This invasive plant is swallowing the U.S. Choking ecosystems, releasing carbon from the soil...

In the dictionary next to the definition of "invasive species", they could show a photo of kudzu. Nothing seems to stop it: Above you can see it growing over trees in Atlanta, Georgia. Since it was first introduced to the U.S. at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, it has been swallowing the country from an epicenter in the South-East at the rate of about 50,000 baseball fields per year, occupying an estimated 3,000,000 hectares today. Kudzu can grow up to 60 feet per season, or about one foot per day.

Kudzu is extremely bad for the ecosystems that it invades because it smothers other plants and trees under a blanket of leaves, hogging all the sunlight and keeping other species in its shade. It can also survive in low nitrogen areas and during droughts, allowing it to out-compete native species that don't have those superpowers. The only other plants that can compete with kudzu are other invasive species, so that doesn't really help...

The great kudzu invasion all started out with a mistake: The Soil Erosion Service and Civilian Conservation Corp intentionally planted it to control soil erosion in the state of Pennsylvania. It was then used in the South East to to provide shade to homes, and as an ornamental species.

But as you can see in the map above, the result is more like a fast-growing cancer than anything else. How can you get rid of a plant that covers around a quarter of the country?

Ron Wyden Hits CIA Director John Brennan Over 'Culture Of Misinformation'

The CIA's inspector general has confirmed that in the course of a long-running Senate investigation into the CIA's George W. Bush-era torture program, agency employees "improperly accessed" congressional computers. Brennan apologized to members of the Senate Intelligence Committee for that in July.

But at an intelligence conference Thursday, Brennan appeared to backtrack on that apology. He rejected media "narratives" that the CIA had hacked Senate computers.

"I’m not going to take, you know, the allegations about hacking and monitoring and spying and whatever else, no," said Brennan. His resistance seems to rest on a distinction between "hacking" and "improper access."

That set off Wyden -- a longtime CIA critic -- on Twitter.

David Perdue Holds A Narrow Lead In Georgia Senate Polls

From HuffPo:

Two new polls in Georgia find Republican David Perdue running narrowly ahead of Democrat Michelle Nunn in one of the year's most competitive Senate races.

An Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll conducted by Abt SRBI and released Friday gave Perdue a 4-point edge, with his 45 percent to Nunn's 41 percent, while a SurveyUSA poll for WXIA had Perdue up 3 points, 47 percent to 44 percent. Libertarian Amanda Swafford took 6 percent in the AJC poll and 5 percent in SurveyUSA's.

A third recent survey, conducted by online pollster YouGov for CBS and The New York Times, gave Perdue a wider 6-point lead.

Mark Schulman, the chief research officer at Abt SRBI, told the Journal-Constitution that African-American turnout could be crucial in determining the race. The survey finds just 24 percent of those likely to vote are African-Americans, lower than the 28 percent of the electorate they accounted for in the 2010 midterms. Democrats are making a concerted effort to increase voter registration and turnout in the black community.

My comment: If anyone has a few $ to throw to a candidate, I would consider showing her some love. This is one we can win, and should win.

Well, that's it. I'm going to incorporate, so I can conduct all my affairs based on *my religious

values (whatever those may or may not be). By the way, not that I agree with them, but what about those people in this world who believe in treating their illnesses at home? The Supremes seem to speak with a forked tongue these days.

Anyone got a flag day graphic with a Democratic message on it?

I need to post a few on FB if I can find it. The pubbies are going wild with Flag Day messages with mentions of Fox, Reagan, etc and I'd like to give them an alternative. Thank you for any you throw my way.

Hoping someone can help. All I need to to create a hotkey (or icon) on my iPhone5s...

for a webpage that doesn't have one. I want it to take me directly to Discussionist. I made one for DU, which works great, but that was a long time ago. I can't remember how I did it now, but it was easy peasy. Got my help on that from someone here, so I hope someone can remind me how. Thank you a bunch!

José 'Cheo' Feliciano Dies In A Car Accident

Source: Huffington Post

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rican salsa legend Cheo Feliciano died in a car accident early Thursday, prompting the governor of the U.S. territory to declare three days of mourning.

Feliciano, a member of the Fania All Stars, was one of the most recognized salsa singers, with hits including "Una en un millón," ''Mi promesa," and "Contigo aprendi."

The 78-year-old Feliciano was alone in his Jaguar when he hit a light post before dawn in the northern suburb of Cupey. Police officer Jorge Hernandez Pena, who is overseeing investigation of the crash, said in a phone interview that Feliciano was not wearing his seatbelt.

He said it is unclear what led to the crash, adding that officials did not find any drugs or alcohol in the car.

Couples want equal rights in same-sex suit

The Herald Bulletin

LOUISVILLE — Erin Brock says she’s prepared to fight to have her love legally recognized by the state of Indiana.

Brock and her financé Melissa Love share a home and children in Jeffersonville and are one of four same-sex couples from southern Indiana suing Indiana Gov. Mike Pence in federal court to allow them to legally marry or to have their marriages in other states recognized by Indiana.

“If I had the chance to talk to the governor, I would say, ‘It’s about love,’” Brock said. “‘And, I get that there are politics that go on, but I don’t care. I don’t care about that. I care about the fact that I want to love someone for the rest of my life.”

While Brock and Love have considered a destination wedding for the opportunity to enjoy their nuptials, the women are willing to delay plans and put up a fight for their right to be wed in their hometown in the company of friends and families.

Meet "Democrat" Kesha Rogers: Worse Than Ted Cruz

We’ve pointed out before why Ted Cruz doesn’t deserve your vote or political support. However, there’s someone else running for office - as a Democrat - who could make it onto the ballot...and makes Cruz look like a stand up citizen in comparison.

Her name is Kesha Rogers and she thinks Obama starting a thermonuclear war is a legitimate concern. So she wants to execute him.

Running for the U.S. Senate as a “LaRouche Democrat” Rogers has already been rejected by the Democratic Party. The State Democratic Executive Committee’s released its official party position on Rogers’ candidacy. “The Texas Democratic Party will have no relationship with the campaign of any person identifying him or herself as aligned with the LaRouche Movement or Lyndon LaRouche…”

Now, being rejected by your own party isn’t the greatest thing in the world, but sometimes ideological differences can get in the way. What was this Senate hopeful’s ideological difference? Well, to start there’s the fact that her main focus is the impeachment of President Obama and that she frequently and easily compares him to Adolf Hitler - a genocidal psychopath responsible for the deaths and systematic oppression of millions of people.
