OC Deputy Is Accused of Pepper Spraying Teen's Pizza

Source: NBC

An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy is facing jail time after being accused of pepper spraying a teen's pizza without his knowledge during a traffic stop last year, prosecutors said.

Juan Tavera, a six-year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department at the time of the alleged crime, faces one year in jail if convicted of spraying the pizza and ultimately sickening five people who ate it, according to a release by the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Tavera, 30, allegedly pulled over a 19-year-old named as John Doe for a traffic violation on Sept. 8, 2012, when he noticed a pizza in the back seat and pepper sprayed it without the teen noticing, the release stated.

The teen returned home to share the pizza with four friends, and all five people became sick as a result of ingesting the pepper spray-contaminated pie. He became suspicious and notified the sheriff’s department of his interaction with the deputy, the DA's office said.

Nursing home resident dead after confrontation with police

Source: NBC

A 95-year-old resident of an Illinois nursing home died early Saturday, hours after being shocked with a Taser and bean bag rounds in a confrontation with police.

Authorities said John Warna was a resident at Victory Centre of Park Forest, on the 100 block of South Main Street in the south suburb. He was threatening paramedics and staff with a cane and a metal shoehorn when police arrived at the complex, they said.

Police said they struck him with a Taser and bean bag rounds after he threatened officers with a 12-inch butcher knife.

Warna was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he later died.

FFS, if you have to use a taser and bean bag rounds on a 95-year-old with a cane and a shoehorn, you don't need to be in law enforcement.

This is murder, pure and simple. You don't use a taser on a 95-year-old who is so incapacitated he has to live in a nursing home. Any reasonable person would realize that the use of a taser AND bean bags rounds will result in death for someone of that age.

What the fuck is wrong with cops these days?

On edit: Oh but wait! This nonagenarian had a BUTCHER KNIFE! I guess they showed restraint when they didn't pump him full of lead.

The sonofabitching thief is made a national hero and is going to get off......

"he sonofabitching thief is made a national hero and is going to get off on a mistrial, and the New York Times gets a Pulitzer Prize for stealing documents...What is the name of God have we come to?" --President Richard Nixon (Oval Office discussion, May 11, 1973) regarding Daniel Ellsberg's release of the Pentagon Papers to the press.

http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/ellsberg/ellsbergaccount.html

The first trial of Ellsberg and Russo ended in a mistrial in July 1972 when it was disclosed that the government wiretapped a conversation between one of the defendants and his lawyer or consultants.

On April 27, 1973, Judge Byrne turned over to the defense a shocking memo from Watergate prosecutor Earl Silbert to Assistant Attorney General Henry Peterson. The memo said that Silbert had just learned that "Gordon Liddy and Howard Hunt burglarized the offices of a psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg to obtain the psychiatrist's files relating to Ellsberg."

They were attempting to smear him. Ring a bell?

On May 11, Judge Bryne ruled on the defense motion for a dismissal of all charges against the defendants based on the government's gross misconduct.

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Parents of Navy SEAL Killed in Afghan Crash File the First Suit on NSA Spying

Source: The Atlantic Wire

A couple in Philadelphia has filed a class-action lawsuit against the National Security Agency and Verizon, claiming they and their phone records were targeted for surveillance because of their outspoken criticism of Barack Obama and the U.S. military. This is believed to be the first official lawsuit filed against the government and the company, since it was revealed that Verizon had been ordered to turn over phone metadata for all of its customers.

The couple who filed the class-action suit are not just any disgruntled Verizon customers, however. They are Charles and Mary Ann Strange, the parents of a Navy SEAL who was killed along with 37 others, when his helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan in 2011. Several of the families of those lost in the attack have questioned the Defense Department's official story of the incident — one of the deadliest single events of the entire war for American troops — and they specifically blame President Obama's polices for leading to those deaths. Among their many complaints: that Afghan forces working with the Americans may have set them up; that because many of those killed that day were members of the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden, publicizing their role in the earlier mission made them targets for retaliation; and that rules of engagement prevented the helicopter and the men on it from fighting back. They also claim that a Muslim cleric was invited to speak at the funeral, who then insulted the dead servicemen in Arabic, although there's little evidence to support that charge.
