Editorial: Adams' finances don't pass smell test

An investigation by state election officials has concluded that state Rep. Paul Adams violated campaign finance law by accepting contributions from his parents and brother in excess of legal limits.

But rather than own up to that mistake, the Andover Republican has chosen to scuttle behind a smokescreen, suggesting that he has done nothing wrong and stating that the campaign finance law itself is "unnatural, and ultimately corrupting."

According to the report from the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance, state officials after the election of November 2010 and an Eagle-Tribune story on the issue, received an anonymous complaint concerning the source of $50,000 Adams had loaned or contributed to his campaign committee.

OCPF found that Adams in 2010 had received checks from his parents, Steven and Lynette Adams, and his brother, Ammon Adams, totaling $39,000. Of that total, $33,000 came to Adams in late February or early March 2010, just weeks before he formed his campaign committee on March 22, 2010. A final $6,000 came from his parents in August 2010.

When People Ask Why I Have a Problem with Religion... (dial-up warning)

Stephen Colbert Super PAC Runs Pro-Herman Cain Ad (VIDEO)

One of the most interesting, entertaining and even game-changing aspects of this year’s election season will be the activities of Stephen Colbert’s (er, sorry, FEC), Jon Stewart’s Super PAC. The Super PAC was formed to shed light on the ridiculous election laws that enable candidates to raise unlimited money, as long as they don’t technically coordinate with their Super PACs. Not only does that give a clear advantage to the wealthiest candidate, it enables candidates’ hands to remain relatively clean, should they choose, by allowing their Super PACs to fling all the really nasty feces.

Last week, Colbert announced that he is considering a run for “President of the United States of South Carolina,” and ran an ad calling Mitt Romney a serial killer for killing off numerous corporations (who are “people, my friend”) during his stint at Bain Capital.

Today, he released a video asking South Carolina primary voters to vote for Herman Cain, despite the fact that he’s not on the ballot.

“The people of South Carolina are frustrated,” says the announcer, “It’s less than a week before the election and there’s still no candidate for us, plus, the economy… Thankfully,” it goes on, “there is still one name on the ballot that stands for true ‘Americanimity,’ Herman Cain.”

On The Day We Remember A Leader Of Peace, Romney Campaigns With White Supremacist (VIDEO)

On this Martin Luther King Day, we remember a man who let his principles guide him. No matter the consequences, he didn’t waver from the message of peace and equality for all. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the epitome of a leader.

In contrast, Mitt Romney has chosen this day…a day when we reflect and remember King’s message, a day when we measure the progress toward King’s dream…to campaign to society’s lowest common denominator, the anti-MLKs, the most racist of the Republican party.

Romney has chosen this day to campaign with Kris Kobach, the author of Arizona’s and Alabama’s draconian immigration laws and noted white supremacist.

From Think Progress:

Before he became Kansas’ secretary of state, Kobach worked for Immigration Reform Law Institute, the legal branch of Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), which the Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled as a “nativist hate group.” One of FAIR’s main goals is to overturn the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which “ended a decades-long, racist quota system that limited immigration mostly to northern Europeans.” FAIR’s founder John Tanton has said that he wants the U.S. to remain a majority-white nation through limiting the number of non-whites who enter the U.S.

Great Moments In Stupid Chevron PR

Great Moments In Stupid Chevron PR

Now that Chevron has been found guilty — again — for intentionally dumping a massive amount of toxic oil waste in the Ecuadorean Amazon, the company has become particularly desperate to explain why it refuses to take responsibility. But then, Chevron's spokespeople have never been afraid to make absurd excuses for why their company puts profits over people.

We've received thousands of submissions for new excuses Chevron can use, but we're sure there are plenty more where those came from.

So we compiled some of the most ridiculous things Chevron spokespeople have said over the years in this video, to give you a little inspiration. These are truly some of the stupidest moments in Chevron PR.

Jessica Ahlquist Has Won Her Lawsuit!

...

The religious banner that hangs in the auditorium at Rhode Island’s Cranston High School West will soon be coming down.

The official statement from Jessica won’t be out for a little while and the media stories will surely follow. But for now, we can take heart in that Facebook update.

This is what is was all about:

All they really should have done was remove the parts that say, "School Prayer," "Our Heavenly Father," and "Amen," without having to wait to be sued.
