About Me

I've been a female working a "man's job" (mechanical engineer), stay at home Mom (6 kids), working Mom (6 kids to put through college), unemployed, underemployed, temporarily employed and now working from home! We live on an old, small farm with 2 dogs and 2 cats in the house, variable number of chickens out in the yard.

Concussion, anyone?

I was T-boned the 20th of December. I recall everything up to the point at which I pulled out into the intersection. For the life of me, i don't know why I did that- I'm a very cautious driver and usually won't pull out from that intersection if a car is in sight. . So- anyways - I ended up with a concussion and some muscle damage.

The muscle damage is mostly healed, but I am aware more and more of odd results from the concussion.

On two separate visits, the doctor asked me to subtract 7 from 100 and keep going. Easy, right? Except that I got it wrong. I can do it on my own, but not under the pressure of someone asking me to do it.

In conversation and writing, I have trouble recalling certain words and even the names of objects. It's not really obvious to most, just to my family.

If I tilt my head to look up at a cupboard, stand up quickly or roll over in bed, I get the same sensation you got when you spun around as a little kid. Not bad, but enough to keep me off step ladders and to be sure to have a hand on the stair rail.

I've been getting headaches; again, not too bad but then I used to get migraines so my tolerance may be higher than normal.

I wake up every two hours all night, but that is getting better.

The oddest thing I've seen is what happens to my typing. When typing a short, common word like "the", I may substitute another word like "and", or "up" for "of".

So - take care of your brain, it's the only one you got!

Changing times: When John Belusi died, Bob Woodward was widely

condemned for describing his drug use. IIRC, Woodward stated that Belusi was using both heroin and cocaine. At the time, one drug was acceptable, the other was not - don't ask me which was which.

I think the reaction to Philip Hoffman's death shows a better widespread understanding of the nature of serious drug addictions.

I'm old enough to recall going to see Woody Allen's Manhatten

at the movie theater. Back then, you usually only had a general idea of what the film was about going. I recall a lovely opening tribute to NYC followed by an increasingly creepy film about a middle aged man dating a 17 year old. I think that was the last Allen movie i ever saw.

Add this to the list of reasons we need single payer -

After an auto accident, the costs after deductible were paid by my no-fault auto insurance. The auto deductible will get applied against my health insurance deductible as well, if we ever figure out what the no-fault deductible is! I have no idea if all the bills are in six weeks after, but i suspect not because I've only seen one or two partials.

I went for a follow-up to my GP, but there may be problems because the appointment was written as a regular check-up. He changed the chart to focus on the accident, but the clerk told me the auto insurance company may go by the appointment book and refuse payment!

How much did the economy in the greater Atlanta area suffer due to the

total collapse of the transportation system due to the ice storm? How much would it cost for the Greater Atlanta local governments to go out and buy salt trucks, even if they only use them once or twice a year?

Edit: I'd really prefer municipalities everywhere to quit using salt; it's hell on the environment and I think there are good substitutes out there.

Big Pharma is doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing -

charging the highest prices the market will bear, advertising the products that are profit centers, focusing research based on the best way to make more money rather than to alleviate human suffering, lying though its teeth to protect the stock price.

It's how Capitalism works! If we don't like it, then we need to change the way new medicines and vaccines are developed and produced!

Dr. King, Pete Seeger, Dorothy Day - the establishment is

happy to laud these people now that they're gone and can't make any more trouble!

A serious question not meant as a back handed slam: Andrew Cuomo

Here in NYS, Cuomo's name comes up from time to time as a serious potential candidate for President. Now, regardless of what you think of his actual policies and proposals, tell me what you think his chances are in light of the fact that he and his partner are not married:

Regardless of what you think of his living arrangements, is the majority of Americans ready to let his private life be private and judge him on his public life?

Now begins tha annual waiting game - I file my 1040 the day i have all the documents

in hand, but right now I'm waiting for two W-2s and my mortgage interest form.

Where are the conspiracy theories regarding the assassination of Martin Luther King?

It was obvious to me when they found James Earl Ray in London that he'd been hired to murder King, then hung out to dry to stop any further investigation.

In 1968, it was unusual to have a passport. Most airline tickets went through a travel agent. Yet we are told to believe that a two bit car thief got out of prison, just happened to get a hotel room with a line of sight to where King was staying, shot King and then flew to London. Meanwhile. authorities magically identified the shooter and found him.
