PA State Senator Daylin Leach has been reelected!

New Jersey's email voting suffers major glitches, deadline extended to Friday

Source: NBC News

New Jersey's emergency experiment with email voting hasn't fared well. One election official described it as a "catastrophe" and voters are complaining that computer glitches are blocking their last-minute efforts to obtain electronic ballots. An avalanche of requests for e-mail ballots that overwhelmed county clerks' offices forced the state to extend its e-mail voting deadline to Friday afternoon at 8 p.m., though e-mail ballot requests must still be filed by 5 p.m. Tuesday.

"It has become apparent that County Clerks are receiving applications at a rate that outpages their capacity to process them without an extension," said Lt. Gov. Kim Guadango in her order extending the deadline.

Several election officials say misunderstanding is at the root of the problem: Email ballots are only permitted for residents displaced by Hurricane Sandy, but many who are not displaced are nevertheless deluging the system.

"The numbers are overwhelming. The county clerks are inundated with requests," said Michael Harper, clerk of the Board of Elections for Hudson County, N.J. which includes Hoboken, one of the hardest-hit regions recovering from Sandy. Asked to describe the situation, he said, "I would lean more towards catastrophe."

This could be very bad. If there are a lot of ineligible people trying to vote this way, those people may miss the chance to vote altogether.

I could have predicted that this would run into problems. Who thought that they could possibly throw something like this together so quickly?

So DID Mitt Romney Really "Create Jobs" At Staples?

http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/2012072815/did-romney-really-create-jobs-staples
Did Mitt Romney really "create 100,000 jobs" with Staples? Simple answer: only if no one else was selling office supplies, stationery, etc. before Staples came along. What Staples did was force many competing stationery, office supply and computer stores out of business, probably shifting their employees into lower-wage jobs. Staples was just one more part of the Wal-Martization of our economy in the last few decades. In our system the wealthy few have the power to lay people off or force pay cuts and then pocket the difference for themselves. We have to come to grips with that, and fix the system.
...
As Staples grew it overtook competing chains like Businessland and others. In other words, Staples took business from other, existing stores -- often local retailers. Staples did not “create” jobs, it shifted office-supply jobs from local stores, etc., probably to lower-paying jobs. (The former owners of local businesses certainly were worse off from this.) They likely even lowered overall office-supply, stationery, etc. employment in the larger economy.

Are conservative groups trying to buy popular liberal FaceBook pages?

I'm not sure if this link will work or not. Hopefully it will. It's a screen capture of a message a popular liberal FB page received offering thousands of dollars for the page.

Penn State Removes Joe Paterno Statue

http://gothamist.com/2012/07/22/penn_state_removes_joe_paterno_stat.php
After a wide-reaching child abuse scandal has rocked the university, Penn State finally removed the statue of its beloved and flawed football coach Joe Paterno this morning. The AP reports, "Workers lifted the statue off its base and used a forklift to move it into Beaver Stadium as the 100 to 150 students watching chanted, 'We are Penn State.'"

The university made the decision after an independent investigation from former FBI director Louis Freeh found that Paterno apparently lied about how much he knew about former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky's child abuse. The scandal, which involved countless boys claiming that Sandusky abused and raped them (and Paterno and university officials knew about the allegations but never went to authorities), led to Paterno's retirement and Sandusky's eventual conviction, as well as soul-searching for a school that relies on the football program Paterno built.

Today is the 43rd anniversary of Apollo 11. Remember what we're capable of.

Just to remind everybody of what our country is capable of.
