How to make money in America in the 21st century

After Big Bet, Hedge Fund Pulls the Levers of Power

Staking $1 Billion That Herbalife Will Fail, Then Lobbying to Bring It Down

WASHINGTON — At a Midtown Manhattan steakhouse last June, William A. Ackman, the activist hedge fund manager who had bet a billion dollars on the collapse of the nutritional supplement company Herbalife, offered his latest evidence to a handful of other hedge fund managers about why the company’s stock could soon plummet.

Mr. Ackman told his dinner companions that Representative Linda T. Sánchez, Democrat of California, had sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission the previous day calling for an investigation of the company.

The commission had not yet stamped the letter as received, nor had it been made public. But Mr. Ackman, who had personally lobbied Ms. Sánchez and stood to profit if the company’s stock dropped as a result of the call for an inquiry, already knew what it said, and read from a copy of it that he had on his cellphone.

This comment just rubbed me the wrong way...

"I operate heavy machinery and make that... how does a fry cook get that?" said Carole Holfeld, a 39-year-old forklift operator and single mother from Tacoma, Wash. Making $16 an hour at Mega Brands, where she's worked for seven years, she doesn't think waiters deserve to make more than she does. What if the minimum wage is raised to $15? "Zero tip," she said.

This from a story about opponents to raising the wages.

I would love to respond to that asshole! They handle and prepare your food, that's why! Lame ass excuse for not tipping the server. My guess it they already don't tip.

5 Most Miserable States

The well-being of Americans hasn't improved in the past six years, and it even declined slightly in 2013, according to a recent Gallup study. But while national figures remained flat overall, the ranks of the states with the highest well-being scores changed considerably. Hawaii, 2012's top state, fell to number eight in 2013, and the new top-ranked state didn't crack the Top 10 a year ago.

5 most miserable states:
No. 5: Ohio
No. 4: Alabama
No. 3. Mississippi
No. 2: Kentucky
No. 1: West Virginia

Lovely, I live in Ohio, But what I noticed, with the exception of Ohio, the rest are all southern states.

5 happiest states:
No. 5: Montana
No. 4: Minnesota eh
3: Nebraska
No. 2: South Dakota
1: North Dakota

All rural states, no big city pressures.

Who is to blame for this? - Michelle Obama

Obesity Rate for Young Children Plummets 43% in a Decade

Federal health authorities on Tuesday reported a 43 percent drop in the obesity rate among 2- to 5-year-old children over the past decade, the first broad decline in an epidemic that often leads to lifelong struggles with weight and higher risks for cancer, heart disease and stroke.

The drop emerged from a major federal health survey that experts say is the gold standard for evidence on what Americans weigh. The trend came as a welcome surprise to researchers. New evidence has shown that obesity takes hold young: Children who are overweight or obese at 3 to 5 years old are five times as likely to be overweight or obese as adults.

<snip>

Barry M. Popkin, a researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who has tracked American food purchases in a large data project, said families with children had been buying lower-calorie foods over the past decade, a pattern he said was unrelated to the economic downturn.

He credited those habits, and changes in the federally funded Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, for the decline in obesity among young children. The program, which subsidizes food for low-income women, reduced funding for fruit juices, cheese and eggs and increased it for whole fruits and vegetables.

Another possible explanation is that some combination of state, local and federal policies aimed at reducing obesity is starting to make a difference. Michelle Obama, the first lady, has led a push to change young children’s eating and exercise habits and 10,000 child care centers across the country have signed on. The news announcement from the C.D.C. included a remark from Mrs. Obama: “I am thrilled at the progress we’ve made over the last few years in obesity rates among our youngest Americans.”

A curtain falls in the Airport Security Theater

Federal Air Marshal Service Offices Set to Close in Six Cities

More than a fifth of Federal Air Marshal Service's field offices will be closed over the next two years, government sources told NBC News late Tuesday.

Pittsburgh, Tampa, Cleveland, Phoenix, San Diego and Cincinnati will lose their bases, leaving 20 sites across the country. Air marshals will continue to fly in and out of the cities which are losing field offices.

The cities were chosen because of changing airline priorities and mergers with flight patterns and passengers loads also being taken into consideration.
