Unemployment drop, GOP obstruction, & the problem with bipartisanship

Obama could have said something like this in the debate, but didn't for some reason.

He enacted a stimulus that was half full of the same conservative solutions from the Bush era and the previous three decades of Reaganomics that got us into this mess.

It would have been nice if Obama had governed as a New Deal Democrat instead of a GOP halfacrat. Then we'd see which ideas actually work, and if they didn't Republicans would a legitimate criticism.

As it is, someone could legitimately say we don't know whether it was the Republican or Democratic part that help or hurt.

I'm trying to figure out how this would look to a thoughtful swing voter as well as to Democrats trying to get excited about the election.

leaked docs show anti-Chavez candidate plans to go full neoliberal after election

If you don't know what neoliberalism is, it's the international version of everything that's been done to screw us for the last thirty years.

There's a lot of Chavez bashing here, but in the fight against international bankers and Wall Street, he's on the right side. Why should we want less for other people than for ourselves?

In early September 2012 David De Lima, a former governor of Anzoategui, published a document he said showed secret MUD plans to implement much more neoliberal policy, if elected, than their public statements showed. De Lima said the document was a form of policy pact between some of the candidates in the MUD primary, including Capriles.[33] On 6 September 2012 opposition legislator William Ojeda denounced these plans and the "neoliberal obsessions" of his colleagues in the MUD;[34] he was suspended by his A New Era party the following day.[35] Capriles said that his signature on the document was a forgery,[36] while the MUD's economic advisor said that the MUD had "no hidden agenda", and that its plans included the "institutionalisation" of the government's Bolivarian Missions so that they would no longer be "subject to the whims of government".[37] Nonetheless, several days later four small parties withdrew from the MUD coalition.[38] One small coalition party claimed De Lima had offered them money to withdraw from the MUD;[39] De Lima denied the claim.[40] On 30 September, another opposition politician, Aldo Carmeno from christian-democratic party COPEI, withdrew support to Capriles, criticised Capriles for "false" and "tricking of venezuelan people". Carmeno announced support to Hugo Chávez.[41]

to business people: what do you do with a tax cut when you don't have customers?

Obviously, you have some, but if you can already produce more than the demand, why would a tax cut make you hire someone else?

What else would you do with the money? Invest in some other business whose product isn't in demand?

an easy reply to why economy hasn't improved faster: stimulus was half full of GOP "solutions"

Tax cuts don't create jobs when no one is buying your product.

If you directly create jobs, people have money to buy stuff, which creates demand, which creates jobs.

Do the businesses who now have customers care if their customers got the paycheck their paycheck from the government as long as they are buying?

I don't think so.

What is so damn hard about saying that?

One guy owns the Harlem Globetrotters & Washington Generals...

The sickening feeling I get is since both more or less want to work for the same set of rich guys on Wall Street, those guys might say, "You know what? Now YOU get to be the Washington Generals and MITT gets to be the Harlem Globetrotters," and Obama dutifully obeying.

whatever the "strategery" was, it looked to this progressives like Obama pulled punches

Like once again, Democratic politicians are asking us to bust our ass, give our money, and show up to vote, only to see our candidate not bother to punch an opponent with a glass jaw.

Most frustrating for me was the health care debate when Romney said he and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi pushed it through without a single Republican vote instead of working in a bipartisan way. Obama correctly mentioned that his plan was exactly what Romney did in Massachussetts, and a Republican idea, but failed to mention the Republicans in Congress refused to vote for their own idea. He not only could have made Romney look like a liar, but all the Republicans in Congress look like petulant petty sociopaths. In one sentence, he could have helped every Democrat running for the House and Senate.

And that could have killed whatever advantage Republicans thought they would gain through that strategy of obstruction.

Will you watch the debates live or just highlights online?

The only reason I can think of to watch it live is the same reason people go to NASCAR races: to see a massive wreck.

I think we all know which driver is going to need to be hosed down with the fire extinguishers.

RAVITCH: Michelle Rhee’s Plan to Destroy Public Education--buy conservative Dems

Eventually, Democrats have to get a handle on this shit. The only conversation any Democrat should have with Rhee should be in front of a congressional committee, investigating who is funding her "reform" efforts and what they have gained and stand to gain in the future in return.

Conservative Democrats are desperately trying to keep the GOP viable so they have an excuse to agree with them on money making issues like this.

If they're not careful, when the GOP finishes dying, they will find themselves in the new minority party with actual Democratic voters either leaving them to form a new party or spitting them out of the existing one.

That this education "reform" agenda has any Democratic Party support shows how "bipartisan" and "corrupt" are almost interchangeable.

Michelle Rhee is is a one-person PAC. She is raising hundreds of millions of dollars from rightwing billionaires and foundations and corporations to subsidize her program.

What is her program? Destroy teachers' unions; eliminate tenure and seniority; privatize public education. Having failed to transform the public schools of the District of Columbia, she now wants to privatize public education everywhere.

When I was in Chattanooga, Tennessee, I learned from a Democratic state senator that Rhee had poured $105,000 into a race between a liberal Democrat and a conservative Democrat. The difference between them? The conservative Democrat supports vouchers. My informant said, "Candidates here will jump through hoops for a contribution of $1,000. Getting $105,000 is unimaginable." Rhee bought the election. The voucher-loving Democrat won. He added: Most of Rhee's money goes to conservative Republicans.

Chavez to Obama: I'd vote for you, and you for me

Source: Reuters

"I hope this doesn't harm Obama, but if I was from the United States, I'd vote for Obama," the socialist Chavez said of a man he first reached out to in 2009 but to whom he has since generally been insulting.

Chavez is running for a new six-year term against opposition challenger Henrique Capriles, while Obama seeks re-election in November against Republican candidate Mitt Romney. Venezuela's election is next weekend.

"Obama is a good guy ... I think that if Obama was from Barlovento or some Caracas neighbourhood, he'd vote for Chavez," the president told state TV, referring to a poor coastal town known for the African roots of its population.

***

He called former U.S. President George W. Bush a "drunk" and the "devil." After an initial overture to Obama came to nothing, he said the new president had disappointed progressives the world over and was the "shame" of Africans.

There has been a lot of criticism of Chavez here that frankly should be embarrassing to DU, but this time, I think he made a mistake.

Chavez has gotten so much bad press here (unfairly for the most part) that his endorsement of Obama will get a lot more mileage as a stick the right will use to beat Obama than persuading anyone here to vote for him.

Then again, anything that makes the right apoplectic may make them look more unreasonable and unhinged to swing voters, so what the hell.

Is There a Gene for Motherhood?

Source: ABC News

Now, researchers at Rockefeller University say the inclination that both Rory and Saorise feel at such a young age to nurture and feed their baby dolls and play with items like strollers could be something they were born with, and something that will definitely impact their futures.

In a study with mice, the researchers determined that a single gene exists that could be responsible for motivating mothers to protect, feed and raise their young.

The study's findings mean there could be a valid explanation as to why some women seem born to be maternal figures, while others come across as detached or cold or even completely not interested when it comes to children.

Some are calling the discovery the "mommy gene."

I posted a couple of years ago speculating that the preference to be childless may have a genetic component for some people (of both sexes) much like there's some evidence of a hard-wired component to being gay.

And I got my ass royally chewed.

For some reason, it's acceptable to say your sexual orientation is hard-wired but offensive to say your child-bearing orientation is.

I feel a bit vindicated here.

I'm not going to say whether or not genetics are involved in whether people like country music.
