Bullied Canadian Teen Commits Suicide After Posting Last-Ditch Cry for Help on YouTube

By Neetzan Zimmerman, Oct 11, 2012 6:35 PM

A 15-year-old girl from Metro Vancouver reportedly committed suicide last night, just over a month after posting a YouTube video recounting how bullying forced her to switch schools and drove her to drugs, alcohol, and self-harm.

In the video, Amanda Todd describes on cue cards her experiences with both real-world and online bullying. She says she recalls being severely beaten by classmates and having nude photos of her circulated on the web.

"I'm struggling to stay in this world, because everything just touches me so deeply," Todd says. "I'm not doing this for attention. I'm doing this to be an inspiration and to show that I can be strong."

On Facebook, a page called "Rest in paradise Amanda Michelle Todd" had over 5,500 likes at the time of writing. The Twitter hashtags #RIPAmanda and #RIPAmandaTodd were both trending in Canada. And YouTuber users were asked to repost Todd's video in order to raise awareness and keep her memory alive.

Mother Of Slain SEAL Tells Romney To Stop Talking About Her Son

After telling the story one last time in Ohio, the campaign says it will be removed from the stump speech.

Mother Of Slain SEAL Tells Romney To Stop Talking About Her Son

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — At a town hall here Wednesday, Mitt Romney re-told a story he first revealed earlier this week about meeting one of the Navy SEALs who would later be killed in the attacks on the Benghazi consulate.

It's a compelling story, offering a surprisingly personal link between the candidate and the tragedy in Libya — but it's one the SEAL's mother wants him to stop telling.

Wednesday morning, NBC's Boston affiliate reported that Doherty's mother thought Romney was taking advantage of her son's death.

"I don't trust Romney," Barbara Doherty told WHDH 7. "He shouldn't make my son's death part of his political agenda. It's wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama."

Scott DesJarlais, Pro-Life Republican Congressman And Doctor, Pressured Mistress Patient To Get Abortion

WASHINGTON -- A pro-life, family-values congressman who worked as a doctor before winning election as a Tea Party-backed Republican had an affair with a patient and later pressured her to get an abortion, according to a phone call transcript obtained by The Huffington Post.

The congressman, Rep. Scott DesJarlais of Tennessee, was trying to save his marriage at the time, according to his remarks on the call, made in September of 2000. And, according to three independent sources familiar with the call and the recording, he made the tape himself.

DesJarlais, who was provided a copy of the transcript by HuffPost, did not deny its contents, but in a statement released through his campaign characterized it as just another sordid detail dredged up by the opposition. "Desperate personal attacks do not solve our nation's problems, yet it appears my opponents are choosing to once again engage in the same gutter politics that CBS news called the dirtiest in the nation just 2 years ago."

That race featured charges culled from DesJarlais' divorce from Susan DesJarlais, which was finalized in 2001. The filing included allegations that he held a gun in his own mouth for hours in one instance and that he "dry fired" a gun outside his wife's bedroom in another.

Greenwald: US Supreme Court Finalizes Gift of Immunity to the Telecom Giants

US supreme court finalizes gift of immunity to the telecom giants

Yet again, the Congress, courts, executive branch and the establishment media work together to protect the nation's most powerful actors

Glenn Greenwald
guardian.co.uk, Wed 10 Oct 2012 16.39 BST

So pervasive and reliable is the rule of elite immunity - even in the face of the most egregious crimes - that one finds extreme examples on a weekly basis. Six weeks ago, the Obama justice department forever precluded the possibility of criminal accountability for Bush torturers by refusing to bring charges in the only two remaining torture cases, ones involving the deaths of the detainee-victims by torture.

- snip -

And now, the US supreme court just consecrated one of the most corrupt acts of the US government over the past decade: its vesting of retroactive legal immunity in the nation's telecom giants after they had been caught red-handed violating multiple US eavesdropping laws. Just as the Obama DOJ forever precluded any legal accountability for Bush-era torturers, the supreme court on Tuesday forever precluded any legal accountability for AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and other telecoms for their crucial participation in the illegal Bush NSA warrantless eavesdropping program (the Obama DOJ, needless to say, supported the position of the telecoms).

When the New York Times revealed on 16 December 2005 that the Bush administration was spying on the telephone calls and emails of American citizens without the warrants required by the criminal law, it exposed lawbreaking not only by government officials but also by the nation's largest telecoms. Multiple laws were in place at the time imposing both criminal and civil liability on telecoms for enabling government spying on the communications of their customers without warrants or other legal authority, and that is exactly what these telecoms did. One former AT&T employee, Mark Klein, publicly described how AT&T had even built a separate room with no purpose but to permit the National Security Agency unfettered access to all of its customers' communications.

What was most remarkable about those telecom laws is that - in the wake of the mid-1970s Church Committee investigation finding that the government abused its spying powers to punish and monitor dissidents - those laws were expressly written to prevent telecoms from participating in illegal government spying. They were written with the full participation of telecom lawyers to ensure that the companies' obligations were crystal clear. And most amazingly of all, the laws already contained broad immunity clauses to ensure that telecoms could never be punished for "good faith" violations, but rather only for deliberate, knowing violations of the law.

- snip -

This is all patently misleading. Nobody has ever objected to eavesdropping on "potential terrorists"; nobody objects to the "use (of) electronic surveillance to track potential threats in the name of national security"; and certainly nobody claims there are "privacy violations" from eavesdropping on terrorists.

Walmart U.S. layaway sales strong before holiday season

By Jessica Wohl

Wed Oct 10, 2012 10:59am EDT

(Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) has lined up $400 million in U.S. layaway sales in less than a month, half of the amount shoppers put on hold for all of the 2011 holiday season, as the world's largest retailer makes a concerted push to entice shoppers before the typical start of the holiday season.

Shares of Wal-Mart jumped to an all-time high of $76.38 early on Wednesday and were up 2.7 percent at $76.14 in midmorning as the company held its annual meeting with analysts and investors, which was also broadcast over the Internet.

Walmart U.S. is preparing for a strong holiday season, ordering twice as many tablets and Apple Inc (AAPL.O) iPads as last year, said Duncan Mac Naughton, the chief merchandising and marketing officer at Walmart U.S.

The company has seen roughly $400 million in layaway orders already, after starting the process in mid-September, a month earlier than it did when it brought the service back in 2011. With layaway, shoppers buying certain items can put them on hold and pay for them over time.

Jon Stewart mocks the ‘empty-headed puppets’ who indoctrinate Americans

By Eric W. Dolan
Tuesday, October 9, 2012 0:03 EDT

On his show Monday night, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart mocked conservatives apparent obsession with cutting funding for PBS.

He showed that Fox Business Network host Lou Dobbs had criticized President Barack Obama for advocating an end to $4 billion in subsidies for oil companies, but Dobbs was enthusiastic about cutting only $450 million from the parent company of PBS.

“Why would conservatives feel so strongly that Sesame Street has to go? I’m kind of getting the sense there might be something else going on here,” Stewart remarked, playing clips of Fox News personalities insisted the children’s show was liberal propaganda.

“So Fox News is upset that empty-headed puppets are trying to brainwash and indoctrinate Americans?”
