminating admission of law breaking would be the most important rule. If the DUer lives in a state where growing pot is illegal then that DUer would not be allowed to discuss his or her personal grow operation. Instead that DUer would refer to it as 'a friends' grow op-the 'friend' referred to residing in a state where growing is regulated and legal.

Well there is my pitch for the All Things Cannabis forum, what are your thoughts? Has the time arrived yet, can we, should we do this?

Radioactive Pot?

What effect has radioactive rain from Fukishima had on this year's outdoor marijuana crops from California?

Questions about poverty level friend and ACA

My apologies for the hit and run but I am without easy access to the internets, this being through a friends computer. I will post this then return in a couple of hours to see what help my fellow DUers may have responded with.

My friend is somewhat self employed, he makes less than $9000 a year, he is mid 50s in age, his eyesight is horrible. My question is regarding his need for glasses. Can he qualify for anything that will help him get glasses? My second question is what does he have to pay, (if anything) for participating in the ACA. Sorry for my ignorance and thank you for all who have a response.
(btw: I sincerely miss this place and hope to be back in the fight with ya real soon!)

Thank You to all who responded. In response to an oft asked question we live in Washington State. There is enough material to get me started on the road to getting my friend those much needed glasses for cheap-reasonable price. My apologies for not thanking each of you personally, this is a friends computer and i am only here briefly. Keep fighting the good fight DUers!

dum de dum....... Stalactites vs Stalagmites

They are both spelled similarly with the exception of their 6th and 7th letters. Those letters are very useful in answering the question of which resides where. Stala'ct'ites are on the 'c'eiling or up 't'op. Stala'gm'ites are on the 'g'round as pointy 'm'ounds.

Just wanted to point that out, no particular reason.

Can we make George Takei an honorary DUer

Can DU even do such a thing? If so should we? My thinking is that perhaps DU could do a yearly poll to find a worthy celebrity to fill the position of Honorary DU member. The obvious intent would be in attracting that celebrity to the Big DU but it could also be a means of showering DU homage onto someone deserving it. George Takei would be my first choice but there are tons of others who easily should be so honored. Thoughts?

Did Justice Scalia get it right?

This passage from our bigoted Justice Antonin Scalia in his angry dissent is deliberately singled out by me for purpose of discussion. Let me preface this by clarifying that I celebrate marriage equality today and that I am hard pressed to think of a single area of agreement between myself and Justice Scalia.

Here is the passage from Justice Scalia's dissent:
"That is jaw-dropping. It is an assertion of judicial supremacy over the people's Representatives in Congress and the Executive. It envisions a Supreme Court standing (or rather enthroned) at the apex of government, empowered to decide all constitutional questions, always and everywhere 'primary' in its role."

Did Justice Scalia unintentionally reveal a very real severe problem currently plaguing our very democracy?

Keeping things simple for those of us who are not Constitutional scholars. I learned in high school civics long ago that we had three 'coequal' branches of government. (Executive, Legislative and Judicial). No branch was more powerful than the other.

I further learned that our government was set up that way by our founding fathers deliberately to provide checks and balances on itself and that through the vote of the citizenry we become the final arbiter.

Justice Scalia asserts that the Supreme Court is more powerful than either the Executive or the Legislative branches. Thom Hartmann has been argueing the very same thing for years now.

So big DU, can one branch and only one branch of our government overrule the will of the other two? Can that branch of our government tell We The People how we can or can not act? Did Justice Antonin Scalia unintentionally reveal something about our government that he already knows to be true?

"Six-two and even, over and out"

Ok so many of us remember this phrase from Dick Tracy cartoons which aired back in the 1960s but what does it mean?

I searched around and found a reference to horse racing. It seems odd that the authors of that cartoon would choose horse race booking vernacular as a police code.

Anyone here know something about this old phrase?

Questions about breast lump biopsy

First off I am male, have a dark lump in my chest that needed checked out. After mammogram and ultrasound the doctor needed more so I have had a biopsy. Results will be made available to me on Monday, (2 days from this post). I am seeking info from those here who may know more about the biopsy technique than I do.

My first question is why do they leave a tiny item, a 'marker' I think is what the doctor called it, why did they leave that in me? What purpose does it serve?

My second question is why after such a tiny needle puncture am I so severely bruised? My chest looks like I got hit with something the size of a baseball! Is this overly large bruising normal?

Those are my questions. BTW I am not terribly concerned about cancer although I understand this is very much a possibility. I do not know the doctor who performed this procedure, she being a specialist at my city's breast center, not my doctor, she informed me that the odds of the biopsy showing cancer are very slim.

Hopefully I am not breaking any DU rules here, I am not seeking anything more than general information about the procedure itself.

Ulrich Mack, a prior to this visit unpublished photographer, captured these and many other black and white photographs of President Kennedys famous visit to Berlin Germany. These and a hundred or so more are soon to be published in a book documenting that visit.

Sugar ant problem? Try this: Borax and jelly.

I recently moved to a house with a sugar ant infestation. Every room had those little rascals. My dog's food dish was a favorite meeting place as was my toaster and then there was that trail of ants on the rubber seal of my refrigerator YUCK!!!

So I checked the Internet for a cheap home remedy and found a few sites advocating the use of borax. One such site had tons of witness testimonials which sang the praises of this simple remedy. Figuring that the price was right, (about 10$) I gave it a try.

I found the borax at a local hardware store, the small jar of jelly at Safeway. I found a small lidded plastic (feta cheese) container to mix and store it in and mixed up a batch at about 50/50 strength. I poured a little into a few small jar lids then stored the rest in the fridge. Next I placed those bait filled lids where the ants were partying but not where my dog would get at them. Within 24hrs. the ants had found the bait, they utterly loved the stuff. They took the bait back to their nests. Each day saw fewer and fewer ants in my home.

It is now a week into my experiment and I am happy to report that my ant problem is tremendously reduced . At this point I am confident that the ants are going away. I feel good enough about this simple solution to recommend it here. If you do try this method, be sure to label your ant poison as such before storing it away for future use and don't set your bait out where pets or kids might find it.
